Injury sidelines Bama QB commit Taulia Tagovailoa from Alabama-Mississippi all-star game

quote:

Alabama's all-star team needs another quarterback.

Alabama quarterback commit Taulia Tagovailoa’s shoulder injury will keep him sidelined and out of the upcoming Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic, a pair of unnamed sources told AL.com.

The Thompson senior -- one of two quarterbacks selected to play in the Dec. 17 all-star game in Montgomery -- played with an injured throwing shoulder during last week’s 52-7 loss to Central-Phenix City in the Class 7A championship game. He threw for a career-low 44 yards in the loss, but refused to use the injury as an excuse.

"There's no excuse and say if my arm was good I'd do this or that," he said. "We played a great team. Sometimes you've got to battle through injuries. I'm sure some of their guys were battling through injuries, too. There's no excuse. At the end of the day, it's whether you win or lose."

The AHSAA has not announced the roster move, but that is expected to happen before players report Wednesday.

Tagovailoa suffered the injury, which he described as a strained labrum and rotator cuff, in the 31-28 semifinal victory over Hoover, but it wasn’t revealed until after the championship-game loss.

Tagovailoa is also scheduled to play the All-American Bowl in San Antonio and the Polynesian Bowl in Hawaii, both in January. It’s unclear if the injury will prevent him from playing in those events.

"I've got to get my shoulder straight," Tagovailoa said.

Tagovailoa finished the season with 3,728 yards, 35 TD passes and just five interceptions. In 2017, he finished 287-of-435 for 3,820 yards, with 36 TD passes and eight interceptions, even with a new set of receivers.

Auburn quarterback commit Bo Nix is the other quarterback selected to play in the all-star game, which features the top senior football players from the two states. Players are scheduled to report Wednesday and the game is set for Monday, Dec. 17, at 6:30 p.m., at Montgomery's Cramton Bowl.

Alabama all-star officials must now turn to finding a replacement for Tagovailoa. Possibilities include Alabama quarterback commit and Hewitt-Trussville senior Paul Tyson, James Clemens senior and Vanderbilt commit Jamil Muhammad and LSU commit and Central-Phenix City senior Peter Parrish.

But those players' availability could be influenced by if they're an early college enrollee, which would allow them to join their college team and participate in on-campus bowl practices. Tyson will definitely be an early enrollee, which likely excludes him from consideration.

Other possible replacements include Clay-Chalkville’s Willie Miller, a three-year starter; Falkville’s Aaron Dove, who threw 46 touchdown passes; and Westminster Christian’s Ian Theis, who had 36 TD passes.

Alabama's roster also includes Alabama commits Christian Williams, a defensive back from Daphne; defensive lineman DJ Dale of Clay-Chalkville; Hewitt-Trussville offensive linemen Pierce Quick; Thompson offensive lineman Amari Kight of Thompson; and Hoover's Will Reichard, who will handle punting and place-kicking duties.

Other Auburn commits include Hoover receiver George Pickens and Hewitt-Trussville receiver Ja'Varrius Johnson.

Alabama holds a 22-9 edge in the all-time all-star series, but Mississippi won 42-7 last year, the largest margin of defeat for Alabama in the series history.

I didn't know Dazalin Worshom was injured, what is he having repaired in surgery today?

Hip.

He apparently injured it before the season began so it's not too serious.

Taulia and another Alabama commit named finalists for MaxPreps Polynesian Bowl Player of the Year

quote:

Thompson quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa and DeMatha Catholic (Md.) defensive back Demarcco Hellums are two of the 10 finalists for the MaxPreps Polynesian Bowl Player of the Year award.

Only players who have been selected to play in the 2019 or 2020 Polynesian Bowl are eligible for the award. Tagovailoa and Hellums are scheduled to play 2019 game, which is set for Jan. 19, at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu and televised by CBS Sports Network.

The 6-foot-1, 20-pound Hellums, projected to play safety at Alabama, excelled on offense, defense and special teams in 2018, finishing with nine interceptions and scoring eight touchdowns.

Tagovailoa led Thompson to a runner-up finished in Class 7A -- falling 52-7 to Central-Phenix City in last week’s championship game, passing for a career-low 44 yards. He finished the season with 3,728 passing yards, 35 TD passes and just five interceptions. In 2017, he finished 287-of-435 for 3,820 yards, with 36 TD passes and eight interceptions.

MaxPreps, the national website dedicated to high school sports, will announce the Polynesian Bowl Player of the Year award winner on Dec. 18. Other finalists include BYU quarterback commit Jacob Conover, Alabama defensive line target Ishamel Sopsher and uncommitted quarterback DJ Uiagalelie, another Alabama target who was recently named the California Gatorade Player of the Year.

LSU's board reported they offered Sopsher's brother as a package deal. Essentially willing to use 2 slots to get Sopsher to sign with them. The definition of Desperation?

You're good in my book. Some of your fellow UGA posters took exception to me answering a direct question in your thread yesterday. I don't get the animosity.

Yeah, we called them out for it. You’ve been nothing but respectful, and even though we may not agree on certain things from time to time, as long as you’re respectful no one should care about that. Good luck today via Webb. Hope we get him, but couldn’t blame him at all for going to Bama.

And Powhound, zero chance you get access to our board based on how much you hate us

I grew up in Frazer. As you noted, John Ed retired years ago, and I think they're actually on their 3rd pastor since then. They haven't been able to find someone to replace John Ed (or Joe Pat), and the church just hasn't been the same when I've visited with my family.

Tim Watts said Georgia's Pittman made the trip to Oxford. So that's probably that.

I'd prefer it go to a defensive lineman.

With limited spots I have been saying Neal and Sanders on the O side of the ball and focus the rest on the D side of the ball. Unless Wright wants to come to UA.
