How was the 2005 OL that damn bad?
That was the "honk if you sacked Brodie" year. I remember the center getting hurt against MSU but how was the whole unit that putrid?

The whole offense sucked after Prothro went done. After he went down the offense scored 13, 6, 35 (Utah St), 17, 13, 18 and 13 points.

Probation. Our starting 22 were mostly very solid that season, but there was absolutely zero depth behind them. J.B. Clausner's injury in the Mississippi State game was the death knell of our Cinderella season.

That's it. Chris Capps should have been a backup at Mississippi State. Instead, he was probably our best tackle. The defense was pretty darn good but we all knew late November would expose our lack of talent on offense compared to Auburn and LSU.

If it weren't for Joe Kines' defense and a shite non conference schedule, that season would have been a complete disaster.

On the flip side, one of the most interesting "What If's" in Alabama Football is what if Brodie hadn't gotten hurt in 2004?

Brodie's entire career is such a huge what if. Injuries to him, and injuries to teammates, constantly derailed his career. Dude probably had the best pure arm talent of any QB I've seen at Alabama. Including Tua. But his lower body never let him get the most out of it. Dude threw a beautiful ball, and could throw it anywhere in the stadium.

And to think Fran recruited him to Alabama to run the power option. Had Franchione remained at Alabama, Croyle would have been pulverized in 2003.

The dream what if 2005 season has a gnarlier end the later you let the dream stay alive.

Beat LSU? The 2005 Iron Bowl becomes 10/13 levels of a painful fall.

Beat Auburn? Get toasted by D. J. Shockley and UGA in Atlanta.

Beat UGA? SEC Champions, ok that's nice, but we're headed to a BCS Bowl, most likely the Sugar vs Steve Slaton, Pat White and the 1 loss West Virginia.

Somehow make the Natty? Texas and USC were always outside our control and both had way more built in clout that would probably keep out ceiling at #3.... but sure, let's suppose.... well, Defending Champion USC is not going anywhere, so MAYBE the gyping of 2004 Auburn swings voters to the SEC. And we face Matt Leinart, Reggie Bush and USC.

Let's just say the 2018 Title Game wouldn't be our biggest championship bowl loss anymore.
