Then the only purpose of playing them was to make sure AJ didn't get hurt. Letting him hand off doesn't help prepare him at all.

And throwing a handful of times in a blowout isn't going to prepare him if he's forced into action against a quality team. That comes from getting quality reps in practice day after day, week after week which is something back-ups don't tend to get on any team. 30 passes in blow outs just isn't going to make a difference.

This. I should have expanded on my thoughts.

i am an armchair like the rest of yuse guys. but JP graduated and Greg came in and had a pretty good run. Greg Graduated and now AJ has had a great run. I don't think we arm chairs have the right to question what happens to our back up. NS has the NFL mentality and they very seldom take the starter out even in blow outs. I do get a lil frustrated when our back up gets in late in the 4th when maybe the could have gotten in late in the third.

Bama has been very fortunate with QB injuries. Both of those guys were able to develop over a 2-3 year span before being called on to start. What happens if they would have been forced into action earlier.

With that being said, I will defer to Saban on how to develop the QB, my gripe is the possible injury to the starter while playing during blow outs.

I think it's possible Saban knew he'd never start Sims or Ely, so he didn't care as much to get them reps. I don't mind, I'd rather AJ statpad for a Heisman than let scrubs play just for experience, but this year I see Morris getting plenty of throws.

I agree in that I think that one factor is how much the back-up has demonstrated in practice that he can be trusted the throw the ball. I suspect neither Blake nor Ely ever earned that trust. If AJ had gone down forcing either one to play, we would've leaned heavily on the run game so that's what they got to practice in mop-up duty.

Hopefully the back-up this year (and it could possibly be Sims though I suspect Morris) will earn that trust and will get to throw it more the way AJ did in 2010.

So, just gonna throw this idea out there.

I guess Morris will get around 35 throws in mop up duty, and I think Sims will run a pure option set, just 7 or 8 different plays, maybe not even that many, but if he's effective doing it in mop up duty maybe let him get 1 or 2 snaps early in games and see what he can do, and if it still works then it gives DC's something to keep in the back of their mind.

As for 2014, if DC catches onto the playbook I think it'll start off being DC v CB v AM, but I think by the first game it'll be down to Cornwell vs Bateman, they may split snaps in the opener to decide who gets the job, but I think both can overtake Morris.

I'm a big fan of CB and DC but if I had to put money on it right now, I'd bet on AM being the starter for the opener in '14. He has the talent and by then CNS and Nuss will have programmed him to be the mistake minimizing QB they require

I agree Morris has some talent, but I just don't see him as the guy. It'll be an interesting battle, no matter who wins.

Sheridan is an idiot, but I do feel like if I had one complaint with Saban it'd be that he leaves the starting QB in a little too long sometimes. AJ got dinged up a few times last year when we were up big in the 3rd quarter against teams that we knew had no chance.

It's one thing if you're up 28 against the best college football player ever. It's another thing if you're up by 35 against Missouri's backup QB.

To me, it depends on what AJ is doing. If he's still throwing (like the AU game, who we should never take the foot off the gas against) then I'm fine with leaving him in, he deserves a chance to throw it around a lot.

If he's just handing it off, then yeah no point in him still being in.
