LINK ]Saban pleased with Day 1 of camp but wants to see team finish (BOL)

quote:

Alabama’s first fall-camp practice has ended, and for the most part, head coach Nick Saban was pleased with what he saw on the field on Friday. However, following the start of the 12th preseason of his tenure with the Crimson Tide, Saban wants to see his players finish strong over the next 20 practices prior to the 2018 season opener against Louisville.

“I thought today’s practice was really, really good, aight,” Saban said. “But every individual, just about, out there hit their breaking point at some point in time, probably in the last 30 minutes of practice. And it was a great opportunity for us to demonstrate we weren’t nearly as good when we had individuals that did that, and that’s what we have to work so that we can sustain.

“And the discipline that will be able to come with that will help us be able to make less mental errors, and more people can focus doing on what they’re supposed to do when they’re supposed to do it the way it’s supposed to get done. Play better technique and all those things.”

Friday’s practice lasted two hours, and the players wore helmets and shorts on the Thomas-Drew Practice Fields. And again, for the most part, Alabama fielded a healthy squad with only a pair of players wearing black, no-contact jerseys and linebacker Terrell Lewis (ACL) sitting out.

It might have just been because ESPN’s cameras filled the Mal M. Moore Athletic Facilty, but Saban was in a relatively good mood, too, joking with reporters before his opening statement. And the promising start, the head coach said, stemmed from what the team did this summer.

“I thought we had a really good summer with our players,” Saban said. “This fall camp testing that we did after the summer conditioning program was one of the better results that we’ve had. I think we only had maybe 12 or 13 guys that didn’t pass the test, which is tied for the lowest out of 110 guys. That’s a pretty good count. So, I think the big question we have to ask ourselves is what are we going be in 30 days from now? What are we going to become?

“And the goal of camp, obviously, is to get every player to play and compete at the highest level with the most consistency and to be able to do that over an entire season.”

Alabama returns 12 starters from last year’s team that finished 13-1 and won the school’s 17th championship. One of those is quarterback Jalen Hurts, who led his position group in drills Friday and will compete with Tua Tagovailoa for the first-team job behind center this fall.

Saban did not field a question on the signal callers but will have another chance early Saturday.

Alabama will return to practice Saturday, Aug. 4, for its annual Fan Day practice, which is held at Bryant-Denny Stadium and open for the public to attend. Then and in the practices to come, the head coach of the Tide will look for his players to push past their breaking points.

“We’re trying to prepare our team to have a unique standard of excellence in how they compete and how they go about what they do,” Saban said. “You either endure it or you strive to succeed at it. If you endure it, you’re always going to be looking for an easy way.

“You’re always going to be looking for a shortcut. You’re not going to get where you need to be. If you try to thrive, then you’re always going to be thinking about what's next, how do I improve, what do I need to do better. Leadership on the team probably has something to do with that. I think that’s something that’s a work in progress with this group, as well.

“But I was very pleased with the first day of practice. I thought we had good carryover from the summer. We have a lot of young players that we needed to develop and improve, and today was a good opportunity for them to get started doing that.”

4-star Alabama QB commitment Paul Tyson previews senior season

quote:

Paul Tyson is completely focused on Trussville (Ala.) Hewitt-Trussville High School.

That is where the four-star quarterback wanted to be this time of year, just days before the Huskies begin camp ahead of the 2018 season. At this time last year, he was uncommitted and heading into his first year with the program and now he's a returning leader who has long been set on playing at his dream school of Alabama.

"I feel great, I can't wait to get into the season," he said on the Crimson and Blue Chips podcast. "We'll be starting on August 6, Monday, we'll start school two days later. We will go every day, after school for a few hours, really every day until the season starts -- except for weekends."

In his first year as Hewitt-Trussville's passer, Tyson threw for 3,392 yards on 238 for 336 passing (better than 70 percent) and 36 touchdowns against just four interceptions. It means expectations are high for the 6-foot-4, 217-pound prospect.

"It helps having one year behind my belt and to have the trust of my teammates and coaches to rely on me," he said. "I can help with the offense more, coaches rely on my to make calls sometimes too. I'm comfortable in the offense all around and I'm more comfortable playing the game in every different aspect."

The Huskies lost considerable production from the 2017 roster, but the rising-senior recruit has fellow blue-chipper and Alabama commitment Dazalin Worsham back for another year in addition to the new outside threat and Auburn commitment Ja'Varrius Johnson.

"Both are very, very good receivers that are held to high standards," Tyson said. "They believe, as well as I, that they're very talented guys and probably the best in the state. Two different type of receivers, Dazalin is more the taller guy who will go up and get it, very fast and athletic. But both are really fast, Ja'Varrius is probably a little bit faster on the outside. Both are outside, both make plays for us and are going to get the job done.

"It really helps me to be able to get the ball to these playmakers and get something done with the ball, it really makes it easier on me."

Despite gaudy numbers as a junior, the totals aren't a part of the goal-making process going into this year.

"For me it's all about the team goal more than the personal, I want to lead our team to a state championship," he said. "Statistics will come along the way, it doesn't affect me very much. As long as your team wins, that's what's important for us.

"We really think this thing is gonna be great this year."

Through a long offseason of camps, events and even a ticket to the Elite 11 semifinals in California, the future Crimson Tide passer worked on his lower-body to become more dynamic while at the helm.

"Over the whole spring and offseason I have been working on my feet, mobility for my size and just speed, getting a lot faster," he said. "In Fall camp, I want to work on my feet, drop-backs, staying in the pocket, getting my feet settled outside the pocket, too."

Tyson is considered the No. 13 pro-style passing prospect in the class of 2019 according to the industry-generated 247Sports Composite rankings, as the No. 323 overall senior prospect. On 247Sports, he sits a tad higher as the No. 263 overall prospect in the country, No. 7 among pro-style quarterbacks.

LINK ]Nick Saban discusses depth on defense at DB, inside 'backer (BamaOnLine)

DBs Jalyn Armour-Davis and Patrick Surtain Jr.
quote:

Earlier this summer, Nick Saban said his No. 1 concern is what Alabama has to do to rebuild its defense with only three starters returning to that side of the football.

Following Friday’s first fall-camp practice, Saban addressed the depth at a couple of positions.

First, the good news.

The six defensive backs that started the 2017 season in the Crimson Tide’s dime package are all gone, including All-American Minkah Fitzpatrick. But the secondary UA fielded to end the spring is a talented group, consisting of Trevon Diggs and Saivion Smith at cornerback, Deionte Thompson and Xavier McKinney at safety and Shyheim Carter at Star -- with Jared Mayden also working in as the six defensive back. That’s the group that will be up first in the early days of preseason camp.

But the 12th-year head coach said he is also been impressed by three true freshmen.

“That’s how we’re starting out, just how we finished spring, until somebody beats them out,” he said of Alabama’s 2018 secondary. “I’m very encouraged by the young players. I like all three young players that we have: Patrick (Surtain Jr.), , Jalyn Armour-Davis. Those guys all are really what we’re looking for at that position.

Eddie Smith is a young safety, it takes a little longer to develop at safety. So, how those guys develop will go a long way in determining what kind of depth we can develop in the back end.”

Patrick Surtain Jr., Armour-Davis and Jobe were three of Alabama’s top-six signees during the 2018 recruiting cycle, according to the 247Sports Composite, and all three flashed in the team’s summer workouts. They will be key in providing depth in the Tide’s secondary this fall.

Now, for the not-so-good news.

Alabama’s inside linebacker position is arguably the thinnest on its roster, after the offseason losses of Keith Holcombe and VanDarius Cowan, the Tide was left with six scholarship players to man the middle of its defense. Saban admitted he would’ve liked to added more.

“We have to develop the players that we have,” he said. “We tried everything we could to try to add somebody to that position. I think Mack (Wilson) and Dylan (Moses) will do extremely well. We need Markail Benton to mature and develop and not be one of those guys that’s always looking for an easy way. Joshua McMillon has got some experience and toughness.”

Mack Wilson and Dylan Moses were first through drills Friday, and that will continue. However, it will be up to McMillon, Benton, Ben Davis and a true freshman to step up behind them.

Saban also pointed to some possibilities for experimentation, although the outside linebackers don’t have a ton of experienced depth, either, after losing Terrell Lewis to an ACL setback.

Christopher Allen has been working some in there. So has Christian Miller,” Saban said. “Jaylen Moody is a young player who has to develop some confidence and knowing what to do. We’ll see how that goes. That’s kind of where it's at.”

Alabama will practice again Saturday, Aug. 4, at Bryant-Denny Stadium. The team’s annual Fan Day practice will begin at 2:30 p.m. CT and will be open for the public to attend, free of charge.

HOld up.. You can't combine the recruiting with the fall camp edition. That's confusing. I requested my spring camp info thread to be removed, and suggested that we start a new thread for 2018.

Megathreads are Mega.

This thread contains far more than recruiting. It also contains information on gay cowboys, it’s a safe space for UGA trolls, has some decent titty pics, lets us know about Sankhan booking dates when he finds a public library with wifi and houses 2nd and 26 gifs.

Good to hear Nigel Knotts name again. Hopefully he is making progress as a football player. Guy is a hell of an athlete but hasn't shown much as a footballer.
Need him this year.
