is he a DE or a NG
Size wise, NG at the moment. I think he is working at DE though. Might be a waste of athleticism in the middle. Thought might be to use him as an oversized disruptive end. I hope he ends up the next Dareus.
ETA: take that with a grain if salt, seeing as I'm an idiot and just talked out of my arse right there.

well our strong side DE often plays the 3 tech ie Dareus and Jesse I could see Ashawn being a difference maker there.

I'm hoping his long arms would help him disengage blockers at times instead of just eating up blocks.

Robinson will be the best out of him Liner and Allen IMO.
Second coming of Dareus if not better when it's all said and done.

Alabama wore full pads for the first time since Saturday's scrimmage during its second straight mid-afternoon practice. Sprinkles fell and the temperature sat at 87 degrees.
What we saw
-- DL Dakota Ball participated in his first practice since undergoing an appendectomy. He missed two weeks.
-- DL Wilson Love was in a normal jersey. He was in a black, non-contact jersey Tuesday.
-- NG Brandon Ivory (knee) appeared to be doing more than he was Tuesday. This was what Nick Saban promised when he spoke after Tuesday's practice.
-- RB Alvin Kamara (knee) was the only player -- outside the quarterbacks -- in a black, non-contact jersey. He continued to pedal on a stationary bike.
-- WR Amari Cooper (foot) participated in individual drills, but he's not expected to have a full load of work today. Alabama is being understandably cautious with its top receiver.
-- For a second consecutive day, CB Geno Smith wasn't working with Alabama's top defensive backs. He watched as Alabama worked through dime defense drills. Smith was running with the first team before his weekend DUI. Filling in for Smith with the first team was Jarrick Williams. Freshman Maurice Smith was in Williams' usual spot with the second team.
-- If you're looking for the one or two freshman cornerbacks who will contribute this season, Smith and Eddie Jackson are safe bets.
-- Landon Collins is working as Alabama's "Money" player with the first-team dime defense. He's at safety with the second team. Nick Perry appeared to be playing second-team "Money."
-- Jai Miller was shadowing Collins with the second-team dime defense.
-- Trey DePriest was shadowing C.J. Mosley with the first-team dime defense.
-- There weren't any changes from Tuesday with the offensive line. Arie Kouandjio was at left guard and Austin Shepherd was at right tackle.

heard great interview with the BOL guy today and he said Arie is better at run game right now while shep is better at the pass game and that is why the move back to those positions, but he felt like Arie would eventually settle in at RT when he gets better in the passing game. He also said the true frosh who is back up at LT may work his way into snaps at the RT spot.

So Austin is better at pass pro (which is 90 percent technique) while Arie is better at the run game? I say keep Arie there anyway.
Posted on 8/21/13 at 8:27 pm to Libertyabides71
that was the logic until AK gets more experience at pass pro.

Austin isn't going to physically get that much better between now and the end of the season but Arie can get better technique wise with reps at one spot. Long term we are better with him at RT then. Give him a TE buddy or keep Jalston in to chip if necessary. Cyko is going to get the top pass rusher most of the time anyway. And we won't face a top flight one until we get to Atlanta in December anyway. One problem with this coaching staff has always been that sometimes the pursuit of better leaves them to opening too many positions to competition. Instead of having 9 candidates at RT its much better to just have 1 and go with him through the ups and downs.

A'Shawn is the true pass rush threat at DE that can be a full 5 tech DE (3-4 2 gap DE)
He'll be a DE in 3 man then move inside in nickel and dime
Reuben has been getting a lot of PT ahead even of upperclassmen so yes no doubt to me that he will see lots of backup PT not just on ST either

A'Shawn can be the missing piece our D has lacked since Saban got here. A true 2 gap 3-4 guy.
Posted on 8/21/13 at 8:39 pm to Wrenchruh
It's long arms and explosion and speed all in one package
He is gonna be a ridiculous DL in our scheme

yep and as much as Saban loves to sub the prevalence of the No Huddle means playing with your best/most versatile 11 a good chunk of the game. True 2 Gap DE's like A'Shawn and eventually Allen will be the keys to this.
Posted on 8/21/13 at 8:43 pm to Libertyabides71
Right you're talkin 2 gap guys like Haloti Ngata and Justin Smith who both own that position and still get pressure while clogging up blockers
Ray Lewis and Ellerbe in Ngata's case and Pat Willis and NaVarro Bowman in Smith's case

Yeah, I understand questioning recruiting or handling of the field issues.. but practice habits/coaching? Unless you have significant experience I think you should walk away from that discussion.

Liberty abides but the brain does not.

Considering that our offense this year is likely to be heavily reliant on AJ and the wide receivers, it would make sense that they would go with the RT that is better at pass pro.

hmm, i disagree. I think we will be very balanced like usual. I think TJ Yeldon and co. will make up for any run blocking deficiencies, if there are any.
