Pre Saban/McCarron quarterback thread

The current Golden Age of Alabama Football has spoiled us. Three out of four. We want four out of five.
To help maintain our appreciation, let's discuss some of the bad times of our past, specifically bad quarterbacking. Even some of our better pre Saban teams had some pretty forgettable signal callers. In my memory, which only goes back to the late eighties, I can only think of a few QBs that I thought were quality: McCarron, McElroy, Croyle, Barker, with only McCarron being the only one I'd consider coming close to elite.
So here's the place to bitch about the Freddie Kitchens and Spencer Penningtons of the past to help us appreciate what we have now.
To help maintain our appreciation, let's discuss some of the bad times of our past, specifically bad quarterbacking. I was young but I remember Gary Hollingsworth playing well. I'll have to look up his stats to see if he was really that good or if it's just a result of my having been so young that I only recognized the good plays

Hollingsworth is the first QB I remember. I really couldnt tell you if he was any good or not. Need someone older to weigh in on that one.

Hollingsworth success (imho) was largely due to the system Coach Homer Smith had in place. When Coach Smith left to go back to UCLA (I think it was UCLA) Hollingsworth did not appear to play as well the following year. jmo

Only 2 people I know who could 80k+ Bama fans praying at the same time :
Reverend Earnest Aingly and Freddie Kitchens dropping back to pass.
Kitchens had a strong arm but not much touch and Threw what I would call fastballs all the time.
Pennington, well, he had a tough go of it. Bless his heart.

I was watching a game at my buddies house when his dad got up and declared, "Put his fat arse on the line where he might do some damn good." in reference to Kitchens.

Yeah, I think he got a bad concussion at the end of 04' and decided to just play baseball. Didn't matter, it was evident John Parker Wilson was going to backup Brodie in 2005 anyway. I still remember when everyone got excited about Marc Guillon transferring to Bama from Miami and he was a HUGE bust. And, does anyone remember Michael Machen? There was a little hype about him and he never saw the light of day.

One should experience the vocabulary of Kitchens Mom and Dad. They could say words that even a sailor would blush. During a home game I was asked to go talk with them about their language and that wasn't received well by them. But being the good people they are, they toned it down a little....but just a little. lol

I'm not an expert, because I was young when he played, but go back and watch the 93 sugar bowl and tell me Barker was quality. Maybe he improved greatly after that, but my god he looked horrible.

I just watched that game this week and he was pretty bad. Just threw the ball up for grabs, and had two INTs. The defense was simply spectacular, and, of course, Lassic.

He didn't do much early in his career but he ended up winning the Golden Arm Award and finished fifth for the Heisman his senior year.

Was a terrible QB his first year(Title year). Improved tremendously and quickly after that. I honestly thought he was NFL quality from his JR season on. Guess I was wrong about that though.
I don't like to dwell on the negative too much, so some other QBs I liked since the 80;s that OP didn't list.

Loved Jay. Great guy, great leader.
But you're right. I cringed every time he passed the ball.

But you threw Croyle in the mix of "quality" QBs. Maybe I'm the only one, but I hated this guy. Sure he had a strong arm, but its no good when you crow hop and smoke your RB on a little flat route. Not to mention, he was arrogant and a terrible leader.

No doubt about that. Because of that and despite his poor passing, he was a great leader.
One of the things that I loved about him is that he was always rallying the guys when they really needed it. He would get absolutely crushed on a blind side sack, get up, shake it off, and start encouraging the line.
On the far end of the other side of the spectrum, you have Brody. He would see a DE collapsing the pocket and then just cower to his knees to avoid getting hit. Then he'd get up and bitch everybody, the line, the blocking back, and WR's
