I was hoping one of them would be qb coach when we add the 10th coach. So I guess it'll still be Daboll, though most of his career he coached tight ends and damn sure hasn't helped Hurts get better. Awesome.

Tells me the 10th spot will go to the defense, IMO.

10th spot needs to be someone in charge of calling timeouts.

It already has. Pete Golding was described as the "tenth assistant" in the press release.

Oh I didn’t see that. However the defensive staff shakes out I still think the extra coach is going to be a defensive coach.

Nobody is going to be good enough to teach our running back how to be a quarterback.

Justin Thomas is our FG kicker "head" coach. He fixed Pap right up.

We've added Golding, but we still have one vacancy, due to Pruitt leaving.

A former Tide assistant contributed to Pete Golding landing at Alabama
quote:

Before hiring or even interviewing his newest Alabama assistant coach, Nick Saban sought feedback from a former member of the Crimson Tide staff.

While Bo Davis had to leave the Crimson Tide under less than ideal circumstances, Saban maintains a relationship with his former defensive line coach and still very much respects his opinion.

Prior to meeting with Pete Golding, Saban called Davis.

The conversation only lasted about 10 minutes but Davis gave a strong endorsement of Golding, whom he worked with at University of Texas-San Antonio since February.

"He was just asking me what kind of coach he was, whether he had energy and so forth," Davis said of the conversation with Saban. "And I was like, 'Very energetic guy. Has a lot of energy. And he brings a lot to the table.'"

Davis didn't know much about Golding before arriving at UTSA but was impressed by what he saw during their year together at UTSA.

This was year two for Golding as UTSA's defensive coordinator after inheriting a unit that ranked 101st nationally in total defense in 2015. After improving to 55thnationally in total defense in 2016, UTSA's Golding-led defense will finish this season ranked in the top-10 nationally in both total defense and scoring defense.

Only Alabama, Wisconsin, Michigan and Clemson are ranked ahead of UTSA in total defense.

"He's good with the kids," Davis said of Golding. "He's a coach that works well with the kids. And his knowledge of the game and how he breaks it down and how he looks at it and how he gets the kids to play and so forth is what I really like about him."

It's still unclear what Golding's role will be at Alabama. All that's known at this point is Saban hired him as the Tide's 10th assistant and that Golding will be a defensive assistant which was expected considering he's been a defensive coordinator and/or a defensive backs coach ever since landing his first full-time coaching job at Tusculum in 2007.

When Saban hired Golding in early December, he told him, "Let's get through these two games and we'll figure it out after that."

"And I was on board with that for sure," Golding said at Alabama's Sugar Bowl Media Day.
