Alabama in good shape with top-10 DL who calls Raekwon Davis role model

Alabama in very good shape with Jaren Handy
Jaren Handy, a 4-star defensive end from Perry Central High School (New Augusta, Miss.), grew up an Alabama fan. He calls the university his dream school. Handy got his first chance to visit his dream school last weekend.
Alabama also has one of Handy’s favorite players, who is also from the state of Mississippi.
“Meeting Raekwon [Davis] was the best part from this weekend,” Handy told SEC Country. “That’s my role model. He’s the reason why I like to play defensive end. He’s also from Mississippi. We were just talking as friends, and he told me that he liked what he saw in my game.”
Davis passed on Mississippi State to sign with Alabama in the 2016 class. For many players from Mississippi, there’s lots of pressure to play for one side of the Egg Bowl rivalry between Mississippi State and Ole Miss. For Handy, Ole Miss seems to be a school that Alabama will have to battle with throughout his recruitment.
But it’s Alabama that seems to have an edge over every school right now. Auburn was his leader heading into his visit to Tuscaloosa but he now claims no favorites.

Handy realizes that he is one of those recruits who gets very excited coming off of visits. So it’s possible he doesn’t name a leader until he makes his decision, which could happen in December.
“I don’t want to change my leader every time I visit a different school, so I don’t want to name a leader,” Handy said. “Everyone is equal. This is my first time experiencing all of this, so everything is going to look pretty good.”
But expect Alabama to be one of those leading schools throughout his process. Handy said the visit exceeded his expectations — and like the nation’s No. 1 overall recruit who spoke with SEC Country on Sunday — the nation’s No. 7 strongside defensive end (247Sports composite) said he thought Alabama was going to be much different.
Lots of times, recruits label Alabama as “serious” or “all business,” which is what Handy thought it was going to be. While he saw how serious the players and coaches can be, he also said the coaching staff is easy to connect with and made him feel comfortable.

The 6-foot-5, 284-pound prospect had a chance to meet with Nick Saban who told him how much of a priority he is to the team.
“He told me that I can come in and play early,” Handy said. “He sees a lot of potential in me when watching my film. He told me that I’m quick off the ball and use my hands well. I’m also very athletic. I can put my hand in the dirt and stand up and rush the passer.
“I was excited when he said that. When you think of going to Alabama, they usually always have a lot of depth and it’s tough to play early. But Saban told me that they are losing a lot of defensive linemen, so he said I would have a chance to make a big impact.”
Handy said Alabama, Auburn, Ole Miss and likely Florida will receive official visits from him this fall. LSU, the school he was committed to for just a few weeks last month, doesn’t seem to be in the mix for him.
Handy doesn’t regret committing to the Tigers. He said he learned that he shouldn’t rush his recruitment. The main reason why he committed to LSU was because one of his close friends, Zach Edwards, pledged to the Tigers.
Auburn definitely made a good impression on Handy when he visited the school last month, but his visit to Tuscaloosa did make him back off naming the Tigers as his leader.
“Alabama is my dream school and I know I can go there and play early,” Handy said. “Just getting to know the people and the coaches at Alabama made me change my mind.
“They’re a winning program. Me getting an offer from them really means that they see me being a winner, too. They always beat people.”

New Jersey DL set to visit Alabama
Antonio Alfano, a 4-star defensive end from Colonia (N.J.) High School, was one of the most impressive recruits at The Opening New Jersey regional camp last weekend. Alfano, who measured in at 6-4 and 275 pounds, ran a 4.82-second 40-yard dash and posted a 36.6-inch vertical. Those numbers for a defensive end are eye-popping.
The nation’s No. 5 strongside defensive end will make his first visit to Alabama this weekend where he’ll stay both Friday and Saturday. Alfano will visit Georgia on Thursday. Alfano told our own Tyler Donohue of Land of 10 what he’s looking for when he takes his recruiting trips.
“I want to build that family bond,” Alfano said. “I really want to build that bond to get to know the coaches and the players to see how they like the school and how they are going to treat me in the brotherhood.”
Alfano is certainly a special athlete. He said Ole Miss, USC and UCLA are recruiting him at tight end. Other schools are recruiting him at linebacker while Alabama wants him on the defensive line.
Alabama is in good shape with numerous defensive linemen this cycle. We’ll see if Alfano gets his name added to the list after this weekend.

Imagine landing Handy, Young and Pickering from MS to bolster our DL class, and that's not even including Tuitele and Sopsher.

Sean just bought a short sleeved white button up and a black tie. He and his bicycle need your address.

Could possibly land 5 or 6 from Mississippi.

I really think Mississippi State's coach is going to have a difficult time recruiting. It's tough down South

My work actually takes me by The Watchtower headquarters a couple of times of year. Instead of them showing up at my house, I might just drop in on them just for you Cobra. See how they like it.

Word of advice for the folks that randomly visit shaggytexas. They are under new management and aren't handling it very well. If you go there, you will see things that can't be unseen

Mississippi recruiting seems to get weirder by the year. Ole Miss is already up to 15 commits while on sanctions and State looks to be struggling in the early going with an outsider HC. This might be the year to scoop up a lot of good prospects but Mississippi recruiting always makes me nervous. I will never be comfortable with it.
