How good is he compared to some of the other top DT's over past few years. Like Marvin Wilson,Aubrey Solomon, and that weird arse Rashaan Gary?

It's difficult for me to understand how one of Bamas "top targets" (supposedly) could be told to go elsewhere by UGA.

Something uga saw during their evaluation led them to cut ties with Cheney.

Something Bama saw during their evaluation led them to make Cheney a top target.

Looking forward to finding out who was right. Hopefully cheney will have a big sr year, and move up the rankings. I'd LOVE for a player uga turned away to be a first rounder one day.

Yea i dont know ALL of the variables involved but the article stated they just got a top DT and they are in play with a bunch of ones with big measurables. Also couple with this the fact that he decommitted from them. Then you have Bama who not needs a lot of good DTs due to a serious lack of depth.

Not hard to understand this one. Bama was trying their best last year to get a DL from the state of Alabama that they didn't even want and failed. Kirby believes he has or can sign better players and he culled this guy. Kirby is in high cotton at UGA with all the talent within his own state. Hopefully Bama can get some talent from Georgia in the coming years but Kirby runs that show NOW. Auburn should be the school that suffers in recruiting more than The King since AU depends on Metro Atlanta for great players.

Bama's new 2019 DL commit talks about his decision (al.com)
quote:

Defensive tackle Rashad Cheney spent almost a year as a Georgia commitment before re-opening his recruitment in January. Cheney closed recruiting again Thursday when he committed to Alabama, making the decision public on his mother's birthday.

Happy Bday Ma, Love ya! #RollTide

7:43 PM · Apr 5, 2018 · Atlanta, GA

Alabama's first d-line commitment in the Class of 2019, the 6-foot-3, 270-pound Cheney said Nick Saban's success of sending linemen to the NFL influenced his decision.

Alabama fans can get an up-close look at Cheney in August when his high school, Cedar Grove (Ga.), visits Hewitt-Trussville, which has two Alabama commits -- quarterback Paul Tyson and offensive lineman Pierce Quick.

A four-star prospect and ranked among the top 20 defensive line prospects in the country, Cheney spoke to AL.com for a short question-and-answer session.

Q: What made you believed Alabama was the right place for you? "The reason I chose Alabama is because I want to succeed in life, period. I think Nick Saban and the University of Alabama, I think that's the best way for me to succeed. I think I can receive the best at the University of Alabama."

Q: You clearly had offers from other schools, what made the difference for Alabama? What convinced you? "I didn't really think I was going to commit to Alabama, but after that visit I went on last Friday, they showed me a lot of love. Coaches were texting me before the visit. The visit went great. I could just see myself playing there and doing like the previous players have done."

Q: Was last weekend your first visit to Alabama? "It wasn't. It was the first time I went and was really recruited. Last year, I went to a game, but I really wasn't shown any attention."

Q: For anyone who hasn't seen you play, give us your scouting report. How would you scout yourself? "I'm not very big, but I'm quick off the ball and explosive. I can move. You can see that on my tape. I see myself being like a Jonathan Allen when I get to Alabama."

Q: Jonathan Allen is now the NFL and was a first-round draft pick and it's no secret Alabama has sent a lot of players to the NFL since Nick Saban has been there. How much of an influence did that have on your decision? "Like I was saying, previous players and how they did played a big part. I feel I can be one of those players in the next 4 or 5 years."

Q: Will you take any other visits? "I'm done. The only school I'm visiting is Alabama."

Q: Do you plan to graduate in December and enroll immediately? "That's what I'm planning on and working on right now."

Q: Do you know any of the other 2019 commits well yet? "Not yet. I think we play Pierce and Paul, I think, in the first or second game of the season this year. We've been texting, and I'm going to see them on A-Day."

Q: Social media has changed all of our lives, and I'm wondering what's been like for you today. You're a Georgia player and I'm sure some people wanted you to say in state. What's that been like? "You know, I was committed to Georgia before, so the fans, some of them, let me have it, and they're giving it to me. Some are congratulating me."

Q: Do you respond to criticism on social media? "No, I don't respond. It just makes me go harder."

Malik Langham wasn’t just some scrub to fill a spot. He’s talented. Alabama just waited too long to effectively recruit him.

Florida jumped on him later than we did. The bottom line is our 2017 staff with Pruitt and Ansley already out the door was the worst recruiting staff of the Saban era. They flubbed up so many recruits, I lost count. So glad we have the staff we do now, those guys are getting after it on the field AND on the recruiting trail.

Mullen recruited Langham for a long time (at MSU) and had a close relationship with him.

Bama has never recruited the state of Georgia well. Even when Richt was there, we basically got a handful of marginal players and most of them were massive failures. Not sure why we don't recruit better in that state, but we've won 5 nattys in 9 years with very little success in that state. Hopefully we can make some inroads with this new, young staff. That state has so much talent that UGA can't sign even half of it every year. That leaves a lot of opportunity for Bama to come in and clean up and even steal a few that UGA wants. Chaney is a legit player, and was committed for UGA for a year. I expect him to be a player for us.

There's a lot of Bama envy and hate in GA -- and pressure on top GA players to not be traitors, but instead help make UGA into an elite program like Bama. GA is like LA in that regard, but Saban's recruiting ties enable him to poach from LA.

Also, T-town is pretty far from much of GA. Even when Kirby was at UA, he had very little success poaching top players from GA. Clemson is much closer and that helps them poach a few. SC and UT are close too and able to grab some UGA doesn't want.

AU is closer to GA and has a lot of alumni and long-standing recruiting ties there. They've had more success than UA recruiting GA, but that may be diminishing for AU now with Kirby there.

Also, the Atlanta airport helps enable some top programs nation-wide to recruit out of GA too. So, there's a lot of competition for GA players.

Agreed. Although ATL to T-town is 2-2.5 hours on the interstate. I drove it last fall for a game. Not bad at all. We should be poaching at least 1-2 elite ATL metro players a year IMO. The fact that Kirby, with all his GA. ties couldn't or wouldn't is a mystery. Almost makes you wonder a bit about ole Kirby...

I think Kirby is cheating personally. Him getting that OL from Illinois raised flags.

From a try hard "insider" on BOL:

Nathan Pickering is a 5* talent but cant be trusted. Silent commit but he will mislead coaches

This guy is wrong more than right, so take this information with a huge level of skepticism.
