Even with Georgia being OK with Cheney departing its 2019 class, Alabama identified the nation’s No. 17 defensive tackle as one of its top targets.

Does not compute.

Georgia is in good shape with 4-star defensive tackle Travon Walker, who’s the nation’s No. 3 player at the position, as well as 4-star DT Jaelin Humphries and several others. His decision to de-commit from Georgia was viewed as a mutual parting of ways.

UGA already has SDE Bill Norton committed, and may not need to take as many 2019 DL as Bama. Maybe UGA only wants 3-4 DL, but UA wants 5-7. So Rashad Cheney may feel like Bama is a better opportunity for him.

Cheney says he really likes Bama's culture and I think Bama really likes his character, intangibles, etc. Also, it appears Cheney is still growing (an inch taller now at 6'3"). He's an athletic, versatile, every-down type of DL, which Bama likes a lot

Three-Point Stance: Predictions, first-round steals, new coaches

quote:

1. THROWING DARTS

Where will the top 2019 prospects at each position end up? Here are my early guesses by position.

Pro-Style Quarterback – Grant Gunnell – Bo Nix (Auburn) and Dylan Morris (Washington) are committed so Gunnell, a former Texas A&M commitment, is on the clock. He reminds me a lot of Mason Rudolph at the same stage so I’ll take a shot in the dark and say Oklahoma State lands him as a perfect fit for its offense.

Dual-Threat Quarterback – Jayden Daniels – He will stay home and play for USC, which seems to be the general consensus.

All-Purpose Running Back – Mark-Anthony Richards – Everyone is coming after him but I think Miami wins this battle.

Running Back – Devyn Ford – Tough call here between Ohio State and Virginia Tech. The Hokies really need to keep him home, but I’m not betting against Urban Meyer here.

Wide Receiver – Theo Wease – He has committed to Oklahoma once already and he ultimately ends up back with the Sooners.

Tight End – Hudson Henry – He follows his brother, Hunter, and plays for Arkansas despite a push from some others.

Offensive Tackle – Darnell Wright – There has been a lot of talk about the Vols winning this battle so I’ll go with Tennessee early here.

Offensive Guard – Evan Neal – Miami has been rumored as his leader for a long time and I don’t see anyone overtaking the ‘Canes.

Offensive Center – Clay Webb – Alabama has to be viewed as the leader at this point and that’s where he ends up.

Weakside Defensive End – Kayvon Thibodeaux – Do I think he gets out of state? Nope. He stays home and plays for USC despite the push from LSU and Alabama.

Strongside Defensive End – Zach Harrison – Harrison will stay home and play for Ohio State.

Defensive Tackle – Ishmael Sophsher – Pulling him away from LSU is going to be tough; I’ll go with the Tigers early.

Inside Linebacker – Shane Lee – He’s very quiet and hard to read but I have a gut feeling about Penn State here.

Outside Linebacker – Owen Pappoe – He almost committed to Georgia once according to sources and I can’t see him going anyplace else.

Cornerback – Derek Stingley Jr. – Another one who should stay in-state, I expect him to sign with LSU.

Safety – Daxton Hill – Many will try to steal him out of state but I’m not betting against Lincoln Riley and the in-state Sooners.

Athlete – Quavaris Crouch – Tough call early here but I’ll go with Clemson based on the way the Tigers recruit North Carolina.

So we get no one. Again.

Alabama’s top-ranked prospect has unique tie to LSU

quote:

5-star OL Clay Webb talks LSU

BUFORD, Ga. — Clay Webb has yet to visit LSU’s campus. In fact, the nation’s top-ranked center and the No. 11 overall prospect in the 2019 class, according to the 247Sports composite, has had only a small bit of communication with first-year Tigers offensive line coach James Cregg.

Webb does, however, routinely speak with LSU coach Ed Orgeron and has a much more distinct connection with the LSU football program than most elite prospects can claim.

Webb’s life coach is Broderick Taylor, the father of former LSU linebacker Kwon Alexander. Taylor serves as a mentor to the 6-foot-3, 300-pound interior lineman, which has opened his eyes to the out-of-state team in recent months.

“My life coach [Taylor] — his favorite team is LSU. His son [Alexander] attended LSU and the coaches are trying to get me over there sometime soon,” Webb told SEC Country at Nike’s The Opening Atlanta regional. “He loves it because it’s a group of nice guys and great coaches.”

That group of coaches has been working steadily toward bringing Webb to campus at some point this spring or summer.

Cregg will certainly be a factor, but for now, the onus is on Orgeron to lure the Oxford, Ala., resident to Baton Rouge. LSU’s coach has been in regular communication with the 5-star center and the whole offensive staff stopped by his high school in January, which made an impression.

“I talked to Coach O the other day. He just wanted to say hey and see how everything was going,” Webb said. “Some of the coaches came down to my school to say hey to me. They’d like for me to come down for a visit or for a game and to get to know the coaching staff a little bit better.”

Getting Webb on campus is a top priority for the LSU staff.

Alabama’s top-ranked prospect does not plan on trimming his list of schools until after his senior season, likely in December. He’ll make a decision soon after. He’s also open to leaving the state for college.

Primarily, he is putting an emphasis on the relationships he’s developing, which means a visit to LSU is essential for the Tigers to continue to capitalize on their position with Webb.

“Everything is wide open,” Webb said. “As an offensive lineman, I take into account how well I know the coaches and the other offensive linemen so I could determine whether I would be a good fit there or not. By the time football ends, I’ll narrow it down to a few [schools] and by December, I’ll have my decision.”

Sources at LSU said they believe the Tigers already have put in a good groundwork with the 5-star lineman, who has been heavily linked with Alabama.

When will LSU’s skill position targets commit?

quote:

This year, with spring official visits now an option, a lot of prospects are going to be ready to make a decision in that same time frame — between June and August during camp season — as many of these players begin to shift their attention away from recruiting and more heavily onto their final high school seasons.

Here’s a list of some of the top prospects on LSU’s board at the positions mentioned: running back, wide receiver and defensive back. Based on previous interviews with SEC Country, here is an educated guess as to when they will be ready to announce their commitments:

Running back

Noah Cain, 4-star running back: December (early signing day)
John Emery Jr., 4-star running back: December (early signing day)

Wide receiver

Trey Palmer, 4-star wide receiver: February (National Signing Day)
Devonta Lee, 4-star wide receiver: February (National Signing Day)
Jalen Curry, 4-star wide receiver: Before or during his senior season

Defensive backs

Derek Stingley Jr., 5-star cornerback: Before or during his senior season
Devin Bush, 4-star cornerback: Before or during his senior season
Erick Young, 4-star cornerback: Before or during his senior season
Bobby Wolfe, 4-star cornerback: Before or during his senior season
Chris Steele, 5-star cornerback: U.S. Army All-American Bowl
Marcus Banks, 4-star cornerback: Before his senior season
Christian Williams, 4-star cornerback: Before or during his senior season
Jamal Morris, 4-star safety: Before his senior season

I just now asked Hank if he can give us any insight on that. Hopefully he'll check some sauces before answering. Hank, Watts and Wiltfong have Bama CBs on McCollough.

ETA: Hank said there's confidence on the SC side after his visit last week, but he still thinks Bama has a "great chance" to land him.

South Carolina’s outlook at safety...
(SEC Country - SC)
quote:

With six defensive starters returning in 2018, the South Carolina Gamecocks have a number of question marks on that side of the ball — at the safety position, in particular.

Senior Steven Montac and redshirt junior Javon Charleston were the starting safeties in spring practices, but those spots could look much different by September.

“Jamyest Williams [shoulder] didn’t go through spring practice, but he’s going to play safety this season, after playing primarily at nickel as a freshman in 2017,” SEC Country’s Hale McGranahan wrote. “Jaylin Dickerson continues to battle back from his shoulder injury but looked last spring like someone who was ready to play as a freshman.”

Beyond the underclassmen, Rice graduate transfer J.T. Ibe could push for playing time at the position.

Maybe SC is "selling" McCollough easier situation for early playing time. If he chooses that over Bama, it may be for the best.

Have heard that Coach Kul loves Cheney and has wanted to sign him pretty badly since at Miami.

Also heard that it won't be Tyson (if anyone else other than Cheney commits today) that commits today. May not be anyone. Could be later in the weekend.

Breaking: Alabama lands 4-star DT (BamaOnLine)

quote:

Alabama tapped the state of Georgia for its latest commit in Rashad Cheney.

The four-star defensive tackle from Ellenwood (Ga.) Cedar Grove announced his commitment to the Crimson Tide on Thursday afternoon over schools like Florida, Georgia Tech, and Penn State, among others. Cheney is coming off an unofficial visit to Tuscaloosa last Friday, which ultimately sealed the deal for UA.

“I was planning to commit to Alabama after that visit last Friday,” Cheney told BamaOnLine. “Everything was great, I had a nice talk with Coach (Nick) Saban. He was telling me don’t believe everything that outsiders say because he played like fifteen freshmen in that championship game.

"He said I’m going to have fun. I talked to the players, they said I’m going to have fun. Then Coach Saban was talking about his vision and how he’s going to push me. I can trust Coach Saban in that he’s going to turn me into a better person on and off the field.”

Cheney’s pledge is the first for new wide receivers coach Josh Gattis who led the charge for Alabama. “Coach Gattis, he’s cool, man,” Cheney said. “We’ve got a nice connection. I had pretty good time with him.”

A one-time Georgia commit, Cheney decommitted from the Bulldogs earlier this year. He recently put out a top seven list of programs.

“My goal is to be great,” Cheney said of what pushed the Tide over others. “Not just on the field, but off the field. I feel like Alabama, I’ll be pushed to be my best. Not saying other colleges don’t do that, but Coach Saban and his staff do it the best. A lot of people are going to say my decision is dumb, but at the end of the day it’s going to pay off.”

Those close to Cheney are happy with the decision he’s made. “Everyone is proud of me,” he said. “Not everybody gets the opportunity where I’m from. My dad and my mom and everybody in my family are proud of me, telling me to keep my head up.”

Unlike many commitments these days, the recruiting process is over for Cheney with his decision on Thursday. “After this, I’m done visiting schools,” he said. “I’m going to focus on my season and focus on becoming a better player so I can be ready for that next level.”

At 6-foot-3, 270 pounds, Cheney is rated the No. 17 defensive tackle and the No. 265 overall player in the country, per the 247Sports Composite. Cheney is commitment No. 5 in the Tide’s 2019 class, ranking the program No. 9 in the nation according to the 247Sports Composite Team Recruiting rankings.
