Boz,
I'd like to interrupt the current discussion to say that your posts on both the QB battle and other issues have been the best written, most accurate, most even handed, and most informative of any that I've read from any other source. It's pretty much gotten to the point I don't put stock into any report until I hop over here and see what Boz has to say about the topic.
So, for that, this Bama fan 3 hours away from Tuscaloosa says thank you.
Now, back to the issue of transfers and attrition, quite a few people including many Bama fans are acting like this year is something odd. Al.com has a list of those that have left the program since 2010 broken out by recruiting class. There have been 26, which is an average of over 5 per class with the high being 8 from the 2011 group and the low being none from 2014's class yet. So calm your fears, other than Maurice Smith's public spectacle, the roster situation is just business as usual.

The truth is most of the 7 who have left had no chance of cracking the two-deep any time soon. Some of them are very good players, that's just where our roster is at this point. Guys like Bell, Charlot, Shawn BB and even Sheffield were not going to play significant minutes this year or maybe next year outside of ST's. Some guys don't mind waiting their turn...guys like Bozeman, Robert Forster and others.
But some of these young kids think if they aren't starters and All-Americans by their second year on campus something is wrong, and it can't be their fault.
I think you may see Saban specifically start looking for guys who aren't afraid of competition and who won't take their ball and go home if they don't start their first or second year here. Some of these kids have been coddled their whole life and don't know how to handle disappointment or persevere. Funny thing is, most of these types that have left over the years have done virtually nothing to help themselves. Star Jackson, Jimmy Barns, Nick Fannuzi, Tenpenny and many others. Truth is if they aren't NFL caliber players on our practice field, they aren't magically going to become NFL caliber on some other field.

I do appropriate you saying that. I just like to get good info out to people who actually follow the team. So many times there are crap reports out. I do my best.

I'm pretty sure they look for that already. Pretty much every recruit says they are not promised anything other than the chance to bompete for a spot.
The problem is that every 5 star says he isn't afraid of competition because for virtually all of them, they haven't faced real competition in their entire athletic career.
The challenge is trying to identify those that will man up instead of pack up and that is a really hard thing to do.

That fricking fumble on the opening kickoff in the Ole Miss game sure as shite didn't help.

I honestly think Sheff doesn't leave if the Mo Smith thing didn't go down the way it did. Both being from Houston and all.

The growing buzz surrounding Alabama true freshman quarterback Jalen Hurts has made its way to Mobile, home of private quarterback coach David Morris, whose client list at QB Country includes former Alabama quarterbacks A.J. McCarron and Jake Coker and 2016 first-round pick Paxton Lynch.
Apparently, Morris has heard enough about Hurts through the quarterback grapevine to think a true freshman lining up behind center for the Crimson Tide this fall isn't out of the question.
"I think some guys can do and I think he may be one of them," Morris said. "I don't know that kid personally, but everything I've heard is it almost sounds like you're talking about Russell Wilson right now. There are guys out there that are just ball players and they can do it."
While it hasn't been a route taken by Nick Saban in the past, Morris is of the opinion that breaking in a rookie at UA may not be as difficult than at some other places.
"I think at Alabama it may even be easier than others because there is so much talent [around the quarterback]," Morris said. "I think it would be off the charts, but everything I've heard is that kid is off the charts."
If anyone would know about starting as a true freshman in the SEC it would be Morris. He not only had his number called as a first-year player at Ole Miss in 1998, he did it as a walk-on.
"The learning curve is hard, but for me it took a break," Morris said. "I was a second-stringer and the starter at the time, Romaro Miller, got hurt. I think to go in and win [the job outright], especially at a place like [Alabama] would be amazing. But I think there are guys who can handle it."
As for the evaluation process Alabama quarterbacks go through under Saban, in working with Coker, Morris got a glimpse at what is involved in selecting at starter at UA.
"I spoke to [Coker] almost everyday in August [2015], and it was kind of like, 'I think I'm the guy but they're not really putting on much'," Morris recalled. "Then game week he found out he was going to start against Wisconsin. As far as when it clicked for him, I think it clicked early, even against Wisconsin, when he played really well. I think when he really felt like it was his team was after Ole Miss. That second half, when he played at a level when you finally saw that this guy has some special stuff."
"I think he always believed it, but Nick kind of puts his quarterbacks in a situation where you have to prove it everyday. And I think that kind of breeds a winner."
According to Morris, the trick to winning a competition like the one that is taking place at UA for a third straight year is to focus on what is being asked of the quarterback instead of going above and beyond the call of duty in an effort to impress coaches and teammates.
"The play is designed so you can make a play, so just do what the play asks you to do," Morris said. "I think even Jake would tell you that from last year. Early on in the competition, he felt like he had to press when, really, the play is designed a certain way and if you just do your job you're going to impress."
Saturday's scrimmage at Bryant-Denny Stadium will serve as the next mile marker on the road to naming a starting quarterback. For Hurts, Cooper Bateman and Blake Barnett, the pressure-packed practice will offer one final chance for the trio to state their cases in a game-like setting.
"Those scrimmages are so big," Morris said. "I've been through it and in the midst of the competition you feel the importance of them. It's also a what-have-you-done-for-me-lately position, especially when you're in a tight competition."

For fun
Asked which two of three quarterbacks — Cooper Bateman, Blake Barnett and Jalen Hurts — would be in the rotation, Herbstreit went with the more mobile and athletic options.
"Blake and Hurts is my guess," Herbstreit tweeted. "Or maybe Bateman and Hurts if Blake continues to make mistakes."
Barnett has struggled with consistency at times during fall camp, but Lane Kiffin has raved about the strides he has made and development since spring ball.
Kirk Herbstreit ? @KirkHerbstreit
Wouldn't be surprised to see 2 QBs early in the year until someone establishes himself. LINK …

Indeed. I'd add that Saban and the staff expect them to be all around good players and teammates. It's not just about being talented and being good at your position. It's going to class, coming to practice and giving 110%, not missing workouts, being a good teammmate, etc. As you said, some players have never been in an environment with that many expectations and it takes a year or two to adjust. Some thrive in it and see the field a lot their freshmen year. Sometimes out of necessity due to lack of depth, sometimes because they're too good and work too hard to keep them off the field.

I have yet to see anyone give Boz a hard time and everyone seems to enjoy what he posts. Great info so far.

I think whoever starts, our offense will have more of a running QB feel to it. Sort of like when Sims was our QB....there were tons of times when he ran the ball when there was nothing there, or he bought time to throw it down the field. All three of our guys can do that better than Coker did. That said, Hurts can do it best...so the question is, can he master the offense and protect the ball enough so that his youth does't outweigh his talent.

I won't, it has happened before on other sites. People sometimes believe you make things up or put to much opinion. I try not to put my opinions unless asked. Back when I told people Blake was the starter well before it was announced they called blasphemy and went crazy. In the end they made up but it's annoying trying to deal with that.

can you share insight on the latest DB. Why and is he truly leaving? I will hang up and listen to your response.

Well, he's already gone. We assume it's playing time. Could be more to it though.

have not seen official word from Bama, but obviously he is gone unless he makes a 11th hour change.
