I think he is indeed suggesting that.

So you suggest, on the road against our in-state rival with an SECCG berth and playoff bid on the line, that we should bench our 11-game starter for either a 3rd year guy who has never started or a true freshman?
I suppose you would have stayed with Hurts in the NC against UGA. Good thing you weren’t the coach.

Change the QB at halftime then, if Ty is playing bad, we usually stink it up on offense in the 3rd quarter though, so maybe we'll switch out the QBs at the start of the fourth. That sound good enough?

Nope, I was openly wondering about it during the half and was floored to see our staff actually do it. Everything is contextual. You’ve got nothing to lose but a national championship. You don’t have to worry about losing your starter psychological disposition the rest of the season. You don’t have to risk taking a short term boost for a long term problem when your new QB hits a wall when the tape gets out on him.

I definitely wouldn’t do it before halftime unless Ty throws 2-3 picks and the game is getting away from you. No reasonable person is saying we should start another QB or even bring another on in early. Only if Ty just doesn’t have it, and it’s pretty clear we are going to lose if we don’t try something else (or 80% clear).
The season’s over if we lose. At some point, it’s stupid to not try something different if Ty shows he is rattled and playing poorly like he has the past several games.

You do realize our season is over if we lose on Saturday, right? Very similar situation to the NC game in that regard.

Well, we will have to see the context on Saturday if losing is in the cards. In abstract, I just don’t see it. True road game in a stadium that is uniquely amped because of the jersey our guys are wearing. No time to be prepping for this possibility. The rumors before the Clemson game were that Tua was getting a serious look in practice. Hurts was at the end of his rope and they’d pulled him at halftime of the Sugar Bowl if the game dictated it.

I’ll give you that Tua had more time to prep during the bowl game prep than what Keelon would have, but I’m assuming Mack would be who’d we go to and he’s had plenty of prep at this point. I’m not saying he would save us in the 2nd half or perform well, but it shouldn’t be due to lack of familiarity with the offense (and I assume we’ve been prepping for AU for the same amount of time we prepped for that UGA NC game given we had a semifinal right before it vs. an FCS cupcake)

Additionally, this ain’t the 2010s anymore. Alabama was putting in Tua in the 2nd quarter of some games because they blew out 75% or more their opponents. These backups have basically played in two games this year against vastly inferior competition. Tua got probably 3-4 games where he took snaps against an SEC team’s 1s.

Comparing Ty Simpson to Jalen Hurts is fricking hilarious
If we had 2017 Hurts as our QB we would legitimately be 6-5
People are really jumping the shark, we gotta stop wasting time arguing with them

Fair point, but Mack is still a 3rd year guy and not a true freshman

We had worse last year and were a Vandy loss away from the Playoffs. Some people love to be dramatic

Agree. People saying we would be 6-5 with 2017 Jalen Hurts are probably a complete waste of time to argue with. Even a horrible Milroe took us to 9-3 last year.

Bryant played backup qbs regularly. And back then it didnt seem to shatter a starters confidence to share some snaps with the backup.
Sometime quarterbacks bring unique attributes. Sometime your starter is simply having an off day.
Sometimes, believe it or not, a backup simply improves and earns some snaps.
We are now in an era where the Bama Qb owns the position. Moreover, he owns every snap in a non absolute blowout.
I like the idea of treating the QB as you would any other position. And that means, giving him the majority of snaps but not all.
The consensus seems to be that its some sort of insult to switch qbs occasionally. Wasn't always that way.
We suffered though this in 2017. We suffered through it last year. And its happening again. These guys on the bench are not chopped liver. Don't make them wait half a season to even see meaningful snaps. That is stupid. Every starter is a play away from injury.

Another reference to a coach in a different era., different culture.

This board has become borderline unreadable. I don't know if it's actual Bama fans who are ate up with Chicken Little Syndrome (Lord knows there are plenty of those out there) or if it's rival fans pretending to be Bama fans trolling to stir things up, but this place has become almost as unhinged as the Tiger Rant. And that's shameful
No question about it. It’s always had the troll accounts. But it’s gotten to the point recently that I think that all of the real Alabama fans need to abandon the site. You can’t have a civil conversation on here without trolls disrupting things.

I remember hearing the same comments about people calling for Mike Shula to be replaced.
Why not just admit that you are thin skinned and don't like differing views?
Exactly what sorts of discussions would you permit if this were your board?
Posted on 11/23/25 at 6:24 pm to RiverCityTider
There's differing views and then there's just horrendous takes. We're not remotely close to benchable quarterback play.
