Being the optimist I am, I’m going to assume Avery Johnson wants out of this situation just as bad as we do, and agrees to a buyout (the only way we get rid of him this year). Who do you want as our next head coach and why?

My pick would be Thad Matta as he’s coached at a football school, has a fantastic resume, he’s only 52 and is currently available. If healthy and if he’s willing to get back into coaching is the unknown, but I think he’d be a great fit here otherwise.

Potential Hires:

Nate Oats is the only qualified candidate

Thad Matta. My two concerns with him though is:

A) How much is he going to want salary wise?

and

B) How will his health affect his coaching ability?

If not him, Alabama's going to have to roll the dice on a mid major. Nate Oats would be my second choice, but he's likely going to be offered by better programs. Jamie Dixon at TCU has been solid as well.

We’re paying Avery near $3 million. If he’s worth that, then Thad Matta is worth about whatever he want Bama to pay him.

1) Bruce Weber
2) Steve Forbes
3) Anybody not named Avery Johnson

Matta is worth more than $3 million, but that's my concern. How is Byrne going to convince the powers to pay Avery's ludicrous buyout and make a big splash hire? If it were football, there would be no questions asked. But when it comes to basketball, they don't have the same mindset because most of them are crackheads.

I think Johnson will go away for about $3 million. If he stubbornly stays through next season that’s all he would collect anyway after April 15. So why deal with all the headache and heartache until then ?

I think there’s a decent chance they can get Avery to agree to a lesser buyout. He has plenty of money, he has to be frustrated at this point and his son is graduating, so he might be looking for a way out too. If his buyout remains at 9 million, I don’t think he gets fired at all.

I guess Buzz Williams would be my favorite choice if we are just tossing out names. He’s got the personality, the toughness, and the winning pedigree. I don’t think we’d have any kind of shot at him though.

I’d be fine with Matta if healthy. He knows how to win.

Of the mid major guys, my favorite is Steve Forbes. Learned from Pearl and Gregg Marshall and has also been head coach in the juco ranks.

If they had some guts they would hire Bucky McMillan, who's a star in waiting.

I’d love Hoiberg, but that’s a hire that would scare me. He’s on record as hating recruiting which is troublesome. He also wouldn’t stick if he turned out a great hire. Still one of my top fantasy coaches, but there’s much more risk involved with him than Matta or Buzz.

It used to be Jack Doss. As an assistant... sure. Jumping in as a head coach? Forget about it.

Dixon is at his alma mater, TCU. Who's in Div. II or III worth a look? Are we willing to give assistant coaches a shot? If so, my two are Yaklich at Michigan and Tommy Loyd at Gonzaga.

What about Chris Jans? He had that incident that got him fired, but he could've been the man behind Greg Marshall. He has a great HC record.

If we’re going to gamble on mid-majors, throw Matt McMahon at Murray State in the mix. It appears he may have been some of the magic behind Steve Prohm’s record at Murray

I love all of you but I can't do this knowing Avery is coming back.
