Offense - It was bad. real bad. Blake Simms A-Day bad. I'm not sure the 1st team Offense would have scored on the second or first team Defense if they had played all day long.
QB's - it was not good. Coker and Barnett took every rep with the 1's. Coker consistently threw over and behind receivers and seemed late on every throw. Threw 1 Int. Barnett threw 3 Int's (2 would've been pick 6's). Bateman and Morris took every snap with the 2's. Both had some good throws but it was basically more of the same. Bateman had 1 int. Cornwell took every snap with the 3's. Led the only TD drive of the main scrimmage against the 3rd team D. Bateman and Morris both threw TD passes at the end of the day during 2 minute work.
Rb's - didn't run the ball much. Drake didn't play. Henry didn't run it much at all. Harris ran it the most but didn't get much when he did. Our front 7 on D is nasty. Harris had 2 run from the 2 yard line during goal line work and got stuffed both times.
WR's - didn't do a whole lot. Stewart caught maybe 2 passes. Ridley looked good but we kept trying to swing it out to him like we did Cooper and that just wasn't working today. Kief had a few good catches. Foster had 1 decent catch and run. About it.
TE's - OJ dropped about 3 passes over the middle - knew he was going to get lit up and just dropped it. Florney- Smith had a good TD catch from Morris in 2 minute work.
OL - seemed decent - gave up a few sacks. Jonathan Allen was in the backfield all day. Gave up at least 3 batted balls -all thrown by Coker. Couldn't tell much.
DL - outstanding - we all knew that - we are almost 3 deep at every spot.
LB's - outstanding again - D.Lee had a Int in the end zone during goal line work.
DB's - much improved. Fitzpatrick will start at corner and would've been the mvp today. had 2 int's and at least 4 pub's. Eddie jackson looked great at safety. made some great plays. only db i saw get burned all day was Geno Smith. Harrison is a better safety but I think he and Jackson play the same position. Maurice Smith did a great job. was basically matched up with OJ Howard in the slot all day. Only allowed 1 catch. Cyrus was Cyrus. had 1 int when Bateman tried to throw over his head.
Special teams - Punter is taken care of for the next three years. Griffin hit his first 2 kicks both from 45-50 and then missed 3 in a row from under 35. Just inconsistent again like last year. Rayborn made all his attempts. Kickoff return wasn't live but it looked like Cyrus and Henry on kickoff returns and Ridley on punt returns.
All I can remember right now. I'll update if I think of anything more.

So frick our lives on offense.
This Minkah hype is fricking unbelievable.

I would not judge the offense based on situational scrimmages.

he getting a lot of reps since Hump and brown are gimpy. We are deep at this position with underclassman.

Remember in the Spring when Harrison came in and was learning the playbook and coming along so well? Minkah's Fall Camp is that Harrison Spring on steroids.
Secondary is loaded with talent, I think Mel Tucker is gonna prove to be a great hire, the D can carry this team, but hopefully the O is stout. This time last year I don't think there was a lot of good things being said about our QBs. This scrimmage was a lot of situational work against a defense that is far too good and experienced.
Still, I hope practicing against such a good D makes the O better instead of killing their confidence.

Sounds like 2011.
I'm not too worried about the offense. I'm really hoping the oline has improved. If so, we'll be fine. One of the QB's will be good enough. Saban is motivating them right now.

Wish we would run the damn ball more this year. Need some RB depth.

If these QB reports are accurate, we will.

I hope we don't have Henry returning kicks. We don't need him or Drake hurt. It sucks that Coker is still late with the ball.

Has anyone heard anything about Lester Cotton? He hasn't been seen for 3 practices.

This leads me to believe that it's going to be Alec Morris if things keep going like they are.
The Nick Saban I know will always go with the guy that makes fewer mistakes over a more talented guy who's mistake prone.

there really is no way to win in camp if your D does great or your O does great, it means the other must suck. no telling until you actually play. im choosing to believe that the D is going to awesome and the O will look much better against normal teams. we certainly have the pieces on D to be epic.

I'll never understand why people always say this. Kick and punt returns can have as much impact on a game as any other aspect. Arenas' punt returns are one of the biggest reasons Bama won a NC in 2009. Yet, most of our fans don't want to "risk" putting our best players back there. What are we saving them for?

I can't remember the last time I saw a returner get injured. It is mostly the blockers getting injureda.

I was fortunate enough to attend the scrimmage today, the following is a mix of what I saw and my opinions.
Coker started and was very underwhelming. While he eventually made the right decisions and didn't throw any interceptions, he was very late and indecisive. On several occasions he would have good gains but was a beat or two late, which caused the receiver to run out of field or allowed the defender to make the play.
The order was Coker, Barnett, Bateman, Morris, & Cornwell. I can only assume that Cornwell was being disciplined, because he only got 1 series. Barnett looked in control and was decisive, but threw into coverage too much and had 3 picks. Two of them for TD's, he's not there yet but will be soon. Bateman made a couple good throws to end the scrimmage but was "eh" for the rest. In the short time he had Cornwell was by far the most impressive. Even though he was with the 3's on O he went right down the field on the defense which consisted of a mix of 1's and 2's. Morris had a very good scrimmage, made a bunch of good throws and didn't see any that I thought were "bad" throws or int's. IN MY OPINION Cornwell or Morris should be the guy, allow Barnett to grow. This was a passing scrimmage 90% passing, no running backs really stood out. The best thing to come from the O was that the 1st team Oline looked very impressive in pass protection. There were only 2 sacks against them, both past D. Jackson. One on Bateman by Tim Williams and one on Coker by Evans.
Now for the best part, the Defense!!!
This is going to be a GREAT defense. The best hire in all of football ( college or pro) was Mel Tucker. The secondary was fantastic! While the QB was just average for the most part, the DB's were always in position. They consistently turned to find the ball and knocked down over 10 balls, along with 5 int's. No receivers getting lost in coverage and were there every time in run support. The starters were G. Smith and Jackson at safety, and Jones and the next top 10 pick at CB for Bama Fitzpatrick. I want to say this about Fitzpatrick, he will be the best corner in the country as a sophomore. The kid is unreal!!! We are at least 6 deep at corner, Brown and Hump are going to be very good, Averrett and Sylvester are as well. Didn't see much of Sheffield but I have heard good things on him also.
No one will be running on this team. They are 10-11 deep on the line with no drop off. Payne has come in and is playing at a high level too, just to add more. We also have a plethora of pass rushers in Evans, Williams, Anderson, Miller, Hand, etc... I can't see 3rd down D being a problem this year. I truly feel this defense will be just below the 2009 team. There are several leaders, but just one Alpha on this team, Ragland is The Man. He was all over the few slackers on the team, great to see.
With just average QB play that doesn't throw int's, this will be a championship caliber team. Again these are just my opinions and observations. Really looking forward to this season and watching this team.
