Yes and how could poor ole Alabama have ever developed him to that generational wealth. We just can’t compete. I’d have to look it up, but I bet we hardly ever send players to the NFL or win anything of note.

Clearly he had to think of his family and not play with the bunch of scrubs he called teammates. Bravo for him.

Saban left. Just a bit of a game changer.

And he went to play for Ryan Day who, at the time, had never won a championship and the Ohio State fans wanted fired for losing to Michigan.

Ryan Day isn’t some defensive savant and they brought in Matt Patricia who was looked at as a joke at the time.

If you want to be a Downs fan then go ahead. I think he’s soft and I think running from the grind shows lack of character. He could’ve done all the things he did at Ohio State at Alabama.

I’m sure the OSU fans like him. That’s fine. I honestly wish he’d just gone there from the beginning.

Scored late in the NCG against Clemson but we couldn't hold on defense.

People, even Bama fans, seem to have selective memories of that game. Hurts played horrible in that game. He completed just 2 passes of 10+ yards. 60% of his yards came on 3 plays the longest of which was a busted coverage on OJ Howard. Defense got worn out and Sark almost completely stopped using the RBs once Bo got hurt. Instead he had Hurts drop back about 35 times and which resulted in 7 3-and-outs and an average drive time of 2.5 min.

The next year was just weird. He was so predictable (gonna always roll to the right) and people just had it figured out. UGA absolutely shut him down. I don't know what got him scared, but I think he played scared, at least in passing situaitons.

What you’re describing here actually started the prior year post Iron Bowl. He threw 2 INTs there and preceded to throw 0 INTs in 3 post season games. They probably told him to play it safe( postseason play now) because he had thrown 9 INTs and had 12 fumbles in 12 regular season games.

Problem is he also averaged 109 passing yards and 38 rushing yards in those 3 final games. And that continued into next season especially against good defenses

I also disagree it was Daboll more so he had a ton of work to do. He was a very raw passer and once defenses adjusted he didn’t know how to make up for it. It took a few years to become better. Even when he got to the NFL, it took him until year 3 to become the player he is today

Everyone wants all this loyalty from players, but none of the fans are going to be around to help pay the rent and buy groceries in ten years if things don’t work out.

Yeah, because we are what are called "fans," dumb arse. Our #1 loyalty is to the school we grew up cheering for and we'll be damned if we don't expect the same thing from players who sign on the dotted line to put on that crimson and white uniform. I couldn't care less about what they do after they leave Alabama, just like they don't care ANYTHING about me while they are in school or after they leave the school. They don't know me and I don't know them. All I know is that I cheer for Alabama Football on Saturdays in the fall.

If they ain't wearing crimson....you know the rest.

I’m not a Downs fan. But if Downs had underperformed starting Day One and the program had a chance to replace him with some hotshot transfer out of UCLA or Texas or Clemson or wherever, no fans would care about the loyalty aspect.

I don’t know what “grind” he ran from. He obviously didn’t see it happening with DeBoer and wanted to leave.

2x All-American, Thorpe Award, national champion, and projected Top 10 pick is hard to beat. Not a bad year for Mendoza either, leaving Cal - and he was there three years.

Despite relentless glazing by Globetrotter747 who also did the splits on it and spun most of the day, NFL GMs were not moved by his expertise as a former SEC champion until geriatric sex addict Jerry Jones at pick 11. More details as they emerge.

I wouldn't say that he hurt his development, some of the best he ever looked at Bama was when he came in for Tua.

Mike Locksley was the OC in 2018 when Tua started over Jalen Hurts. Dan Enos was QB Coach and big in the development of both.

Thanks for the clarification, definitely got the years mixed up there. I don't think it's any surprise that Daboll really preferred Tua over Jalen and maybe Jalen did take a step back.

"This is as fine a young man as you're ever going to find to be a part of your team," Saban said of Downs. "He's a great competitor. He's got great character. He's so instinctive as a player. He can play downhill, he can play in the box, he can play the deep field, he can play man to man. This guy is a tremendous, tremendous person and competitor.

“And I tell you what, there's only a few guys that I love more than this guy as a player on our football team, and he did a great job and improved even more in Ohio State."
