Rumors circulating that there will be a riot in the suburb of Gardendale tonight. That’s very close to where I live.

At what point do conservatives and civil libertarians see Black people's concerns with police overreach as an American civil liberties issue?

I understand the protests and complaints about legitimate discrimination and mistreatment by police officers. As a conservative, I respect that and want those who feel mistreated to be able to say what they want to say. But nothing makes destruction of private businesses and property right. Nothing. It certainly won’t bring support to the righteous cause that has been buried by the rioting and chaos.

The further trouble gets from urban areas the more likely the local population will stand against it in forceful fashion - and that will not be a good thing for anyone.

Praying that does not start to happen.

There are questionable circumstances where there's two sides to the story, then there are instances like George Floyd and Philando Castille where you can watch on video, two men being senselessly killed by a cop wearing a body cam, recording the whole thing. I don't really see how you can condone or excuse such behavior.

In both cases, the officer involved was charged with a crime. The system is working.

I disagree. If the system was working, they would have not used deadly force in a situation that didn't call for it. It's working in the sense that they are being charged with a crime, but that doesn't bring those men back. Those deaths should have never happened. Neither person was an immediate threat to their killer. The system is working when we stop this "shoot first and ask questions later" mentality.

You have the choice to pay attention to the events happening as you please. You can choose to focus on the peaceful protesting, of which there was a lot this weekend. Or you can choose to focus on the property destruction and looting. Or you can choose to focus on both and elevate the peaceful protesters while condemning the knuckleheads.

There were 3 or 4 different protests and marches in Bimirngham this weekend that had few, if any, incidents. The one Saturday afternoon in Birmingham was well attended by people of all ages and races. There were a few hours last night of ugly and despicable behavior. Guess which has gotten more discussion today?

That’s exactly what I tried to do in my post. There are good, honest people out there who want to better the whole community and make things better. That’s why I said that they should be able to say what they want to say. There are also others who take advantage of the situation and cause chaos. It is unfortunate that those who create chaos drown out the voices of those who are trying to do it the right way.

There is a long thread on my NextDoor app in Shelby County with people freaking about these rumors. It started from a screenshot of a Facebook post from the guy that organized the EJ protests a couple of years ago, and he listed pretty much every suburban Birmingham community. Given that they already protested in Hoover yesterday with little incident(I think one person was arrested there), I wouldn't put much stock in the rumors. And even if they venture out to the burbs, my guess is they'll still focus on commercial properties.

The city of Hoover saw a second round of protests Sunday afternoon, with about 300 protesters and a strong police presence. Police said 25 arrests were made.

Of those, 20 were for disorderly conduct; one was for disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and assault; one was for harassment, resisting arrest, and assault; and three were for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, Lt. Keith Czeskleba said.

“One police officer sustained minor injuries. There were no reports of property damage as a result of the protest,” Czeskleba added.

Are you surprised by this?

It's truly tragic that the good work done by peaceful protesters will be drowned out by the few bad actors that have acted criminally.

That's after they arrested 20 the day before, so almost 50 people in two days.

Hoover is not messing around.

I don't. We will never reach perfection and we both know that. But those situations and ones like it are so far from perfect, they are incomprehensible. If you are physically resisting arrest, and you get shot or tazed, that's one thing. If you are lying on the ground and a cop compresses your neck until you die while 3 other cops watch, how do you say the system is working? I don't understand. And it's not an isolated incident. It's a repeating pattern of "isolated incidents" all over.

I think there's a version of that rumor for every suburb of Bham today. Honestly, I'm surprised that hasn't happened at this point but some of these protestors (not the rioters) locally here in Bham are mostly just grifters who want to put on a show.

This may have something to do with their response; regarding Saks at The Summit in Hoover (image seen on and copied from Twitter)

There has apparently been some credibility to the rumors about rioting in Gardendale. Walmart and CVS there have both announced they will be closing early effective tonight.

Stores in Downtown Homewood have been told to move everything inside that could be used as a projectile.
