I think we can say that Smart would have been a good heir for Saban here had he stayed

Looking at his gameplan, he basically tried to Bama us to death and for most of the game, he executed it to perfection. Stuffed our run, forcing the game to the air and forcing 3 and outs... their offense picked apart the D little by little, resulting in a lot of 3rd downs that they almost always converted, killing the will of the opposing defense and creating frustratingly long, clock eating drives for the opposition.

If he orchestrated a season like UGA just had, even with the loss I think we'd all say, he's not Nick, but he's certainly no Ray Perkins. We can still compete for titles.

(Kudos for Saban being enough of a madman to see what Kirby was doing and decided to do what has always been our kryptonite, a gifted QB with an arm and receivers to pull the defense apart.

I'm going to nix this real quick.
Smart wanted the Georgia job. That was his dream job. So if he took Alabama job and Georgia job opens up tomorrow, he would take it in a heartbeat. If he had taken the Auburn job... He would still take the Georgia job.

Secondly, Smart was an a-hole. There was article about that. He burned lot of bridges so no, He would not be heir to Saban's spot.

Saban isn't going anywhere for next 6-8 years.. so why are we discussing this?

It was. But things change. Urban Meyer's dream job was always Notre Dame, yet he still chose Florida over it.

If I remember correctly, part of the speculation when UGA fired Richt was they were afraid someone like South Carolina would hire Kirby, he would get 2-3 years experience, and Saban would retire and Bama's first call would have been Kirby.

I would have been fine with that. Not just on the field stuff, but he recruits well. He is never satisfied. He is a players coach in the locker room. I think Kirby will thrive at UGA.
