Girls aren't taking football scholarships tho. A women's athletic program is funded by football money anyways.

LINK ]Alabama prospects impress on Day 2 of All-American Bowl (BOL | embedded video clips)

quote:

SAN ANTONIO -- Day 2 of practices at the All-American Bowl in San Antonio have wrapped up. Here's a look at how Alabama's signees and lone commit performed.

Antonio Alfano — Alfano had another impressive outing on Wednesday to follow up on his Alpha Dog performance on Tuesday. The 5-star defensive lineman was dominant at the point of attack and played with a viciousness that created a lot of issues for opposing offensive linemen. Five-star Tide signee Trey Sanders slipped past Alfano on an inside run play, which was really the only knock you could pin on the New Jersey native for the day.

Byron Young — Much, much better day for Young, who really seemed to look more comfortable in this setting as compared to Day 1. The 4-star Mississippi native was much more dominant and disruptive on the line of scrimmage.

Christian HarrisHarris, who’s playing inside linebacker for the first time ever, was able to flash his ball skills he’s developed playing other positions in his high school career. Harris picked off Grant Gunnell in the afternoon session. I caught up with North Shore head coach Jon Kay, who’s coaching the linebackers on the West team, to get his thoughts on Harris’ transition to linebacker.

“I think he’s as naturally an instinctive player as there is. He’s a soft-spoken guy, but this means something to him. You can tell coaching him that this is something he wants to do. I think he’s going to fit that scheme beautifully and obviously they know what they’re doing at Alabama. They recruited him for a reason and I think you can definitely see it this week in preparation. I think that’s exactly what they look for in an inside linebacker — he’s physical, he’s fast, but he’s a smart football IQ player. I think he’s going to need to get his feet wet and underneath him, but he certainly checks all the boxes of what they’re looking for.

Trey Sanders — I thought it was another solid showing for Sanders on Wednesday. Like we mentioned on Tuesday, it’s tough to really standout too much in these practices at running back, so we won’t get an extensive look at him until the actual game on Saturday, but again, he caught the ball out of the backfield well and showed good acceleration in the open field. He also slipped past Alfano early on in the day, which is no small feat. Also, strong towel game.

Taulia Tagovailoa — I talked to Taulia this morning and he told me he wouldn’t be playing in the All-American Bowl this Saturday as he continues to nurse his shoulder injury he sustained in the state championship last month. He did say he’ll be ok for the Polynesian Bowl in a couple of weeks, though.

LINK ]Top performers from Day 2 at the All-American Bowl (247Sports | embedded video)

quote:

SAN ANTONIO — The second day of work at the All-American Bowl was action-packed under the roof of the Alamodome. It was a two-practice day featuring some intersquad competition that included East vs. West 7on7, and OL-DL fully padded one-on-ones.

Here are the top performers from Wednesday — combining both squads — and they include some familiar names to those that read Tuesday’s recap.

QBs are addressed in a separate piece.

247 Composite ranking in parenthesis.

ALPHA DOG

As Jimbo Fisher looks to turn over his Texas A&M roster to be more capable of competing with the Alabamas of the world, LINK ]DeMarvin Leal (30) is the type of athlete he surely has in mind. The Aggie signee has been unblockable at the line of scrimmage. He was completely disruptive during team sessions and showed the versatility to shift inside to defensive tackle and even nose and bully interior offensive linemen too. I also love the way Leal works. He’s eager to compete and plays with energy that doesn’t look manufactured. He looks like as much of a sure thing as the event has to offer.

TOP 10 PERFORMERS

CB Cameron Smith
(211) - For a cornerback with length, Smith is totally reliant on his feet. That’s a great combination. The South Carolina signee trusts his feet, doesn’t panic in coverage and seemingly had a breakup every time he was tested on Wednesday.

Charles Cross (95) - There’s a ton of talent on the defensive line in San Antonio and it has been a pretty dominant group collectively but they’ve almost all met their match when they face Cross in pass protection both in 1on1s and team periods. The Mississippi State signee the best athlete among the offensive linemen and defensive linemen have felt that.

Drake Jackson (165) - Though he doesn’t have the body- ype that you’d expect out of a speed rusher, Jackson showcased some high-level get-off and bend as a pass-rusher and he also shows great hands. The USC signee has been a complete defender and makes an impact on almost every play.

Harry Miller (31) - Miller is virtually immovable. Particularly impressive was the way the Ohio State signee anchored against some of the massive defensive interior guys like Siaki Ika. He’s tough, coachable and extremely consistent.

LINK ]Antonio Alfano (28) - It wasn’t quite the same level of dominance we saw on day one but Alfano still made his presence felt. His quickness at the snap and ability to penetrate without creating running lanes makes him a really valuable line of scrimmage defender. Alfano has signed with Alabama.

LINK ]Byron Young (88) - We just saw flashes from Young on Tuesday but on Wednesday he was a consistent impact throughout. In particular it was his raw strength that popped. The Alabama signee able to long-arm offensive linemen into the quarterback in one-on-ones and blow up double teams in run drills.

Caedan Wallace (71) - One of the most athletic offensive linemen from a movement perspective, Wallace had a really good day that included one of the few times anyone has gotten the best of Alfano in the inside run drills. Wallace is a Penn State signee.

Cornelius Johnson (256) - Johnson had a good day on Tuesday but on Wednesday he took another step forward. The Michigan signee was more than just a route-runner on Wednesday but he was also finishing on plays in traffic, and asserting himself as a big-play weapon in 7on7.

Tyler Owens (197) - One of the most genetically unique prospects here, the Texas signee had a pick-six during team period but it’s really his movement skills and ball skills at nearly 6-foot-3 that really jump out. He’s an incredibly natural athlete.

Jordan Whittington (53) - A really impressive-looking prospect from a physical standpoint, Whittington excelled in 7on7 when he started picking defenses apart running underneath and crossing routes. He showed the ability to really run away from defenders after the catch. Like Owens, he’s a Longhorn.

BEST OF THE REST

There’s a level of consistency that Ohio State signee Garrett Wilson (16) brings to the table that is impressive. He has a way of playing big, particularly in the red zone, and he often seems to be the guy working himself open down the field.

Next to Cross, Oregon signee Jonah Tauanu’u (74) may be the most athletic offensive tackle here. He moves like he’s a tight end and has the toughness to deliver on a punch when needed too. He won a lot of reps Wednesday.

Penn State signee Lance Dixon (195) is one of the most athletic linebackers in San Antonio but he’s also really long and has a great frame. He showed off that length and athleticism on one play in particular when he ran with a receiver on a corner route and then ripped the ball out of his hands for an interception but he was a factor all day in the pass game.

Tennessee signee Eric Gray (171) isn’t a big, powerful back but he showed the kind of elusiveness you need as a smaller ball-carrier when he made Nolan Smith miss in the hole, spinning out of a tackle and getting to the second level. His burst and acceleration have been popping.

There was a level of consistency to cornerback Chris Steele’s (40) game on Wednesday that we liked. In the morning he was one of the top performers as a playmaker and we rarely saw him get beat over the course of the afternoon as well.

For a guy that has never played linebacker before this week, LINK ]Christian Harris (145) has adapted remarkably well. The Alabama signee plays cornerback and receiver for his high school team and has looked like one of the better linebackers in practice despite almost no experience.

There are times when USC commit Puka Nacua (217) can get overshadowed because he doesn’t have some of the flashier physical traits of some of the other All-Americans. When Nacua gets a chance to operate within the flow of the offense, though, he sure does find himself open a lot. He did that today in 7on7 and was one of the most productive receivers.

Florida State commit Nick Cross (76) has been solid all week in coverage, particularly against slot and tight end targets but he also had a flash play on Wednesday with an impressive high-point interception early in the 7on7 period.

One of the late additions to the roster, David Ugwoegbu (3-star) did even know he was coming to San Antonio until a week ago. He’s also a guy that is used to playing with his hand down in high school but is playing primarily linebacker in the Alamodome. That hasn’t stopped him from being one of the best cover defenders. He has stayed around the football and showed a lot of length and athleticism.

I could see the NCAA actually making a rule about this if it goes down that way.. it’s one thing to maybe mention your brother.. it’s another to demand a Scholarship. That actually becomes a form of payment. He might can pull it this year, but I have a feeling we will be seeing a new rule change because of it. Imagine how many boxes this could open.. sisters, cousins, friends, ect. L8U is desperate.. amazing how far they have fallen. I don’t even want the kid after reading his comments. Entitled doesnt win Titles.. or do well at Bama

Idk if such a rule is really needed because it can be worked around.

But if schools want one added to the NCAA Bylaws, it can be pretty simple: "An institution may not offer to provide financial aid to an individual with any stipulation(s) that such offer is contingent upon another individual signing an NLI or agreement with the institution for financial aid that is based in any degree on athletic ability."

It wouldn't necessarily stop it, since the parties could agree verbally. However, it would require trust from at least one side. For example: LSU could insist that Ishmael signs before they'll give Rodney his NLI to sign. And Ish could refuse to sign his NLI until LSU gives Rodney his NLI.

I have been very direct about this on many occasions, Ish is Bama. 3 months ago I said don't worry about the Rodney Jr. situation it will work itself out.
That is still the case and nothing has changed.

Read where Rodney possibly wouldn’t even qualify to get into an SEC school.

That makes it sound like Saban is going to take him for a long ride and drop him off in the woods like a stray your daughter wants to keep.

I like it.

I might be in the minority, but I believe Tyson will be the starting QB before Lia.

I get a weird feeling that both may end up playing. Having said that, I don’t think I’d bet against Beck being the eventual starter.

cant wait til A day see all the QB's showing out. Not to mention the new DLine and who will take the vacated Oline spots. Cole (from Jox) was raving about Dalcourt today when he got back from the Allstar practices. Thinks he will be the 1st (6th) interior Olineman off the bench
