National Signing Day 2019: Ranking Every 5-Star Recruit in the Class
quote:
The 2019 recruiting cycle is coming to a close next week as national signing day looms on Wednesday. The early signing period had a major effect on recruits as many took full advantage of the ability to execute their letters of intent prior to the usual deadline.
Only two of the 34 5-star recruits from 247Sports have yet to make their intentions known, meaning the blue-chipper pool has been nearly depleted. There will surely be lower-ranked prospects who emerge as stars and outperform their rankings, but these elite recruits have earned their standing to this point.
After digging into the class and studying the players, we've compiled our own ranking of the 5-star recruits. Positional value, ability to make an early impact and perceived athletic upside all factored into these rankings.
Whether their impact comes in 2019 or in future seasons, these 5-star prospects have done the work to separate themselves from the pack. The distinguished ranking doesn't come easily.

15. Jerrion Ealy, RB, Undecided
A superstar performance in the Under Armour All-America Game thrust Jerrion Ealy into the spotlight and vaulted him up our rankings. He was the best offensive playmaker in the game, showing elite quickness and home run speed. He decommitted from Ole Miss shortly afterward and is a prized free agent still on the market.

8. Evan Neal, OT, Alabama
The top offensive lineman in the class is also the largest human among the 5-stars. Evan Neal is massive at 6'7½" and 360 pounds, bringing up comparisons to former Oklahoma great Orlando Brown. The Florida product uses his size and power to swallow defenders into his gigantic frame and erase them. Neal may not see the field right away due to the Tide's depth, but Nick Saban will want him to play sooner than later.

6. Trey Sanders, RB, Alabama
A balanced back who has great power and solid speed, Trey Sanders earned the distinction of top running back on the field and through athletic testing. The Crimson Tide lost two backs to the NFL this past year, opening the opportunity for another committee approach with Sanders, Najee Harris and Brian Robinson Jr. Sanders should take over as the dominant force in this backfield in 2020.

4. Antonio Alfano, DL, Alabama
New Alabama defensive lineman Antonio Alfano already has the body and athleticism needed to be an NFL prospect at 6'4", 285 pounds and boasting a 36.6-inch vertical and 4.27 shuttle time. His quickness as an edge or interior lineman will overwhelm the majority of blockers he'll face. The Tide will integrate his talents in 2019 as they replace multiple veterans along the line.

If your conspiracy theory is true, there is plenty of time to establish a connection with a 2020 kid. He did just lose both of his Bama recruiters( Gattis and Locksley). But we also have 2 highly rated wrs committed in that class in addition to have 10+ offers out there to other receivers ranked higher than Williams.

Yeah, love his game.
It's important that we get a Polynesian ILB in this class (oh, and I guess also just good ILBs in general), so really hoping To'oto'o is on board.

The final recruiting weekend of the 2019 cycle is upon us as prospects hit the road for their last visit of the process before putting pen to paper on National Signing Day this coming Wednesday.
Alabama and Georgia appear to have the 247Sports Composite’s top two recruiting classes sewed up in that order. Down in the Lone Star State, Texas and Texas A&M are duking it out for the nation’s No. 3 class with the Longhorns currently holding the slight edge. Oklahoma rounds out the top five with a chance to pass those programs down the stretch as well.
Michigan leads the way in the Big Ten but Penn State is still in striking distance and LSU, Auburn and Tennessee are a few programs in position to dial up big finishes.
247Sports takes you around the country examining the biggest visit storylines heading into the weekend.

Rolling out the Red Carpet
Nobody is doing it bigger than LSU who currently has the country’s No. 8 class, as Ed Orgeron and his staff bring in a large group headlined by several Top247 prospects led by Amite (La.) High defensive tackle Ishmael Sopsher. The Tigers are battling Alabama and Texas A&M for Sopsher and lead on the 247Sports Crystal Ball. Sopsher’s brother Rodney Sopsher is also visiting.
Other high-profile visitors include Sopsher’s teammate, Top247 athlete Devonta Lee who is also considered an LSU lean ,along with Alabama Top247 defensive back commit Christian Williams, Alabama Top247 defensive line commit Byron Young, Top247 defensive end Charles Moore and tight end Garmon Randolph. Williams is trending towards Baton Rouge on the Crystal Ball and the Tigers will take their swing at Young and Moore. Randolph has been high on LSU the entire process while also considering Baylor late, and Soni Fonua is another defensive linemen slated to official.

3 Blue-chippers to Track
The battle for Top247 safety Nick Cross has heated up. Committed to Florida State since September, the No. 4 safety in the country hosted Penn State coach James Franklin and staff members on Thursday, then flew down to Georgia for an unofficial on Thursday night which come Friday afternoon he flies to Harrisburg to meet his parents to drive over for his official visit in State College. The Nittany Lions need Cross in the class if they’re going to pass the Wolverines for the No. 1 haul in the Big Ten and it seemed trending that way until this late curveball with Georgia. The Bulldogs have been pushing hard over the last few weeks and Cross also visited on an unofficial during the fall. Seems like that one could still go either way.
How about Top247 defensive end Khris Bogle returning to Miami for his second official to Coral Gables? Bogle committed to Alabama during the All-American Bowl on Jan. 5 but has since taken an official to Florida and now gives the Hurricanes another look. NCAA rules say a prospect can take an official to a school twice if a head coaching change occurs and that obviously happened with the Hurricanes. This weekend’s visit and the one taken back on Dec. 13 count as one. Bogle has struggled with his decision dating back to his All-American Bowl announcement where he thought he was going to Tennessee in the morning only to make the late change to the Crimson Tide. He ranks as the nation’s No. 3 weak-side defensive end.
Texas hosts four-star offensive tackle Javonne Shepherd, a longtime commit, this weekend. Shepherd is fresh off officials to Alabama and Georgia. With that being said, Texas A&M has had a lot of momentum in this recruitment and we’ll see how it finishes down the stretch. The Longhorns get the last in-person say.

USC Top247 receiver commit Puka Nacua takes his official to Oregon fresh off a mid-week trip to UCLA. He saw Washington last week and saw in-state Utah back in December. A verbal to the Trojans since June, Nacua obviously didn’t put pen to paper during the Early Signing Period and the Ducks get to state the final case.
Alabama has three Top247 official visitors including five-star running back Jerrion Ealy who has been trending Clemson on the 247Sports Crystal Ball, Florida State four-star defensive line commit Quashon Fuller and four-star defensive lineman Jaquaze Sorrells who South Carolina leads for on the 247Sports Crystal Ball.
Tennessee hosts its top remaining target this weekend in five-star offensive tackle Darnell Wright who has long been considered a Vols lean. West Virginia is the competition for Jeremy Pruitt and company who have the country’s No. 15 class. Top247 receiver George Pickens also officials to Knoxville, a long-time Auburn commit who has entertained several schools throughout the fall till now. He’s a priority for Pruitt and his staff as well.
Virginia Tech takes its swing at Top247 offensive tackle Doug Nester, who was at Penn State last weekend and Ohio State two weekends before. Nester has been a verbal to the Buckeyes since August of 2017 but PSU at the very least has made this one interesting and the Hokies have hung around as well.
Alabama running back commit Keilan Robinson takes his official to USC. Heading into the weekend it seems Robinson will stick with the Tide.

He Gone
I actually think we land Sopsher and To'tot'o next week to go along with the Young and Robinson.
Not confident in anyone else.

Pannunzio and Sunseri visited Kris Bogle again on Wed. Bogle isn't talking with the recruiting media lately.

Can a player take more than one official visit to a school? That doesn't even make sense.

If the school hires a new HC after the recruit took an OV then yes. Otherwise no.

Correct, and it doesn't count a 2nd time toward the player's limit of five OVs.

I know many thought Heimuli was a backup option for To'oto'o but who canceled the visit him or us?
Does the staff feel good about HT and canceled it?

From a Washington mod:

quote:
Heimuli has cancelled his Alabama trip (apparently he called the coaches yesterday to let them know), so this one appears to be completely sewn up for the Dawgs. I've been told he won't announce until Signing Day...we'll see if he makes it that far...
quote:
With To'oto'o, he's gone dark and isn't talking to anyone right now. I'm going with the same train of thought Brandon Huffman is in that I believe he'll wind up with Alabama, but Washington is right there too. The big pull is going to be whether or not he wants to stay on the West Coast and his relationship with Tuli Letuligasenoa. I still think Washington has a decent shot in making this guy the cherry on top of their 2019 Class Sundae, but right now, I'll stick with Alabama.
