Not getting any top players from St Thomas Aquinas they have blackballed Saban. Look for Ohio State or Florida schools for Samuel.

Welcome to SEC Country’s daily Roll Tide-ings, a rundown of everything happening in Alabama Crimson Tide recruiting with Chris Kirschner. Today, we discuss the latest with 4-star defensive end Cameron Latu and former Alabama signee Kendell Jones.

Latu focused on Alabama and Southern California

After Cameron Latu, a 4-star defensive end from Olympus High School (Salt Lake City), visited Alabama in January, he declared the Crimson Tide as his leader. That’s no longer the case— technically.

Now, Latu has Alabama paired alongside a school much closer to his home in Utah, which should be considered worrisome for the Crimson Tide when it comes to the recruitment of the nation’s No. 9 weakside defensive end.

“It’s Alabama and USC,” Latu told SEC Country’s Pete Scantlebury. “After visiting USC, they are one of my top schools as well. They are some really nice schools. I want to invest all of my time into them.”

Latu visited Southern California last month and fell in love with Los Angeles and the school. Listening to Latu speak, it sounds like he has two choices to make — leave home for a school on the other side of the country or choose a school that would be easier for his family to see him play.

He admits that he wasn’t expecting Southern California to impress him as much as it did. That’s why he’s having trouble saying one school is better than the next.

“That’s the thing, I really can’t compare them,” Latu said. “They’re both phenomenal programs. They’re both great schools. I thought Alabama was going to blow USC out of the water, to be honest. After visiting USC, that was a totally different ballgame once you go see it with your own eyes. I think USC is very great.”

The 6-foot-5, 236-pound prospect, who’s being recruited by Alabama as a JACK, which is a hybrid of defensive end and outside linebacker, sounds like he’s leaning toward staying on the West Coast. That could be because USC is the most recent school he’s visited, but listening to him talk, the Trojans seem to have the edge right now.

Latu is coming off a stellar performance at the Dallas Opening regional which saw him get invited to the prestigious final event in Oregon this summer. He said he’s hoping to make it back to Tuscaloosa this spring for one of Alabama’s practices. It’s going to depend on his rugby schedule, though. Latu just picked up rugby last year. He credits the sport for improving his tackling skills.

Utah’s No. 4 prospect said his mother wanted him to go to Alabama after visiting Tuscaloosa and for him to choose USC after visiting Los Angeles. Latu said he has his mother’s blessing whichever school he selects.

But, again, it sounds like staying closer to home is weighing on him heavily.

“I just have to think about location — if I want to leave Utah and leave my mom or just start a new life in Alabama or USC,” Latu said. “Alabama is far from home, but USC is closer to home. I also have some family in California. There are some pros and cons for both.”

Washington, Utah, BYU and Oregon are the other schools he’s considering at this time. What do those schools have in common? They’re all on the West Coast. Alabama is the outlier here. So, is it truly likely that he’ll move across the country for college?

“It’s a possibility. I just have to think about whether or not I want to leave home and blaze my own path,” he said.

Jones playing football once again

Alabama fans may remember the name Kendell “Hulk” Jones. Jones was a part of the Tide’s 2016 signing class, but he never enrolled because he failed to qualify.

After not qualifying, Jones enrolled at Copiah-Lincoln Community College. He didn’t play football last season for that school in Mississippi, but he will this season. Here he is benching 405 pounds:

Twitter Feed

Hulk, as he’s better known, was rated as the nation’s No. 12 defensive tackle in the Class of 2016 by 247Sports composite rankings. Alabama really wanted him to be a part of that year’s signing class and the staff was very disappointed he couldn’t qualify.

Though he signed with Alabama back in 2016, he is not bound to the Crimson Tide and technically has to be recruited once again. The staff is aware of Jones’ comeback but hasn’t offered him a chance to return just yet. It’s a good sign to see Jones back playing football and getting his academics right.

Alabama has offered 2019 defensive tackle Rashad Cheney of Atlanta (Ga.) Washington during his unofficial visit to Tuscaloosa on Friday, he reported on Twitter.

The 6-foot-3, 270-pounder is less than a month removed from committing to Georgia, but is making his second trip to another college campus after visiting South Carolina for Junior Day.

The Gamecocks, LSU and Tennessee are the other programs with offers extended.

Cheney has yet to receive a 247Sports ranking.

Top100 offensive tackle Max Wray out of Franklin (Tenn.) High School has decommitted from Georgia. 247Sports confirmed the decommitment with Max's father, Sam Wray, on Friday afternoon.

The decision comes after Max, along with his younger brother Jake Wray and his parents, took an unofficial visit to Alabama and spent the day with Nick Saban and the Alabama staff. Wray followed that visit up with a Friday trip to Clemson to meet with Dabo Swinney.

Currently ranked as the No. 4 offensive tackle in the country according to the 247Sports Composite rankings, Wray had been committed to Georgia since March of 2016. The decision to back off that pledge, according to his father, comes in an effort evaluate every program pursuing him to determine the best opportunity to to achieve his ultimate goal of playing offensive tackle in the NFL.

That's certainly an attainable goal to reach. The 6-foot-6, 287-pounder has already accepted an invitation to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl and he's emerged as one of the top priorities across the country at offensive line for a slew of powerhouse programs. In particular, Wray has been a personal priority for Nick Saban in recent weeks. In addition to the Alabama and Clemson visits, Wray plans to take trips to Texas, Tennessee and LSU during his spring break in two weeks.

Max is currently ranked by 247Sports Composite as the No. 55 player in the country. He has also landed offers from the likes of Oregon, Auburn, USC, Texas A&M and others.

I mean, this is all well and good, but we don't really NEED offensive tackles in this class.

Imo, you take a blue chip OT any time you can get one -- in every class. A good OT can also play other OL positions, and great OTs get drafted as juniors. Also need to have quality OT/OL depth, in case of injury.

How many years have we had a Juco tackle? Until recently we could never buy a kid coming from high school to play RT.

Alabama still hasn't replaced Fluker after 2012. Until Jonah this past season. But he's likely moving to LT.

The state of Alabama doesn't produce many great QBs.

At the college level?

Jameis Winston
Pat White
Phillip Rivers
JaMarcus Russell

And that was in about a ten or twelve year span.

I guess you missed the point of the post. Winston is the only one on your list that cycled through in the Saban era. Which was my point. There are three elite QBs from the state of Alabama since 2007. McCarron signed with Alabama. Winston left and West is set to leave. It's all about the individual circumstances, but still odd in an era of dominant recruiting by Alabama.

I saw that Coynis Miller plays some QB in high school at 290. I'm surprised he's ranked close to 300 on 247. I haven't watched much film, but he must be a hell of an athlete.
