I have no issue with rival fans bringing info here. It may show positive for their team but I have found most of the time you have to read between the lines when you consider 90% of the pieces posted from our writers are skewed in our favor. Meaning that many times information on our side has been left out from some interview so getting the rival write ups which do the same you can start piecing the puzzle together.
Unless the poster is like many of the LSU fans who seem to think they have a lock I see no issue with posting info from their boards. Just my one cent.

TS in regards to the one post the poster said: [
i]Pretty sure if he was recruited at all in football he counts whether he plays or not if he is on the team on some other scholarship.[/i]
If he is on the team and suits up even for just practice he counts against the numbers. If I am not mistaken if listed on the roster makes him a counter. Parks for example was never listed on the roster even though he was recruited hence why he not a counter.
Also if someone receives any type of athletic scholarship for another sport they become a counter for football the moment they suit up. Show if player A receives a full baseball scholarship the moment they suit up for the football team they count against the football scholarship even though baseball is flipping the bill.
I believe the same may hold for academic scholarships as well once he suits up.

It's possible we could sign the 26 max and then add 1-2 gray or blue shirts, no? Saban has pretty consistently done this in the past. That would get our class up to 27-28 and with such a talent rich class this cycle, it seems like a pretty logical thing to do. I expect it, honestly.
Blue or greyshirts are possibilities, but they'd be considered part of the class of 2020, not 2019. Kamaar Bell is one who seems like he might be willing to come aboard as a blue or greyshirt.

Technically this is true. However, the way the recruiting sites rank classes, the blue and gray shirts would be counted as part of the 2019 class. And you know all we really care about is class rankings as fans. We need to wrestle that #1 class away from Kirby.

You are almost 100% correct good sir!
(I said almost, only because we do really care about more than just the class rankings.)
It's pretty rare for highly rated and sought after recruits to blue or greyshirt. Fortunately for Bama, Jarez Parks was one who did.
So usually they have very little favorable impact on the class ranking. In fact, lower rated recruits actually reduce the average player rating for the class.

Getting Parks was huge. I can see him developing into a Ryan Anderson type player for us in the years to come. Kamaar Bell could end up being similar for us this year if he gray shirts. He'll end up being a pretty highly rated 4-star player before it's all said and done.

Parks is a favorite of Bama fans for sure. Bell loves Bama, but after Bama offered him, other teams are after him now too.
Also, bear in mind that any blue or grayshirts Bama takes in the 2019 cycle will use up some of 2020's 25 initial counter spots. Bullovas, Brannon and Parks were in Bama's 2017 class for the 247 Composite rankings, but in terms of NCAA 25/85 counter limits and eligibility they're in Bama's 2018 recruiting class. So are Musika and Hatcher. From the NCAA rules perspective, Bama's 2018 Recruiting Class size is now at 24, because it includes those five guys. That link is also in this thread's 1st post. Pittman is aiming to do his 5 OVs very early in the season, so he can then make his decision and commit -- likely in October.
Source: Mycah Pittman talks new Pac-12 offer and unofficial visit (247Sports-VIP)
quote:
Pittman said he plans to take all five of his official visits and has three of them locked up right now. “I have Oregon set for (Sept. 13) for the Washington game,” Pittman said. “Alabama is set for (Sept. 22) and Florida is set for (Oct. 6). I’m trying to lock in Nebraska for (Sept. 8) but that one isn’t finalized yet.
“I wanted to visit Ohio State for the TCU game but that’s at TCU so I need to figure out that date as well. I really want to commit as soon as I can so I can focus on school and football but I want my trips to be during the season so I can experience a game weekend and the atmosphere there..."

LINK ]Top100 recruit Devonta Lee talks summer plans, latest from Tide (BamaOnLine-VIP)
4-star S/WR Devonta Lee 6-2/212 (LA) hudl
Lee has an OV to ASU this weekend and may visit AU and Ole Miss this summer. He'll be at Bama's Champions Cookout June 22.
Locks wants him at WR, but Saban is thinking defense. Lee: “I can play safety, linebacker or receiver... I like defense. I’ll play both sides. I’m ready.” Lee is very "tight" with Golding (from LA) and very close with Devonta Smith (for years).
“I like the academics, the coaches, the players, the facilities, and the dorms. I like the pride and the spirit. I like the fans, they’re true fans. The tradition and the stadium, it’s so nice.”

You can keep linking that but it's been hashed out on here before and I'm pretty sure competes means on the team and recruited. I don't think there's a requirement to actually play in a game but I could be wrong. I just remember that exact thing being chopped up a lot.

WHETHER and WHEN they become counters in football varies depending on several factors:
(1) whether/how they're recruited,
(2) type of financial aid offered and received,
(3) multiple sports or not, and
(4) whether or not they compete.
I have provided more info below, including the NCAA's definition of recruited student-athlete.
The term compete means play in a game.
Multi-sport Student-Athletes and Financial Aid Limits ... - College Sports Live (PDF)
quote:
A counter who was recruited and/or offered financial aid to participate in football and who participates (practices or competes) in football and one or more sports (including basketball) shall be counted in the sport of football.
A counter who was not recruited and/or offered financial aid to participate in football and who competes in football and one or more sports (including basketball) shall be counted in the sport of football.
NCAA Bylaws (PDF)
quote:
15.02.8 Recruited Student-Athlete. For purposes of Bylaw 15, a recruited student-athlete is a student-athlete who, as a prospective student-athlete: (Adopted: 1/15/11 effective 8/1/11)
(a) Was provided an official visit to the institution’s campus;
(b) Had an arranged, in-person, off-campus encounter with a member of the institution’s coaching staff (including a coach’s arranged, in-person, off-campus encounter with the prospective student-athlete or the prospective student-athlete’s parents, relatives or legal guardians); or
(c) Was issued a National Letter of Intent or a written offer of athletically related financial aid by the institution for a regular academic term.
15.5.6.3.7 Recruited Student-Athlete, Varsity Competition. [FBS/FCS] In accordance with Bylaw 15.5.1.2, a recruited student-athlete (per Bylaw 15.02.8) receiving institutional financial aid certified as having been granted without regard in any degree to athletics ability becomes an initial counter in the first academic year in which the student-athlete competes on the varsity level. (See Bylaw 15.5.1.2.1.) (Revised: 10/27/05 effective 8/1/06, 1/15/11 effective 8/1/11)
So, according to the above NCAA Bylaws info:
(1) A football team member on a non-athletic scholarship does not become a counter until he competes in a football game.
(2) Jerrion Ealy (great in baseball and football) could be on a baseball scholarship, be a counter in baseball and practice with the football team, as long as Bama avoids those three actions that would make him a recruited student-athlete for football. But, if/when he competes in a FB game he'd then become a counter in FB instead of BB.

Five of Alabama's can't-miss targets
quote:
Nick Saban and staff have already addressed a number of needs with is current 14-commitment class, especially at the quarterback and defensive line position.
The Tide added four-star signal callers Paul Tyson and Taulia Tagovailoa in April. The position was of the utmost importance after Bama didn’t bring in an elite arm in the 2018 class — Alabama added three-star signal caller Layne Hatcher last Friday — with a thin quarterback room as it is. Tyson, a product of Hewitt-Trussville (Ala.), has seen his stock skyrocket over the course of the last year. Alabama offered in December and the rest is history as the 6-foot-4, 217-pounder committed to Bama a few short months later. Tagovailoa, a product of Alabaster (Ala.) Thompson by way of Kapolei (Hawaii), has one of the best arms in the class. The younger brother of UA quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, Taulia and Tyson will compete in the Elite 11 Finals in Los Angles this weekend.
As for defensive line, we’ve seen the Alabama staff tackle the position this spring already landing three commitments, the most notable of which is four-star defensive end Antonio Alfano. The New Jersey native will make his case over the course of the summer and his senior season for a fifth star. Alfano is one of the most athletic defensive linemen we’ve seen in some time. Along with Alfano, in-state tackle DJ Dale committed to the Tide earlier this month and figures to play nose guard at the next level with his size. Last but not least, four-star defensive lineman Rashad Cheney, a one-time Georgia commit, committed to the program in April sparking a run of recruiting momentum for the Tide.
Other positions of need Alabama has addressed thus far are offensive line and linebacker. Five-star tackle Pierce Quick and four-star tackles Amari Kight and Tanner Bowles have laid the foundation of a potential best-ever class at the position. Edge rushers Kevin Harris and King Mwikuta, along with inside ‘backer Shane Lee, are the start of what could be special linebackers class.
The rest of the current class is made up of four-star cornerback Christian Williams of Daphne, Ala., who committed to the Tide over Auburn and LSU, among others; four-star athlete Brandon Turnage who of Oxford (Miss.) who chose the Tide over hometown Ole Miss, among others; and three-star kicker Will Reichard of Hoover (Ala.) who is the Tide's most recent commitment.
With Alabama recruiting surging over the course of the last eight weeks, BamaOnLine takes a look at five of the Crimson Tide’s can’t miss targets remaining on the recruiting board.
Note: There are more than five important targets Alabama has its sights set on. This list is based off UA’s need at the position and the player’s talent level.

NAKOBE DEAN, 5-STAR LB, HORN LAKE (MISS.)
Rated the No. 1 inside linebacker and the No. 27 overall player in the country, per the industry-generated 247Sports Composite
Despite a commitment from Shane Lee, Alabama has continued after Dean, a product of Horn Lake (Miss.) And for good reason. The nation’s top-ranked inside linebacker has all the tools to succeed at the next level. Dean has visited Tuscaloosa twice this year so far and will return for an official visit on June 15.
Recently, BamaOnLine caught up with the elite linebacker:
“The mentality and the mindset you’ve got to have to go to Alabama,” Dean said of why he could see himself at Alabama. “And the competition of course. I just love competition and being around it. I know if I go to Alabama I’m going to have to compete with some of the top guys in the country. That would be a big reason why I see myself playing at Alabama.”
Alabama, along with Georgia, Auburn, LSU, Ole Miss, Stanford, and others, are competing for Dean’s signature. A decision is expected late.

quote:
ISHMAEL SOPSHER, 5-STAR DT, AMITE (LA.)
Rated the No. 1 defensive tackle and the No. 4 overall player in the country, per the industry-generated 247Sports Composite
Despite holding three commitments from defensive linemen, the position is still a must-fill spot, especially if Raekwon Davis leaves early for the NFL Draft.
Sopsher didn’t include Alabama in his top 12 last fall, which was somewhat of a surprise with the groundwork former defensive line coach Karl Dunbar laid as well as the Tide’s success in the Amite, La. area. That all has changed now as Sopsher said earlier in the spring that the Tide is back in the mix.
Some feel it’s an Alabama-LSU race. We’ll know the Bayou State’s top five on July 30 when he releases it.
“Every time I go up there to Bama, it’s a fun place to be,” Sopsher said. “Coach Saban, he’s a great guy to be around. They have tremendous coaching staff and they show it. They have great hospitality every time you come up. Really, the hospitality and seeing the players and coaches and how well they got along.
“I see a championship-winning team. I’m not trying to say anything bad about anybody else, but that’s just Alabama. They always go out and win championships. Really just the hard work and dedication that they put in. When you go up there there’s no playing around. It’s all about football.”

quote:
CLAY WEBB, 5-STAR OC, OXFORD (LA.)
Rated the No. 1 center and the No. 12 overall player in the country, per the industry-generated 247Sports Composite
While center may not be the biggest need per se in the class with Emil Ekiyor signing with the Tide in the 2018 cycle, Webb is can’t-miss prospect in terms of talent and perception.
In-state recruiting is the lifeblood of a program and it doesn’t take a genius to know that you typically want to sign the best available players in your own state when you can. Webb certainly fits that billing.
Alabama has been trending for quite some time despite Webb never naming an outright leader. The five-star lineman is also giving serious looks to Auburn and Georgia, as well as Clemson and Florida.
“Probably because I know Pierce (Quick) and I like Coach (Brent) Key,” Webb said of why he could see himself committing to the Tide in an interview with BOL earlier this month.
The Oxford (Ala.) product is expected to camp this summer, and is adamant that a decision won’t be made until the Early Signing Period.
