OTHERS

We limited this exercise to just 10 names, but those 10 aren't the only ones Miami is courting.

– CB Akeem Dent: The Under Armour All-American is committed to Florida State, but attended two games at Hard Rock Stadium this season and will return for an official visit according to 247Sports' Zach Blostein.

– OL Darnell Wright: The five-star offensive tackle has always talked about visiting Miami, but has yet to make the trip down from the Mountain State. Tennessee leads on the Crystal Ball.

– DE Justin Eboigbe: The Alabama defensive end commit will be at UM for an official visit the weekend of Dec. 7 with his parents. He's talking with a number of others schools, but a flip isn't likely.

Florida Spotlight: Sunshine State's top undecided prospects

quote:

The start of the Early Signing Period is less than a month away, and a good portion of the country’s most coveted prospects will be off the board when it arrives. Today, we focus on the Sunshine State and examine five Florida-based recruits to watch as they prepare to sign letters of intent.

Trey Sanders

CONTENDERS: Alabama, Florida

Sanders’ family ties to Florida have been written about for what seems like years. His older brother attends the school and the five-star running back is incredibly familiar with the Gainesville campus. The fact that Dan Mullen has started to turn the struggling Gators around in less than one full season is also encouraging for UF.

Still, besting Alabama on the recruiting trail is not much easier than beating the Tide on the field and such is UF’s task here. Sanders recently visited Florida State, but he’s unlikely to choose FSU. Sanders was committed to Alabama as a young prospect and that commitment lasted more than a year before he backed off the pledge prior to his senior season. He has an upcoming official visit to Tuscaloosa, which many think will help Nick Saban seal the deal.

Evan Neal

CONTENDERS: Alabama, Florida State, Miami

Neal was legitimately impressed by a recent visit to Florida State that gave the Seminoles a dose of life when it comes to the five-star’s recruitment. That said, Alabama remains the team beat. Miami is also in the mix and has been for some time, but the interest between Neal and the Hurricanes doesn’t seem to be as incredibly strong as it once was. The massive offensive tackle was once an Alabama commit but re-opened his recruitment prior to the season. Neal will visit Alabama alongside his five-star teammate Trey Sanders this weekend and it’s easy to imagine a situation in which the two become a package deal of sorts.

Neal doesn’t say much of interest about his recruitment during interviews, so the potential for a shocker certainly exists here. And both Florida State and Miami could be the beneficiary of such an event.

Southeast Spotlight: Five recruits to track as Early Signing Period nears

quote:

The start of the December Signing Period is just a month way, with most of the class of 2019 prospects likely to put pen to National Letters of Intent. Despite the time to make a decision winding down, there are still plenty of big-name prospects still undecided. Today, we take a look at some uncommitted prospects in the Southeast that fans will be keeping a close eye on down the stretch.

Clay Webb

Contenders: Alabama, Auburn, Clemson and Georgia

Breakdown: The word around Webb is, he will not use any official visits before he announces his decision on Dec. 10. He is very guarded, and he is not one that is going to tip his hand about his recruitment. Alabama was the school early most felt Webb would sign with, but over the last few months, Clemson and Georgia have had more buzz. Webb will likely be back in Tuscaloosa this weekend for the Iron Bowl, so this will be the Crimson Tide’s final shot. Could Clemson or Georgia convince Webb to visit officially in the coming weeks? Auburn looks to be fourth in this race right now, but does anyone really know the order? This has been one of the more interesting recruiting races to cover in recent years. It will come to an end soon.

Nakobe Dean

Contenders: Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, LSU, Ole Miss and Texas A&M

Breakdown: Is Dean tipping his hand by returning to Alabama this weekend for an unofficial visit? The Crimson Tide received the first official visit over the summer and they could be tough to beat. Dean has taken official visits to Auburn and Georgia this fall, and the Bulldogs have been viewed as a top contender for months. LSU is expected to host him for an official visit on Dec. 7, and you cannot sleep on the Tigers. His older brother plays at Ole Miss, so he is very familiar with Oxford and will not take an official visit there. Texas A&M received an official visit over the weekend, but the Aggies are likely fifth or sixth on his list. We know Dean is headed for the SEC, but which school will it be? Alabama and Georgia could be the ones on top as we head into the final weeks.

Alabama, Auburn in-state commits discuss Iron Bowl

quote:

It’ll be a little tough for Ja’Varrius Johnson to attend his first Iron Bowl game this Saturday, in Tuscaloosa at Bryant-Denny Stadium, and root for Auburn.

Johnson grew up an Alabama fan, for as long as he’s known anything about the sport of football. He watched every year with family, friends, parents friends. Some were Alabama fans, some rooted for Auburn.

But Johnson — a Hewitt-Trussville WR that committed to play at Auburn in June — had previously had his allegiance with maroon and white. This year, he’ll be in the minority of in-person Tigers fans hoping for a massive upset.

“It’s gonna be kinda hard, because, you know, I’ve been rooting for Alabama my whole life," Johnson said. "And I now I’m an Auburn commit, and I’m gonna have to root against team that I’ve always went to. I mean, that’s how it is sometimes.”

Johnson isn’t the only Auburn commit that’s dealing with that. Nehemiah Pritchett, a cornerback from Jackson who committed to Auburn earlier this month is also an Alabama fan. He said “a good bit” of Crimson Tide gear that likely won’t get to see the light of day anymore.

But for whatever team these kids grew up rooting for — and regardless of which team they’re going to play for — there is a constant among the top commits in the state that decide to stay close to home. The Iron Bowl is a staple of their lives growing up. It’s a tradition, like any other holiday, with memories that they’ll always remember from watching the game.

“I’ve actually never been to one,” said Pierce Quick, an OT Alabama commit who is the No. 2 player in the state. “This will be my first one to go to, and I’m really excited to go to it. But growing up a fan of Alabama, and living in the state of Alabama, it’s always been a big deal. And watching it every year, that was almost like Christmas in November.”

Quick said every year they’ll go to his parents' friend’s house, and they have a kid who is in Quick’s grade, and they all hang out. He said his first Iron Bowl memory was a year that Auburn “won pretty big, it was a while, while back." Aside from 2017, the last time Auburn won an Iron Bowl by more than a touchdown was 2005, when Quick would have been around 4 years old.

Others' first memories are much more recent. For Pritchett, it was the kick-six miracle Auburn win in 2013. For another player, who’s only lived in Alabama a year, but is the No. 8 recruit in the state, he hadn’t even watched the game for seven years before seeing it in 2017.

“I think the last time I watched it was when Cam Newton played, from Hawaii,” said Thompson quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa, who moved to Alabama in 2017. “I think that was probably when they came back against Alabama. It means a lot, at the end of the day I’m just there to support my brother and Alabama. I hope Alabama wins it.”

Perhaps the game holds as much tradition as possible for Jackson Bratton, a linebacker from Muscle Shoals. He’s an Alabama commit and rated the No. 3 recruit in the state for 2020.

He and his family are the host for a major get together, every year, ever since he was a little boy, he said. There are around at least 15 people in the home. His best memory is the 2008 Iron Bowl, when Alabama won 36-0 over Auburn.

“That was one to remember,” Bratton said. “I was a little bitty boy, then.”

Some people at the home were Auburn fans, though. And he remembers running out to write on their car after the game.

“It’s gonna mean a lot," Bratton said. "It always does mean a lot to any Alabama football player. But, you know, it’s something to take seriously. But it’s something that’s fun and you’ll remember for the rest of your life, also. I think when I get down to Alabama and I get to play in those Iron Bowls, it’ll be something really to soak in.”

For Amari Kight, his first memory of the Iron Bowl is so clear, he remembers the game-winning play and year without much hesitation. A Roy Upchurch touchdown catch in 2009 to cap off an Alabama comeback win.

“It’s a big rivalry,” said Kight, an OT Alabama commit who is the No. 5 recruit in the state. “Whoever wins, they’re going to have bragging rights for the whole year, so it’s a pretty big deal.”

Almost all of these high school athletes will get their first in-person Iron Bowl experience on Saturday. It’s a huge recruiting tool, and you better believe the respective coaches will be using it as such, bringing their commits and targets to the game, to show them first-hand that they can’t get this experience anywhere else.

“They’re both two top teams going against each other," said Johnson, the Auburn commit. "... Being able to be from Alabama and play for either Alabama or Auburn, it’s really big being able to play in one of those games.”

ETA: I didn't realize Zipperer was ranked #136 overall in the Composite rankings.

Noa Pola-Gates recently took a visit to Arizona State for its win over UCLA and he had an excellent time.

The four-star defensive back from Gilbert (Ariz.) Williams Field is getting more and more comfortable with the Sun Devils.

“ASU was everything I expected,” Pola-Gates said. “I’ve been around the program for a few months now and I’m real comfortable with coach (Danny) Gonzales and coach (Tony) White. Coach (Shaun) Nua is family so I’m good with the entire defense.”

Alabama is definitely a frontrunner in Pola-Gates’ recruitment, Penn State has also made a huge impression and his visit to Nebraska went really well but there is a chance that the four-star could play in the Pac-12 as well.

It’s no secret that the Crimson Tide and the Nittany Lions have been involved for a long time but Arizona State is definitely making it intriguing.

“I can see myself staying home,” Pola-Gates said. “No doubt.

“Alabama has always been a dream school for me and to be coached by the DB guru, that’s next level. Penn State is a prestigious program with an amazing history with strong coaching. Nebraska is on the rise with an amazing staff. Coach (Scott) Frost, (Erik Chinander) and (Travis Fisher) are turning things around. Plus, I have family in Nebraska. USC is a family school, too, we have a long history there.

“This is the toughest decision I’ve ever had to make.”

The Gilbert Williams Field standout plans to make his commitment at the Polynesian Bowl in January. He will visit Alabama this weekend.

247Sports Composite update: Changes start at No. 1

quote:

247Sports released an update to its Top247 for the 2019 class last week and the moves had a ripple effect in the ranking for several prospects in the recruiting industry-generated 247Sports Composite. The Top247 and rankings from 247Sports’ team of analysts make up one third of the 247Sports Composite.

Thousand Oaks (Calif.) Oaks Christian defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux has been ranked No. 1 in the 247Sports Composite for the better part of the last two years since the initial rankings for the class were released. After regaining the No. 1 spot in August of last year, Thibodeaux had remained there with the exception of a brief, one-week reign by Amite (La.) High defensive tackle Ishmael Sopsher in February.

Thibodeaux’s slide in the Top247 was enough to drop him out of the top spot in the 247Sports Composite and Georgia defensive end commit Nolan Smith of IMG Academy moved to the top of the ranking.

The 6-foot-3, 232-pound Smith who has clocked a 4.55-second 40 and 42.2-inch vertical at various The Opening events this offseason has been committed to the Bulldogs since January of 2017 but is still taking official visits. He took an official to Tennessee last week and plans to visit Alabama, Ohio State and Penn State along with Georgia. He has one 247Sports Crystal Ball flip prediction in favor of the Crimson Tide and is set to play in the All-American Bowl in San Antonio on Jan. 5.

10 recruiting thoughts (Bone summary)

1.Zipperer is different from Billingsley as far as his skill set. Alabama is right up there near the top.
He is great pass catching tight end who can split out as a receiver. Zipperer is unique. He is more finesse whereas Billingsley can develop into a pass catcher/physical run blocker with his size. He's a take.
2.Jah-Marien Latham, lineman from Pickens County High School in Reform, Alabama, made a sudden announcement on Monday morning by his commitment to Alabama. I've heard of a few other 2020 players who have wanted to go ahead and commit (No, I won't reveal those names) and Alabama asked to hold off for now. More on the skill position side. Alabama typically won't turn down linemen
3.While there are some who have to wait to commit it’s very tough for Alabama to tell Chris Braswell, Rivals100 defensive end from St. Francis in Baltimore, to hold off.Braswell is certainly one of the premier targets in the 2020 class. I'd keep a very close eye on his visit this weekend.
4.Alabama will host seven official visitors.
Trey Sanders,Alabama is the team to beat
Evan Neal, very important weekend to sell his family
Nolan Smith, hard to imagine him flipping his commitment.
Antonio Alfano, official
Noa Pola-Gates,Alabama will accept if he wants to go ahead and announce after the weekend visit
Ty Robinson, is on Alabama's short list of defensive line targets who they would accept a commitment from if he wants to pull the trigger. Robinson has never visited Alabama
Christian Harris, Will Alabama accept his commitment if he wants to flip? I don't know. I know Alabama wants at least one more inside LB in this class. Nakobe Dean and Henry To'oto'o have been Alabama's top LB targets
5.So where do things currently stand with Wright and Webb?Wright hasn't visited Tuscaloosa since June, many think TN leads. It's hard to say with Webb. Honestly, nothing will surprise me. Alabama is pushing hard
6.Nakobe Dean, his first trip to Alabama this season. Dean took his official visit to Georgia last weekend.Alabama is seeking at least one more LB in this class. Dean and To'oto'o have been the two most heavily recruited targets at the position. I can't imagine Alabama telling both of these guys no.
7. Justin Eboigbe,is the biggest concern in regards to a possible flip. I believe Alabama can weather the storm especially the onslaught of recruiting attention from Tennessee to hang on to Eboigbe when all is said and done
8. Jordan Battle, four-star safety.Alabama has definitely become a major threat to the Buckeyes.I don't think Battle has made a decision yet as to when he will sign (December or February). However, I'm hearing the odds are probably in Alabama's favor if he signs in December. He definitely has a spot to commit with the Crimson Tide.
9.Lee Witherspoon, from North Jackson High School in Stephenson, Alabama. Witherspoon injured his back in the first half of his game and did not make it to Tuscaloosa on Saturday morning for the game. I've been told that Alabama was very impressed with Williams. Alabama is pushing to get him in Tuscaloosa for an official visit.Bama will need to miss on Sanders, but Williams is definitely a legit option
10.Happy Thanksgiving and Iron Bowl week!

I think come mid December when the deadline for early signing passes we will know not only how many spots are but also the ones currently committed they may not end up in this class if they do not(are not allowed) to sign in December.
