AG hit all of his kicks good on Saturday. He pulled one by about 2 feet. I see this as being different than the past when he would kick balls that never had a chance.

Agreed. He also got forced out of his routine on his miss. Go back and watch the video (it is already on Youtube). For some reason, Bateman was late coming on the field. AG goes out, sets up, and then looks around to discover no holder. He looks back at the bench and holds his arms open as if saying "WTF, you expect me to drop kick the biatch?" At that point, Bateman runs out and gets in position.

Kickers are fickle about stuff like that. Things seem to go sideways when they get thrown off the routine just a little bit.

I know we are a little short handed at running back, but I would like to see Bo start to transition into a Jalston Fowler role. I'm comfortable enough with the freshmen backs to try this.

You think they are bad now, but if they beat A&M and we beat Arkansas they will be insufferable next week.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — No. 1 Alabama returned to the practice field Monday to begin preparing for No. 16 Arkansas. The Crimson Tide travel to Fayetteville, Ark., on Saturday for a date with the Razorbacks. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET on ESPN.

What we saw

-Wide receiver ArDarius Stewart (knee), who has missed the last two games, led one of the receiver lines. Alabama coach Nick Saban said the team is “hopeful” to have Stewart on Saturday.

-Running back Damien Harris (ankle) led his group through drills. Harris played in spot duty against Kentucky on Saturday. He should be a full go vs. Arkansas.

-Tight end O.J. Howard appeared to be a little limited. Howard stood off to the side and caught passes while the rest of the tight end group went through drills.

-Defensive end Dalvin Tomlinson showed no signs of being limited. Tomlinson briefly left the game this past Saturday but was able to return. Tomlinson said he took an awkward shot to the knee but feels fine now.

He said what? (quote of the day)

“I’m tired of hearing Da’Ron Payne. He scored a 2-inch touchdown. He’s thinking that he ran 100 yards or something. One linebacker has got to get in the end zone. He thinks he’s some kind of world-class athlete when I’m sure that Coach Saban probably could have picked up the fumble and walked, took one step and scored a touchdown.” — Alabama linebacker Shaun Dion Hamilton on defensive lineman Da’Ron Payne always bragging about his touchdown from the Ole Miss game.

Alabama returned to the practice field Tuesday afternoon for its second on-field preparation day of Arkansas week. The Crimson Tide players practiced outdoors and in full pads on a partly-cloudy, 88-degree afternoon.

Here are several observations from the media viewing portion of Alabama’s Tuesday practice in Tuscaloosa:

- Freshman wide receiver Trevon Diggs was not present during the two media viewing periods.

- Outside linebacker Ryan Anderson appeared limited, as he jogged alongside drills Tuesday.

- Placekicker Adam Griffith was spotted in shorts and a T-shirt in the football facility during practice.

- Wideout ArDarius Stewart (knee) led one of three wide receiver lines Tuesday afternoon. He continues to wear a brace on his left knee, but that hasn’t hampered his mobility this week as he hopes to play in Saturday’s game.

- Freshman tight end Miller Forristall practiced with the wide receivers, behind Gehrig Dieter.

- Tight end O.J. Howard was back to doing drills after appearing to be limited Monday afternoon.

- Rashaan Evans, fresh off an injured groin, practiced with the inside linebackers in both periods.

- Damien Harris (ankle) led the running back through individual drills and was moving fine Tuesday.

- Eight defensive linemen worked on drills with Karl Dunbar, while the others served as scout-team players. They were Jonathan Allen, Dalvin Tomlinson, Da'Ron Payne, Da'Shawn Hand, Dakota Ball, Josh Frazier, Raekwon Davis and Johnny Dwight. The Tide could have to use a number of D-linemen this week against a physical offense like Arkansas’.

*** What’s next: Alabama will hold its final open practice of the week Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. CT, and head coach Nick Saban will address the media during a post-practice press conference at approximately 6 p.m.

TUSCALOOSA -- Alabama linebacker Rashaan Evans recorded a season-high five tackles in the Crimson Tide’s 34-6 win over Kentucky this past weekend, and a week of rest allowed the junior linebacker to return to full health.

Evans was limited in practice ahead of Alabama’s Week 4 game against Kent State, and he did not suit up for the home game against the Golden Flashes because of an injury, which he revealed Tuesday during interviews.

“Healthwise, I’m 100 percent now,” Evans said. “The first few weeks I had like a groin injury. I was suffering from that for like a couple weeks there. The Kent State game, I got a chance to have a week off, and now I’m back.”

Evans said the setback was “unexpected” but was something he felt the coaching staff needed to know. Receiving a week to heal his injured groin “was probably one of the best things I could’ve done for the injury,” he said.

Now healthy, Evans will be a full participant in the Tide’s upcoming road game at Arkansas on Saturday, Oct. 8.

“It’s always a good thing to be able to get back on the field with my injury situation,” Evans said of playing against the Wildcats this past Saturday. “I felt pretty good out there, and I expect to play a lot more this upcoming week.”

In four of Alabama’s five regular-season games, Evans is sixth on the team with 14 tackles -- 11 of the being solo stops. He’s also recorded one sack and registered a forced fumble last week that resulted in a defensive touchdown.

Evans has spent time at both outside and inside linebacker this fall on the practice field and in actual games. Where will he line up this weekend in Fayetteville, Ark.? Even the former five-star prospect doesn’t know that just yet.

“I really don’t know, to be honest with you,” Evans said. “It’s whatever coach wants to put me at. Whether it’s rushing off the edge or playing middle, I’m just here to play my role, and whatever that is, I’m gonna do it.”

TUSCALOOSA -- Alabama leads the SEC and is ranked sixth nationally in averaging 19.67 punt return yards per game. The No. 1-ranked Crimson Tide is also tied for the national lead with two punt returns for touchdowns in 2016.

But head coach Nick Saban has seen potential returns bounce by the Alabama return men this season, and that’s something he and whichever player is back deep to receive the punt will look to improve ahead of the Arkansas game.

“The thing that we have to do a better job of is we have to get the ball fielded all the time,” Saban said Monday during a noon press conference. “There’s been too many balls that are fieldable that cost you too much field position. Regardless of who’s back there I think we need to do a better job of that.”

On two separate occasions this past weekend against Kentucky, senior safety Eddie Jackson, who returned the first punt he fielded this year for an 85-yard touchdown at Ole Miss, allowed the ball to hit the turf inside Bryant-Denny Stadium instead of fielding it. Jackson stepped out of the way of one Grant McKinniss kick, and it rolled more than 10 yards for a 61-yard punt.

“This past weekend, I misjudged the ball a couple of times,” Jackson said Tuesday afternoon. “But I just gotta be more aggressive attacking the ball and just giving us good field position if I can’t return it, fair catch it, and not let the ball bounce behind me. Those are one of the things (Saban) kept talking about.”

Before that, the senior safety watched another punt bounce off the field before scooping it up and returning it 17 yards. But Jackson admitted Tuesday that if he had caught it instead, the play would have resulted in more yards.

“I actually think if I attacked the ball it would have been a touchdown or a bigger return,” he said. “It just bounced, I just saw the cut, cut left, and then I see some of my teammates. I thought Hootie (Jones) was going to make the block, but a guy was turned, his back was facing, so he didn’t want to clip him. So I tried to cut back and just tried to make something happen.”

There’s no denying Jackson’s talent, and almost instinct, to maneuver through defenders when the ball is in his hands, whether that is on a punt or interception return. Wideout Calvin Ridley called his teammate a natural athlete.

“He’s like a receiver,” Ridley said. “He really played receiver in high school, but he’s really good when he gets the ball.”

Saban agreed with his wide receiver. He just wants to see the ball in his players’ hands instead of on the turf. Especially since Arkansas is ranked 13th in the league in opponent punt return yards, surrendering 9.83 yards per game.

“Eddie’s always shown great judgment, you know, to get that part of it done,” Saban said. “But the No. 1 thing on punt return is possession of the ball. If you can make a first down with the return that’s great, change field position, we want to make explosive plays on special teams. But we also don’t want to give up field position because we’re not making good judgments and decisions about fielding the ball.”

Alabama returned to the practice field Wednesday afternoon for its third on-field preparation day of Arkansas week. The Crimson Tide players practiced outdoors and in full pads on a sunny, 90-degree afternoon.

Here are several observations from the media viewing portion of Alabama’s Wednesday practice in Tuscaloosa:

- Freshman wide receiver Trevon Diggs was back on the practice field after missing Tuesday’s session. Diggs ran routes and caught passes with the wideouts and worth a brace on his left knee.

- Outside linebacker Ryan Anderson was doing more after appearing limited the previous day.

- For a second straight day, placekicker Adam Griffith was spotted in shorts and a T-shirt in the football facility during practice. That’s not necessarily a bad thing as the specialists have their own routines.

- Wide receiver ArDarius Stewart (knee) looked fine as he ran routes with a brace on his left knee.

- Running back Damien Harris (ankle) was the first running back through drills and running behind the first-team offensive line during team drills. Joshua Jacobs and Bo Scarbrough were the next two tailbacks in line.

- Wide receiver Raheem Falkins appeared limited as he watched his teammates during the two viewing periods.

- Both Alphonse Taylor and Lester Cotton saw reps at right guard with the first-team offensive line.

- Several offensive players sported scout-team jerseys, representing Arkansas players. They were:

Derrick Gore -- RB Rawleigh Williams III (5-10, 223)
Ronnie Clark -- RB Devwah Whaley (5-11, 216)
Cam Stewart -- TE Jeremy Sprinkle (6-6, 256)

- Tackles and tight ends coach Mario Cristobal got after freshman tight end Irvin Smith during blocking drills, making the first-year player repeat a drill several times. Smith wore a No. 17 jersey, representing Kofi Boateng.

- An NFL scout from the Miami Dolphins watched Wednesday’s practice from the sideline.

TUSCALOOSA -- With the departure of backup quarterback Blake Barnett, Alabama is down to three scholarship signal callers -- and only two behind true freshman starter Jalen Hurts. But that isn’t a concern for head coach Nick Saban.

When asked if he thought about reducing the number of designed runs for the Crimson Tide’s dual-threat quarterback now that Barnett has left the program, Saban gave a multi-part answer in his Wednesday post-practice news conference.

“We have confidence in Cooper Bateman,” Saban said. “He’s been a backup quarterback for us in the past and has some experience and has a similar skill set. We certainly don’t want to do anything that would get our quarterback injured in any way, shape or form. But I think his skill set is what it is and we have to use the things that he can do effectively in our offense.

“We continue to try to make improvements in the passing game. I think one of Jalen’s great assets as a player is that he can make plays with his feet, and I don’t think we can totally inhibit him from doing that. I guess if he gets injured doing it, then it’ll be my fault. I guess if he gets injured by sitting in the pocket throwing a pass, then it's OK.

“It’s football. I don’t worry about guys getting hurt. We’re going to do what we have to do to try to give ourselves the best chance to be successful and give him the best chance to be successful.”

Hurts leads Alabama with 54 carries through five weeks and is the SEC’s third-leading rusher at his position in terms of rushing yards with 276, trailing only Texas A&M’s Trevor Knight (392) and Mississippi State’s Nick Fitzgerald (329).

The Channelview, Texas product has also thrown for 989 yards, seven touchdowns and one interception on 84-of-135 passing. His downfield shots and chemistry with his wide receivers are things the young quarterback needs to -- and is trying to -- improve as the meat of the Tide’s SEC schedule approaches. But limiting what he can do offensively is not the plan for Saban.

While the entire offense may still be limited around him, Saban and offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin continue to increase the plays at Hurts’ disposal each week, broadening the playbook for the former four-star, dual-threat quarterback.

“First of all, we’re trying to execute and not do more than what Jalen is capable of doing,” Saban said. “I think it’s important that we get a lot of repetitions and we decide early in the week what we’re going to do offensively so we can go practice it. I think that’s true for all players. I think when you have a young quarterback that’s especially important. What we’re talking about, basically, is you have a play call, you have a pattern that develops, and the guy has to read, sometimes whether the middle of the field open, whether the middle of the field is closed, as to which side he’s going to throw the ball to. So that’s one of the things that we think about.

“Other times you’re just trying to limit the side of the field he’s going to throw the ball to, he’s reading some kind of a high-low, which is a little bit easier for him to do. He’s a very bright guy, I think he gets it. He just needs turns so that he can get the kind of experience to feel comfortable and confident in doing this, sort of that same old over and over and over and over thing. Everyone thinks that you practice something to get it right. You really practice it until you can’t get it wrong. There’s a difference in that.”

FRAZIER'S PROGRESS; DEPTH ALONG D-LINE

Alabama hasn’t faced a traditional, run-heavy offense like the one Arkansas will field Saturday in Fayetteville.

This will be the first test for a Crimson Tide defensive line, which lost a lot of beef this offseason. Jarran Reed and A'Shawn Robinson are now on NFL rosters, and big Darren Lake isn’t walking through that door at nose guard.

So Alabama will have to rely on some younger guys to provide that depth behind Jonathan Allen, Dalvin Tomlinson and Da'Ron Payne, and one of those players, Josh Frazier, is poised to step into that role in his home state.

“Josh has done a good job of playing nose guard,” Saban said. “We haven’t played a lot of regular people where the nose guard plays a lot but he has played some in nickel and improved. Worked hard and got his weight down and moves a little better, the pass rush is a little better. I think in a game like this, he’s going to get a lot of opportunity to be in there. This is his kind of game. He’s done a really good job.”

Eight defensive linemen practiced with coach Karl Dunbar this week, while the others served as scout-team players. They were Allen, Tomlinson, Payne, Da'Shawn Hand, Dakota Ball, Frazier, Raekwon Davis and Johnny Dwight.

Those will be the eight players we likely see rotating in and out of the lineup against the Hogs’ ground attack.

“Johnny Dwight, we’re trying to work with and develop him,” Saban said. “Raekwon is still developing. I think Dakota Ball has done a good job all year long. We just have to keep working with these guys so that they can be more consistent in how they play, technique-wise as well as understanding assignments and being able to execute them on a consistent basis.”
