I have heard it said that Coker was sick the day of the game. Maybe this had a little to do with who started?

No, he gave them both a shot and let them pick for themselves.

He didnt make a mistake. It was based on sound analysis from what Ole Miss brought, a fast over aggressive defense, and what Bateman showed in practice, the ability to pull the read option and run it outside after the Edge Rusher overaggressively pursues the RB. Bateman just didnt do his job. I guess he froze up in the game and didnt perform like he did in practice.

Pretty much this. Ultimately, it worked out better for Bama bc Coker was the better option for the remaining games than Bateman was, but the issue in that game was that Bateman never kept on the read even though it was ALWAYS there. It's a different game if he keeps it on those reads.

Bateman is Dobbs bad.

You may suspect this, heck you may be proven right, but you don't know this.

Why start him? Why even play him at all?

Because we don't know what the coaches know. From what we've heard/seen, we could ask the same thing 'bout Barnett...he's been a turnover machine in scrimmages and practices, based on what we've heard. One of USC's strengths is their secondary...do we want a guy who's been a pick 6 machine throwing into their strength? I think we beat USC if we don't turn the ball over...so why start your most turnover prone QB? Barnett may end up being great, but if we go strictly by what we've heard from scrimmages/practice, why would you want him to start over Bateman?

Obviously, if Saban starts Barnett, then there's much more to the story than what we've heard/seen...but the same goes for Bateman...

Saban implied that Hurts may play. Said something to the effect of (paraphrasing), "I never said someone wouldn't play. I said we were preparing two to start. I'm surprised no one in your industry picked up on that. We have a plan for how we're going to do it. I'd love to tell you, but I'm not going to"

I read that as well. Loved Saban's last line...

That is a false rumor. Earlier in this thread I posted an article where Saban confirmed both players were healthy and ready to play, he just chose Bateman because he felt he would give us an advantage with the read option.

He didn't.

This makes me believe, Saban knows Hurts is the best but doesn't want to put him ahead of BB because he woukd automatically transfer. To me it seems he wants to do exactly whay I said he does; start off with seniority then let them play themselves either into the position or out.

Bateman is going to be mediocre Bateman. I think they all know this. That leaves it to BB to take it by the reigns. If he meltsdown, it will be in a game for everybody to see. That way no one can question Saban when he brings in Hurts as a final solution.

It is up to BB. If he performs like he has in those scrimmages, I expect to see Hurts and BB and his family can't complain too much about it considering it wasn't a practice decision.

Uhhh, I guess we'll all hope that one of them "playing themselves out of the position" does not cost Bama a loss, eh ?

hahah I'm not worried at'tallllll

I dunno...the way Saban's started true freshmen at other positions, I don't think he really takes into account potential transfers...I think he just starts who he thinks gives Bama the best chance to win. In this case, I think he did it more for the reasons he already stated, as well as maybe wanting to take some of the pressure off Hurts and ease him into the position, if needed. If Hurts had been named the starter to begin the season, the pressure and expectations would've been through the roof...

Nobody is going to transfer until the end of the year at this point. Classes have started, they've used up this year of eligibility no matter what.

He's not making decisions based on transfers. Barnett was a 5 star, he does have talent. His problems have been mental, not physical.

Bingo. No way CNS was ever going to let that happen. I had a lot of fun fueling the team Hurts wagon, but I always knew there was a zero percent chance CNS was gonna start him day 1. Hes never done it before, and he will never do it in the future. Never. Zero chance. Its never, ever, ever, going to be the true freshman on day 1, snap 1.
