I must have missed something. What is going on with Bryan Passink?

He posted this after the Arkansas game - not sure if it’s still work related

I’ve had to miss some games over the years due to work conflicts (like yesterday) but I did something I’ve not done in 23 years. I listened to an Alabama game on the radio... Awesome job by

Why would Phillon not be on there?

No Philon. Is this a mistake?

Sure there's some really good stats with Philon below the top 50 but It just means we've been even better on offense in the minutes played with Holloway + Allen + spot up shooters.

I don't think Bama defeats Tenner unless Philon plays - and plays within himself.

Has a lot to do with the teams we played.

2 Examples: we played Miss State at home without Philon. We played Tennessee without Allen and Holloway.

Said another way, a lot of the time when Philon was on the bench, it was due to us playing inferior competition. He wasn’t on the bench much towards the end of Purdue, Arkansas, etc. or during games like Gonzaga (37 min, 7 more than the next highest player), AZ (34 min, 8 more than next highest), Florida (30 min, 2 min more than everyone else), etc.

Oats moved his Ala winning % to over 70% last week with 2 wins. 2 more wins in a row would get his overall coaching % over 70%. Elite.

Calipari and Sean Miller only active SEC coaches higher.

That's a good point. Even though there's an adjustment for opponents, it's usually not really enough to compensate for the differences in games where an inferior team lets you feel really comfortable running offense and one that makes everything a war.

On a side note, that's where I think our defense struggles. The attempt to play so much to statistics works ok but doesn't often seem to just completely frustrate opponents. Which you can do easier at the college level than the NBA.

It’s even more pronounced when you’re a team that can’t handle other teams with bigs like we are now. No amount of adjustments can compensate for the fact that we will get destroyed on the glass against FL, Purdue, and AZ regardless of what guards are playing.

To emphasize that, AU and Mizzou beat FL despite both being a worse team than us. But they have enough size and physicality to not get destroyed by FL’s size. When Philon is playing more minutes than everyone else against teams we can’t matchup with down low, it’s “somewhat unfairly” bringing his metrics down.

I’m hopeful we keep Sherrell, Onyejiaka, and Jemison for 26-27. Bristow returning would be a pleasant and welcomed surprise for me too.

If we had those 4, another freshman or transfer big, and Holloway then we may be a very good defensive team. Holloway is getting better in that respect. He’ll never be elite but average would be enough with the proper front court configuration.

and Holloway

His defense has definitely improved from last year, and you can tell his physicality is better as well just by seeing how much better he is at finishing at the rim on offense. Those extra 10-15 lbs have really helped him.

That said, he’s got to stop fouling people 40 ft from the basket and I don’t think anyone has done a particularly good job on trying to isolate him and attack him. Ky tried to do it against Trelly when MoD was backing him down 1v1, but I haven’t seen anyone try to have a guard post Holloway up or try to get Holloway switched on a wing/big and post him up continuously. I think AZ had Bradley attack him a bit IIRC and there was at least 1 other team that was driving him to the rim and drawing fouls on him, but overall he’s been a lot better than last year.
