Alabama makes the cut for 4-star WR

Joshua Moore, another IMG Academy prospect, hasn’t been to Tuscaloosa yet, but Alabama made his top 10 on Tuesday night. That’s somewhat significant because Moore claims 58 scholarship offers to his name.

Moore, a 4-star prospect, has told reporters before that Alabama, Ohio State and Florida State, in no order, are actually his top three schools, despite his new top schools list. It should be mentioned that some recruits change their top schools almost daily.

Still, Alabama wide receivers coach Mike Locksley has taken over Moore’s recruitment and has been in touch with the nation’s No. 15 wide receiver since being named Billy Napier’s replacement.

Fresh off his Alabama offer, Centennial, Calif., four-star quarterback Tanner McKee is set to visit Alabama on March 30.

It won't be the only visit this spring for the 6-foot-6, 220-pound McKee, ranked as the nation's No. 7 pro-style recruit in the 247Sports composite. He mentioned Auburn, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Duke, BYU, Texas, and UCLA as other schools he plans to visit.

"I don't have a leader right now," McKee said. "I like a lot of schools. Haven't narrowed it down yet. Waiting to see how these visits go."

The Alabama offer came on Feb. 28, not long after Brian Daboll was named offensive coordinator.

"I was really excited," McKee said. "Talking to Coach Nick Saban over the phone was something I will always remember. It was surreal. Knowing the kind of players Alabama recruits, it meant a lot."

The moment still resonates with McKee.

"To hear coach Saban say he thinks you are a great player and one of their top prospects is pretty wild," McKee said. "He said he couldn't wait for me and my family to come for a visit. I appreciated that."

The March 30 trip will be a campus visit. Alabama has offered several quarterbacks in the 2018 class, but a commitment from any likely won't come until Saban or Daboll has seen them throw in person.

McKee said he thinks Alabama coaches will be at Centennial's college showcase in May, when coaches can get on the road to recruit this spring.

"I'll be throwing a lot there," he said.

UCLA and Texas have offered McKee since Alabama. Auburn has not, but that could change. Auburn has a quarterback committed in this class in Jacksonville, Fla., dual-threat Joey Gatewood.

"I really don't know a lot about Auburn," McKee said. "My dad has been there and said the campus is nice, so we are stopping by after Alabama."

McKee hit 203 of 280 passes (72.5 percent) for 3,522 yards with 36 touchdowns and eight interceptions as a junior.

"(Alabama) said they loved my film, accuracy, and athleticism," McKee said. "They think I would fit in great down there."

He earned an invitation to the Elite 11 finals in Los Angeles this summer after a strong performance at the Houston Opening Regional.

It's been a busy spring for McKee, with football weight training and serving as an outside hitter on Centennial's volleyball team.

Auburn legacy and 4-star 2019 quarterback Bo Nix received a new offer Wednesday that is sure to get the attention of fans -- especially those in Alabama.

It came from the Crimson Tide.

The 6-feet-1, 180-pound Nix -- son of former Auburn quarterback great Patrick Nix -- is the No. 2 dual-threat quarterback nationally in the 247Sports rankings after a strong sophomore season at Scottsboro High (Ala.).

The 6-feet-1, 180-pound Nix passed for 1,737 yards with 16 touchdowns and four interceptions in 2016. Additionally, he rushed for 1,300 yards and 20 touchdowns -- and started at cornerback.

Patrick Nix coached son Bo at Scottsboro but was named coach at Pinson Valley (Ala.) earlier this year. Bo will play for him next season and already has enrolled there.

Box Nix has been racking up offers of late, with Ohio State and Oklahoma State among the latest to join the hunt.

That said, most think Auburn is the team to beat. Both his parents attended school there -- as does his sister now.

The 247Sports Crystal Ball is 100 percent in favor of the Tigers.

Hank South said the guy he keeps coming back to as our QB in this class is Jack Tuttle, who is currently committed to Utah.

After Hunter Renfrow caught Deshaun Watson’s pass and rolled backward into Raymond James Stadium’s end zone this past January to give Clemson its first national championship since 1981, Kendell Jones couldn’t stop the tears.

Jones, who was a 4-star defensive tackle in the Class of 2016, signed with Alabama but failed to qualify. After seeing the Crimson Tide fall to the Tigers in the national championship game, there were a lot of what-ifs that crept into his mind.

“I cried on Instagram Live in front of like 35 people,” Jones said with a laugh. “Those refs cheated my boys. I was just looking up everything in the rule book to blame it on those refs.

“I just thought to myself that I could’ve been there. I could have been the one smacking Deshaun Watson around. I did cry after the loss. I knew how much that game meant to them, but I thought to myself, ‘Dang, maybe it would have been different if I could have been out there.'”

Jones, who’s now at Copiah-Lincoln Community College (Wesson, Miss.), keeps in touch with several members of Alabama’s Class of 2016 such as defensive linemen Raekwon Davis and Quinnen Williams. Jones wishes he could be with them in Tuscaloosa now, but instead, he’s in a town of 1,925 people, according to the 2010 Census.

The 6-foot-5, 380-pound junior college prospect, who’s been in Wesson since June 5, 2016, admits that he’s disappointed in himself that he couldn’t get into Alabama, but he’s working on changing that at Copiah-Lincoln.

“This was God’s plan for me,” Jones said. “I’m growing each day. I’m maturing each day. I’m here to make a difference for myself. I want to make sure that me not qualifying won’t happen again.

“I just told myself that God put this detour in my life for a reason. Everyone in my life — my parents, my siblings, my coaches and friends — told me that I still can accomplish my goals here. This is just a year-and-a-half detour. It doesn’t matter. I’m here so I can get somewhere where I want to accomplish my goals.”

That “somewhere” is still Alabama. “Hulk,” as he’s better known as, wants to be a part of the Crimson Tide in the 2018 season. In fact, he still considers himself an Alabama commit. While he may view himself as one, the Crimson Tide still need to recruit him and offer him a scholarship again. Once Jones failed to qualify, he no longer was bound to Alabama and was free to choose any school.

He doesn’t want to choose another university, though. Fresno State, Oregon and Southern Mississippi have offered him a scholarship to be a part of their 2018 class, but he’s waiting on the Tide to give him another chance.

“The comeback is real. I’m still truly in love with Alabama,” Jones said. “Coach Saban called my coach at junior college the other day and told him how they don’t want to lose me. I’m doing everything possible to stay in my books and still working out trying to lose weight.”

His weight was an issue coming out of Shoemaker High School (Killeen, Texas). Jones said he’s working out every day and wants to lose at least 20 more pounds and play at 360 pounds. His max bench press is 500 pounds, he says, and he can bench 400 around five times in a row.

Jones said the only things to do in Wesson, Miss., are work out, run and go to class. He still hasn’t gotten used to the size of the town: “You can fit the entire campus four times at Alabama and still have space.”

But this is where life has brought him, and it’s where he’s hoping to realize his dream of playing for Saban next season.

“I’ve been with them since 11th grade,” Jones said. “Even with (former defensive line coach Bo) Davis not there, I still love that school. I want to make a difference for them. I want to play at the highest level, and Alabama is that.”

Jones is planning on making it back to Tuscaloosa this summer after June 5, which is the day he officially can be recruited. Because he’s a non-qualifier, he needs to spend a full calendar year at a junior college before he can speak with coaches face-to-face.

The nation’s No. 12 defensive tackle in the Class of 2016 will graduate from Copiah-Lincoln in December. He didn’t play football last year in order to focus on improving his grades. He did that. He finished his first semester with a 3.0 GPA.

When Jones moves to the next level, he wants to major in either broadcasting or psychology. His main goal when he gets to college is to be known as a student-athlete and not just another athlete on campus.

“When people found out I went to junior college, some people sent me hate mail and called me an embarrassment and said I was a failure,” Jones said. “The reason why I’m a failure is because I’m bound to succeed. It seems bad now, but later on when I’m out of here — God-willing — I hope I become an Academic All-American. That’s my main goal. I promised my dad that when I get to Division I, I’m getting on the Dean’s List for him.”

I wish him nothing but the best, but if he can't get down to 330-340 pounds he will never be an Alabama player.

Fields still considering Alabama

Alabama is still in search of a 2018 quarterback. Near the top of its wish list is the nation’s No. 3 dual-threat prospect, Justin Fields. The problem — like with many other of the Tide’s QB targets — Fields is committed elsewhere.

Fields, a 4-star prospect from Harrison High School (Kennesaw, Ga.), chose Penn State on Dec. 1 this past year. Fields committed to the Nittany Lions because of the academics and the offense Penn State runs. He is keeping the door open to other schools, though.

“As of now, I’m 100 percent committed to Penn State,” Fields told SEC Country. “My dad — I guess you can call him my recruiting coordinator for me — he’ll handle all of that stuff when it comes to visits and other stuff.”

The Elite 11 finalist has been in contact with Alabama offensive line coach Brent Key, who is his primary recruiter, but Fields hasn’t been to Tuscaloosa yet. Nick Saban himself offered Fields a scholarship on National Signing Day on Feb. 1.

Though Alabama has been in the race for a little more than a month now, it’s going to be tough to flip Fields.

“I don’t see anything changing, to be honest with you,” Fields said. “In reality, you never know what can happen. Coach (James) Franklin could leave. Coach (Joe) Moorhead could leave. I don’t think that’s going to happen. I’ve talked to them both about that.”

Fields, who has some family in Pennsylvania, said location isn’t a factor for the school he ends up picking. His sister — a sophomore at Harrison High — has already committed to play softball for Georgia. The Bulldogs could make things interesting. Florida is another school who could creep in the mix. The Gators also view Fields as one of their top quarterback targets in the Class of 2018.

So, where does that leave the Crimson Tide?

“Alabama is always No. 1 in the country; well, not this year. They’re always toward the top,” Fields said. “They’re one of the best programs in football. They have great prominence. I just need to figure things out.”

This is who I want as our QB for this class.

Definitely not now. I was always surprised Alabama took his commitment. But I guess they felt under the right circumstances he could trim down to 320 or so.

He would look anorexic at 320. DJ Fluker looks at Jones' frame and is in awe.

I've not heard anything either. SP from TiderInsider posted a couple weeks ago that he'd heard we were going to stop taking fewer earlier commitments. Said that the staff felt like we took too many too early, and got in a little trouble late in the process over the past couple years. (Yes, I know how that sounds after signing so many historically good classes on paper.)

?Two years after signing Arlington (Texas) Lamar offensive guard Chris Owens, Alabama has returned to the Lone Star State program with its latest offer to four-star defensive tackle Bobby Brown.

The Crimson Tide is looking to sign another strong defensive line group, and the 6-foot-4, 275-pounder is the mold of what UA has gone after at the position in recent cycles.

Other programs to have offered include Oklahoma, Texas A&M and Colorado, among a few others.

Brown was a first-team all-district selection in 2016 racking up 40 tackles, six tackles for a loss and three sacks.

The DFW-area product is rated the No. 15 defensive tackle and the No. 161 overall player in the country, per the industry-generated 247Sports Composite.
