Just a little something to chew on.

Lsu lost a linebacker commit today. Some of them are now making noises about how he was processed out so yawyaw can make room for dean.

Yeah i know. They're a sad sad bunch.

LINK ]Bama signee Jordan Davis going JUCO route (BamaOnLine)

quote:

As BamaOnLine reported last month, there was some uncertainty surrounding Alabama signee Jordan Davis' eligibility after the Memphis (Tenn.) Southwind product did not enroll with the rest of the signees on Memorial Day weekend.

On Tuesday those uncertainties officially came to fruition as Davis confirmed to BOL that he is enrolled at Copiah-Lincoln Community College (Miss.). "I am the starting D-end," Davis told BOL over text message of his new school. AL.com's Michael Casagrande was the first to report Davis enrolled at Copiah-Lincoln.

The four-star defensive end was the longest-tenured commitment in the 2018 class after committing to the Crimson Tide in December of 2018. Davis was one of Alabama's top recruiters in the class. One of the Tide signees Davis worked the hardest was four-star wideout Jaylen Waddle.

Last December after former UA defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt took over at Tennessee, there was some concern that Davis may give the Volunteers a look with the new staff in place. However, the Tide commit stayed true to his original decision and signed with Alabama in the Early Signing Period.

“The communication was one,” Davis' mother, Tiffany Harmon, said of what kept them comfortable with the Tide. “The relationship with Alabama. The professionalism. Just keeping a good rapport and being consistent. I think consistency is the key with the parents for any university.

“I’m very satisfied and I am very confident in the University of Alabama. I’m very confident in the program, with Mr. (Nick) Saban, Coach (Joe) Pannunzio, Coach Tosh (Lupoi) … I’m comfortable and confident in the program and the school period. If I could add anything, I would like to add for the parents to go out on these visits with their young adults and ask the questions that maybe they’re not getting answers to, so you can get the gist of what the school is offering.”

Davis tells BOL that he plans to make his way back to Alabama in 2019 after completing his time at the junior college level. At 6-foot-5, 238 pounds, Davis was rated the No. 6 weak-side defensive end and the No. 108 overall player in the country, per the industry-generated 247Sports Composite Rankings.

With Davis enrolled at Co-Lin, that officially completes the 2018 recruiting cycle news. One of the other remaining question marks was when former four-star defensive tackle Christian Barmore would arrive on campus. He enrolled at the Capstone earlier this month.

The Tide signed the No. 6 class in the country and the No. 2 class in the SEC in 2018, according to the industry-generated 247Sports Composite Team Recruiting Rankings, which snapped a seven year run atop the recruiting standings. However, Alabama is back in pole position to restart a new streak as it has sat No. 1 in the rankings for 2019 since the beginning of May.

Note: I don't think Davis can be at Bama in 2019, as stated above, unless he meant he'll arrive in December 2019 and enroll for the 2nd term of the 2019/20 academic year (see next post).

ETA: Jordan Davis not enrolling and VanDarius Cowan's departure puts UA's 2018 roster at 83 players on scholarship.

Steve Wiltfong CBd Kayvon Thibodeaux to Bama

Thibodeaux talks recruiting at Pro Football Hall of Fame Academy (VIP, Wiltfong) -- Thibo didn't really indicate in the article that he has a leader. The article seems aimed to make all of his top-5 seem like contenders (maximum clicks), but Thibo's remarks seem to indicate it's Bama vs USC. His aspirations are NFL Hall of Fame then an entertainment industry lawyer career. USC is great for that law degree, but he could do Bama for his bachelor's degree. He gets and is high on what Bama uniquely offers and thinks very highly of Saban and Tosh.

Caveats: Wiltfong has a history of being wrong on early CB picks and then changing them. BOL insiders indicate Bama leads, but with concern that USC could win out.

ETA: Shannon Terry (CEO 247Sports) has CBd Kayvon Thibodeaux to Bama.

What Alabama is getting in new DL commit Byron Young

quote:

Alabama added a major commitment from four-star defensive lineman Byron Young last week to literally ring in the Fourth of July holiday.

The Laurel (Miss.) West Jones product announced his decision on Twitter at midnight on July 4 choosing the Crimson Tide over Georgia, Mississippi State and Ole Miss, among others.

At 6-foot-4, 279 pounds, Young is rated the No. 9 strong-side defensive end and the No. 121 overall player in the country, per the industry-generated 247Sports Composite Rankings.

The new Tide pledge’s head coach at West Jones, Scott Pierson, shed a little light into what makes Young special.

“I think he’s just so physically strong,” Pierson told BamaOnLine. “Outside of his size, his hands and his leverage and his length — all those things give him a great advantage at our level. Now, at the next level it’s going to be a little different, but at our level just the sheer power that he brings … and he’s only 17. The upside is real, real high on him.”

Young didn’t start playing football until his sophomore year of high school. Up until then he played basketball, but once he shifted his focus, it was clear he had a future on the gridiron.

“We could tell he was starting to grow into his body,” Pierson said. “Before then, he was always a big kid but he wasn’t really strong enough to move his body. Once he started to get into the weight room and develop on that end, you could see the potential. He was 6-foot-4, 250 pounds in the seventh grade. He had big feet, big hands, and big body, but he wasn’t able to really maneuver like he is now. Now it’s night and day.”

Young isn’t the type of kid that’s going to hype himself up on Twitter like we see with many recruits nowadays. As the youngest of five, Young is about as humble of a person as can be. Pair that with his work ethic, and Alabama has the makings of a special player come 2019.

“First of all he’s a ‘yes sir, no sir’ kid, and he’s a high-character kid with morals and values, which this day and age get more rare unfortunately,” Pierson said. “He’s the first one there; he’s the last one to leave. He comes up on his own time and works out. When he comes up there, he doesn’t come up by himself, he gets three or four players to come up there with him. He’s the first one in line to run sprints after practice. He’s just one of those kids — goal-oriented, driven, all the things you’d say about someone that has the ability to play at a program like Alabama.”

And while National Signing Day is months away, Pierson doesn’t foresee much drama in Young’s recruitment.

“He’s just raised a little different,” Pierson said. “He’s not going to be one of those kids that flops around and changes his mind and does the hats on the table. I think he waited a little bit longer than most thought he would, but he waited that long to make sure he knew where he wanted to go. I feel pretty strong about where he’s committed to go, I really do.”

WATCH: DL Siaki Ika footage from The Opening Finals

quote:

Salt Lake City (Utah) East defensive lineman Siaki Ika is among the biggest and best tackle prospects in the country.

At a massive 6-3, 351 pounds, Ika was the biggest defensive lineman at The Opening Finals in Dallas, Texas last week and second biggest lineman overall behind only offensive tackle Evan Neal.

Ika is just a load to deal with in the middle of the defensive line. He’s not just big, he can move well for a player his size, has good feet and projects as a player who should be a dominant run stuffer but provide a solid pass rush as well.

At The Opening Finals, Ika finished 10-10 during the one on ones but had some of the most impressive and dominant wins of any of the defensive lineman. There were times where you actually felt sorry for the opposing guard or center he went up against because of how easily Ika was able to manhandle them.

Ika is a naturally big kid but we still think if he played at say, 330 pounds, he would be scary. He would still be too big and too strong to handle one on one but the improved quickness and burst would take his game to another level.

On the recruiting recruiting front, Ika has taken one official visit, to USC at the end of June, while taking unofficial visits to Alabama, LSU, Oregon and Washington. The former BYU commit said the Cougs are still in it with him and the hometown Utah Utes are making a big push as well.

Ika said he's weighing the options of staying close to home and leaving the state.

"I think about it a lot," Ika told Brandon Huffman in Dallas. "I want to experience life outside of Utah, but at the same time, I'd want to be home and to be close to my family."

With one official visit taken and room for four more, Ika said he will take all of them.

"I haven't set any more yet but I plan on talking all of them and plan on being an early graduate and be somewhere in January," said Ika. "When the visits are done and it feels right, I'll make my decision. But it will probably come down to the last minute, with a hat ceremony and a big deal at my school."

Alabama is currently the heavy favorite in the 247Sports Crystal Ball Forecast. Eight predictions have come in and all eight are currently for Bama.

Steve Wiltfong also CBd Sav'ell Smalls to Bama
quote:

A pair of five-star Alabama Crystal Ball forecasts (VIP, Wiltfong) "Buzz around the Pro Football Hall of Fame Academy this week has been strong for Alabama and the 247Sports Composite's No. 1 ranked recruit in 2019 in defensive end  Kayvon Thibodeaux, along with the No. 3 prospect in 2020 in outside linebacker  Sav'ell Smalls..."
2020 5* OLB Sav'ell Smalls 6-4/230 WA hudl

Caveats: Wiltfong has a history of being wrong on early CB picks and then changing them. Smalls has visited Bama twice, is very high on the Tide and says distance isn't a concern; however, he also speaks highly of the Huskies.

ETA: The above article is gone now, but the CB picks remain.

So far, there has been pretty good correlation that the good luck girl posts by Cobrasize are soon followed by good news.

So, if Thibodeaux happened and the rest played out relatively to form.........

#1 - Kayvon Thibodeaux (5-star) (DE)
#5 - Darnell Wright (5-star) (OT)
#7 - Trey Sanders (5-star) (RB)
#8 - Daxton Hill (5-star) (S)
#11 - Clay Webb (5-star) (OL)
#30 - Pierce Quick (5-star) (OL)

Still very much involved with
#20 - Nakobe Dean (5-star) (LB)
#29 - Faatui Tuitele (5-star) (DT)
#33 - Henry To'oto'o (5-star) (LB)

Combined with the rest of the class being almost all Top 250 recruits

LOL that is silly. Saban is master.

We are very confident on all these guys but it seems to good to be true. I'm excited though, we have another 5 years at least of dominance

The biggest difference in this year and last year is the sheer number of those guys we are clearly in the last 2-3 on. We won't get them all, but the fact that we are so deep in on so many of them means we will at least get a few.

Those SoFla teams always tend to be nasty though.

Yea STA in Fort Lauderdale seems to churn out guys annually.

One year they had like 3 WRs going to big time power 5 programs, Jake Allen who signed at UF and their junior RB was committed to Utah at the time I think. That was just at the skill positions. Trevon Grimes was one of the WRs

I believe we will be in the driver seat for Thibs and will have to fend of a strong push from USC right before the early signing period.

With Wright:

Neal will be a 5* if he keeps it up, by the end of this cycle.

I believe the other 3 5* you included in the top group are coming and will be a little traumatized if Hill picked Oklahoma. The only Big 12 school you should go to as a DB is Texas, maybe consider TCU.

By 2020 or so Ohio State, Alabama and Georgia are going to have a very clear talent advantage over everyone else in America, with a handful of programs have elite players but not quite as much depth (Clemson for one).

It's always kind of been this way (especially with us and Ohio State), but I'll be interested to look at that 247 Talent Ranking in a few years and see what the gap is between the 3 mentioned and everyone else. I'm guessing it will be pretty large.
