At what age do you start following players? -- @JuJuLewis10
Times have really changed. I got into this business in 2003... But the good thing is, I love my job today just as much as I did then — maybe more.
Over time, colleges started offering prospects at a younger age, so that really changed the way I covered recruiting. At the beginning, I covered one class at a time, and maybe a few elite juniors. Then it went to covering all four high school classes equally in a snap of the fingers.
Dylan Moses really changed recruiting. Then you had Owen Pappoe and the rest is history. When Alabama, LSU, Texas and other programs offered Moses in 2013, while he was still in middle school, it really changed the industry. It is now fairly common for freshmen to receive offers, so we cover that.
That leads us to evaluating players at a younger age, too. I am not dipping into the middle schools yet, but trust me, I hear about them. I saw Trevor Lawrence in middle school and he lived up to the hype. I start looking for talent and start following it when they get into high school.

Who do you think bama ends up with as far as final recruits? -- @Benyard33
I am not sure we don’t see some turnover with a current commit or two as well. It looks like the Crimson Tide will sign over 25 this cycle, and there are some big targets still in there.
I can’t start with anyone other than Clay Webb, the No. 1 prospect in the state. Alabama has been viewed as the favorite for some time, but Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, LSU and Tennessee are schools he continues to look at. Top offensive tackle Darnell Wright is one to keep an eye on. Tennessee may be trending a bit here, but Alabama is in this, too.
Alabama is also trending for five-star running back Trey Sanders. Florida may be the biggest competition here right now. Nakobe Dean took his official visit to Alabama over the summer and he said Alabama is recruiting him as hard as anyone. Defensive tackle Ishmael Sopsher and defensive back Daxton Hill are two five-stars that the Crimson Tide have high on their board. The feelings appear to be mutual. Hill is considered an Alabama lean, too.
All I know for certain is, Alabama is going to sign an elite class — again. Will they take that No. 1 spot back from Georgia this cycle? It wouldn’t surprise me to see the two SEC programs that played for the National Championship last season battling it out again come February.

Back to our past recruiting misses, check this catch By Justin Ross at Clemson.
They are already comparing him to their all time greats. Might have missed another Julio.

How are prospects recruited? Like what criteria are recruiters looking for?
-- Dj Misfit @175_RICH
There are so many good high school football players out there that coaches are looking for more details than ever these days. It was all about size and measurables at one time, but now it is much more about scheme, character and the fit. Years ago, coaches were not recruiting hybrids, nickel backs, slot receivers and positions like that.
It is so much more detailed now. New positions show up on recruiting boards, coaches want to see prospects in their camps more to see how they fit and it is more of a total package than just being a big young man. Speed is so important, too, and coaches love multi-sport athletes.
Academics have always been important. That will never change. Prospects are monitored on social media by every college, too. That has become a much bigger part of the recruitment process.
It is a long list now. Coaches look for size, athleticism, speed, fit, potential, attitude, maturity and, of course, academics to name a few things. There are so many for them to choose from that a top-end recruit has to stand out in many more ways than one or two to be on the boards of the best in the country.

The staff last year was somewhat very underwhelming as a whole. You had few guys that were great and the rest were nothing special which lead to most of the coaching changes.
It would be nice to have Ross but losing out a dominate DL or OL to me is a lot worse

We had plenty of space to accommodate Ross, heck we had scholly's left over. We just got out recruited that's all. Frankly I never thought he would turn out as good as they are claiming he is now.

I owe the loss of Ross as totally in the hands of the Asst Coaches that moved on late season. Did not seem that they had bought in to the program and didnt want to recruit. Like the OC and the DL coach (who are both back in the NFL) their lack of effort cost Bama mightly last season and set Bama back for seasons to come. I just wonder where Bama would be currently with all the great work being put in by the current recruiters had they not had the set back. I am one of the ones who believes that Uga will take the #1 spot again this year and will be the dog to beat again next year. I see the Uga coaches being poached after another good season in 2018-19 and some of the momentum slowing. The SEC West will continue to get better and the competition will only get heavier, so. There is a hick-up for a bit, before Bama gets back to the lead dog. Had not posted for a minute, just needed a Rant...TY for the opp

Ross and others just didn't want to be here just that simple. No body to blame. Coaches thought they were coming a day before thought they sealed the deal. Can't blame coaches for that.

LINK ]Top50 LB Henry To'oto'o discusses latest with Alabama (BamaOnLine-VIP)
4-star ILB Henry To'oto'o 6-2/230 CA hudl
To’oto’o and Tosh (a De La Salle alum) message and talk frequently: “When we went out there we talked about how De La Salle was when he was there, things they had to do. It’s pretty similar now...how hard the workouts are and just the tradition down at De La Salle... It feels good to know he's gone through the same things I’m going through right now.”
Saban also stays in touch: “He’s a really chill dude. He just wants to check up if I’m doing good and keeps me updated with the team, how they’re doing and how their practices are going. He just tells me to keep working hard and stuff like that. It feels good to keep in touch with all of them, especially Coach Saban."
On Ale Kaho coming to Bama: “Whatever is best for him... I think Alabama is a great move. It’s top-notch... It doesn’t mess with my recruitment or anything.”
To'oto'o visited Bama this summer and has said he will definitely OV at some point.
Decision timeline: “I’m willing to commit early, but I’m going to sign in February.”
To’oto’o is rated the #2 OLB and #38 player in the country per the 247Sports Composite.

Depending on what part of the country you live in many high schools will start classes either this week or next week and high school football season will kickoff the friday before Labor Day. I interested to see how many of the prospects who wanted to commit before school/prior to the season stay on track.
Anything of note in the Henry To'oto'o article on BOL?

I think Ross watching Jalen skip balls to WR's, and then watching the WR's kick dirt in frustration probably played a fairly big role in his decision.
If Tua is out there lighting up the passing game starting in November I think he is playing at UA right now.

I'll take Waddle.
And Xavier Williams, while maybe not quite as naturally talented, has turned some heads this Summer. We're loaded at WR. We'll be better than just fine there.

Tyrell Shavers (6'6") and Chadarius Townsend are pretty dang good too. Tide LOADED at WR.
Wide Receiver (10)
SR: Derek Kief*, Xavian Marks
JR: None
SO: Jerry Jeudy, DeVonta Smith, Henry Ruggs III
FR: Tyrell Shavers*, Chadarius Townsend*, Jaylen Waddle, Xavier Williams, Slade Bolden
Our TEs & RBs gotta be covered too.

Considering Hurts was better passing the ball than Bryant last season, I'm guessing that wasn't the issue.

Technically we don’t have a spot available for Ale Kaho if we would have landed Ross.
Perhaps we could have swung something, but I believe Ale took the last available 18 spot (and I don’t think we were intentionally saving one for him).
We had plenty of room for Ross at the time he committed to Clemson but I assume we would have made the same scholarship moves (juco DT and Arky QB) after he committed so we would have been out of 18 spots when Ale became available.
