AL.COM - Alabama practice report: Tight end, linebacker return
quote:
By Rainer Sabin | rsabin@al.com ...third spring practice team worked in shells and shorts.
— Sophomore linebacker Ale Kaho was spotted for the first time since the team began practicing earlier this month. On March 8, when asked to explain Kaho’s previous absence, Alabama coach Nick Saban said, “He’s got some issues that he’s dealing with.” Apparently they have been resolved to the point he’s back on the field.
— Tight end Kedrick James was also seen for the first time this month. Saban confirmed that James will be suspended the first four games in 2019 because of an NCAA violation.
— Dylan Moses and Josh McMillon led the inside linebacker drills.
— Alabama defensive back Shyheim Carter continued to wear a black, no-contact jersey. He is recovering from offseason surgery that stemmed from a sports hernia.
— Alabama’s offensive line worked in pairs. Among the notable two-man combos were Alex Leatherwood and Emil Ekiyor, Scott Lashlee and Evan Neal, and Jedrick Wills and Matt Womack.
— The Tide split up its defensive backs during a drill. On one side, cornerback Trevon Diggs worked with safety Jared Mayden. On another, Patrick Surtain and safety Xavier McKinney went through their steps.
— Outside linebacker Terrell Lewis, who missed last season because of a torn anterior cruciate ligament, continues to sport a pretty elaborate knee brace on his right leg.
— ... coach Sal Sunseri’s running commentary. At one point, Sunseri watched a linebacker strike one of the pads and then groused. “That was like no pop,” he said.

Alabama coach Nick Saban addressed the media Wednesday after the team’s third spring practice.
Here is a summary of what he said:
— Saban said he is pleased with what the players have done so far. Saban added that leadership is something that is being emphasized at this stage of the year. He added that exemplary leadership has always been a common theme on the championship teams.
— Saban mentioned that depth at safety is an issue but that position will be reinforced with new players.
— Saban said Najee Harris and Brian Robinson have performed well in the offseason program and that they have the requisite skills to perform well. He added that receiver/defensive back Chardarius Townsend has worked at the running back position.
— Saban said linebacker Dylan Moses may play in different spots based on the defensive package being run.
— Saban said developing offensive line depth is important and part of the emphasis this spring. He also noted that getting the center spot solidified is a goal and noted that Chris Owens is doing well there.
— Saban said defensive back Trevon Diggs has worked at outside cornerback and Star.

I've mentioned at least a couple times that I thought Townsend should get a tryout at playing running back. Now, I hope Golding will realize that Jarez Parks should get some cross-training work at ILB. I think he may be better fit (size, speed, coverage skills) there than at OLB and we need more depth at ILB.

Nick Saban, Alabama emphasizing leadership this spring (BamaOnLine)
quote:
Leadership was a term Alabama head coach Nick Saban used quite a bit during his Wednesday press conference following the Crimson Tide’s third practice of the spring.
That’s not uncommon when a team is reshuffling the deck between seasons, especially when all four of its team captains are no longer on the roster. A fifth of the way through the spring practice schedule, Saban is looking for leaders to step up on the field and around the facility.
“I think leadership is something we’re trying to emphasize,” Saban said. “I think having people on the team and players on the team that can really reinforce the principles and values of the program and the organization really benefits you to develop the kind of team chemistry that you need to have to have a championship team.
"And all the good teams that we’ve had around here, the teams that have won championships, we’ve had the kind of leadership that help people sustain through the tough times, and they demanded that everyone sort of adhere to the standard. It wasn’t just the coaches preaching that.
“So, I think that’s important, and it really makes it special when you have the best players on your team also the guys that are the best leaders. And that’s something that I’m hopeful we’ll be able to have on this year’s team and develop it even further to help us have a chance to be successful.”

Alabama has players like Anfernee Jennings, Shyheim Carter, Raekwon Davis, Terrell Lewis and Miller Forristall back for the 2019 campaign. All five of those players attended the Crimson Tide’s leadership retreat at IMG Academy last offseason with strength coach Scott Cochran.
But Saban and company will need more than a handful of players to lead the team this spring. One player Saban raved over following Wednesday’s practice was junior safety Xavier McKinney.
“Xavier’s done a great job, has had a great offseason,” Saban said. “I think he was one of the best performers each week that we did offseason workouts for four weeks. You couldn’t ask a guy to set a better example. I mean his practice habits have been phenomenal these first three practices. I mean he’s doing everything he can to set a good example and be a leader for other players.”
Earlier in the week when select players were made available for interviews, wide receiver Jerry Jeudy was asked if quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has emerged as a leader on Alabama’s offense.
“Yeah, I feel that,” Jeudy said of Tagovailoa. “Everybody asks him a lot of questions. I see him help the younger guys get better. Younger guys ask him questions -- how do you do this, what’s your read on this? I see a lot of development and leadership in Tua. .. At first, he was just a lead by example type of player. Now he’s been more vocal. He’s just being more vocal and communicating more.”
And finally, the Tide will need a new quarterback of the defense with Mack Wilson entering the 2019 NFL Draft. Junior linebacker Dylan Moses said he is ready to step into the Mike linebacker role.
“I definitely feel like a leader,” Moses said. “There are a lot of guys who watch me, look up to me, and they’re trying to see what I’m doing like in adversity situations when those come into play. I take on the leadership role, the bull by the horns. I just do what I have to do. There’s no pressure.”

Mack Wilson could have been the next in line to be one of the greatest, but he and his handler chose to get caught up in the hype this past year.
Glad this year's team can see what that type of me behavior can cost a team, and more importantly , their money.

Like i respect Mack as a player especially when he wasnt the supposed "leader". I just dont think he has that alpha mentality to be the leader on or off the field. I saw a pic of twitter of him acting like a female and yea its just playful fun i guess but i doubt we.would ever see that out of guys like Rolando or Reuben.

This is what I mean when I refer to misevaluations.
Player evals aren't just evals based on what a recruit does on the field. It's the entire package. Seems like we've been chasing hype over dogs the last 2 or 3 recruiting cycles.

Yep we need some dogs on defense again. Alpha leaders like Rolo, Jon Allen, A-Shaun Robinson and Landon Collins. Guys who lead both by example AND bark on the field and command such respect that their teammates fall in line. It's been a while since we've had some of those guys with alot of dog in them. Need some badly!

Nothing's wrong with Mack. I think Mack was just expected to be something that isn't in his personality type and then he was playing under two new, young DCs on a young defense personnel wise. Some cats in college are followers; some are not. I wish the young man well.
Now with that said we will likely have some growing pains out of the ILB position. I just hope we see steady improvement out of the position week by week.

There's a whole lotta Mack Wilson hate being thrown around this forum, and much of it is misguided.
Did Mack Wilson have a subpar year, all things considered? Sure. Are the rumors of him not really doing the little things the right way likely true, leading to his regression last year? Probably so.
But last year, our Mike LB and signal caller had the weakest DC and position coach we've had under Saban, so much so that said person was relieved of his scheming duties due to being so completely overwhelmed with the job.
Yes, Mack Wilson shoulders some of the responsibility for his lackluster year, but no player on our defense was really ever set up for success last year, particularly when OLB depth disappeared almost immediately, 2nd unit Dline was never developed, and then injuries hit an already down secondary. Has everyone forgotten that we had lost our entire Nickle secondary from the year before?
Simply put, our entire defense was in such disarray last year that we were rarely able to play the complicated, attacking scheme that Bama fans are used to seeing. And that disarray is going to make it very difficult for Mike to shine. Hell, to my eye, it looked like we ended up playing a soft 4-2-5 Nickle for the second half of the season, hoping to just survive to the next play.
And lastly, many here are acting like we went 3-9 last year. We didn't. We went 14-1 and played for the Natty, and if you are going to hate on a player for shortcomings, you also have to credit each and every one of them for the Wins as well, including Mack Wilson. Also don't forget the prior 2 years for Wilson, in which he played about as well as a young LB/Special Teams demon can possibly play.
Mack Wilson played a lot of good football in his 3 years in Tuscaloosa, and made a lot of big plays. I, for one, am not going to forget that.
Way too much tunnel vision and belly-aching in this place.

Mack's biggest issue was playing out of position with subpar coaching. But even with that, he didn't show as much fight as I thought he would have. Probably knew he was going pro and wanted to avoid injury
