BEAVERTON, Ore. – The first day of competition at The Opening Finals took place on Thursday with strictly the quarterbacks and wide receivers in attendance. Though the day featured the least amount of actual competition that we will see the rest of the week, there was still plenty to learn from the talented arms and pass catchers in attendance.

Alpha Dogs

Justin Fields and Jack Tuttle were on a different level than the other quarterbacks in our eyes. Tuttle, a Utah commit who continues to profess that he's solid in his verbal, was quick in his drops, accurate with his throws and delivered with big-time velocity. Every quarterback had his fair share of misses but I don't remember ever seeing Tuttle throw a duck. He just looks like he's more prepared than anyone to compete this week.

Fields was dominant in a different way. He's effortless. The former Penn State commit plays with total control of the football. He can make big throws without digging deep and he plays with a calm that is exciting for a kid that also has immense athleticism. Fields is already drawing rave reviews for his presence as a leader amongst leaders, too.

Quarterback first impressions

(listed alphabetically)

Cammon Cooper – The Washington State commit has one of the quickest releases in Oregon. He's really accurate and efficient completing passes in the short and intermediate range. He struggles some as the routes get deeper but he looks like a really good fit in Pullman.

Matt Corral – The one-time USC commit had a solid first day though he probably didn't quite make that borderline five-star tier at which Lawrence, Fields and Tuttle were operating. He was trying to generate a lot of power with his legs and that seemed to impact his consistency some on day one.

Trevor Lawrence – The nation's No. 1 quarterback absolutely looked the part throughout most of the day. There are some things Clemson commit needs to clean up that will allow him to improve on his consistency in ball placement but Lawrence looks ready to defend his No. 1 ranking this week.

Devin Leary – One of the smaller quarterbacks on hand at little over 6-foot-1, you don't expect Leary to bring a ton of arm on his throws but the dude can really rip it. He looks like he has one of the stronger arms in attendance. He continues to stay firm with his N.C. State commit.

Tanner McKee – McKee was a slow starter today and had some trouble spinning the ball consistently but as the day progressed he kept getting better. By the end of the day McKee looked like one of the more talented quarterbacks on hand.

Quincy Patterson – The Virginia Tech commit may legitimately have the highest ceiling of any quarterback in attendance. USC quarterback Sam Darnold was on hand throwing as a counselor and Patterson's delivery was very similar to Darnold in terms of the way he throws a football with power and ease. There's no loading up on big throws for Patterson.

Justin Rogers – A TCU commit, Rogers has been one of the stars of the 7on7 circuit this offseason. He looked solid again today though he still has some upper body stiffness that he'll need to work through. He's a first off the bus kind of guy with his size and arm strength.

Tyler Shough – I'm not sure anyone throws a deep ball with more touch than Shough. That was what really jumped out in day one, that deep ball and his ability to spin it consistently. Shough recently committed to North Carolina.

Dorian Thompson-Robinson – We felt like the UCLA commit had a good first day and was probably near the middle of the pack among this really talented group. He was accurate, spun the ball consistency and he always shows a lot of bounce athletically in the pocket.

Jarren Williams – We like Williams a little more every time we see him. The guy does everything well. He may not do any one thing at a rare level but he's also has no real deficiencies. During a competition period, Williams made a throw on a vertical route that was one of the better throws of the day.

Wide receiver first impressions

Jordyn Adams – I really felt like Adams was the most impressive wide receiver in this setting. It's all on air, no defenders and so the guys with fluidity and natural ball skills are the guys that stand out. In my eyes no one was more fluid and smooth than the North Carolina lean.

Kamryn Babb – One of the Elite 11 coaches came up to me after the workout and raved about Babb as a strong, physical receiver that is one of the best receivers in attendance. He's currently the No. 1 ranked WR.

JaMarr Chase – Similar to Adams, Chase is just natural. But he's also a really powerful route-runner and has great body control. I expect him to really help himself in the rankings this week. TCU and LSU are battling for his pledge.

Rondale Moore – The recent Texas commit is going to shine out here this week. He was the most explosive route-runner we saw and he looks downright scary out of the slot.

Mark Pope – In the competition period of the morning, Pope ran a go-route on the outside and his quarterback uncorked one deep. It looked like a sure overthrow but Pope just glided under it, flashing his hands at the last minute to make the catch. No one makes it look easier than the Miami commit.

Justin Shorter – Among the big-bodied wide receivers in this class – and there are a few – Shorter probably stood out the most on day one. He's just so big and fast and he has very good body control for a receiver that big. He's committed to Penn State.

Amon-Ra St. Brown – This was expected but St. Brown once again was probably the most polished route-runner we saw. The guy just understands how to operate as he gets up field. He and Babb are very similar in body type and skillset and both look ready to dominate.

I guess Justyn Ross didn't participate.

McKee has been a little disappointing so far. Just throwing a wobbly ball today. Shough throws a really pretty deep ball

BEAVERTON, Ore. — Justin Fields, the nation’s No. 1 dual-threat quarterback in the country, visited Alabama last weekend for the first time. The Crimson Tide staff made a big impression on him.

Two weeks ago, Fields told SEC Country that Alabama wasn’t strongly in the mix because of his lack of a relationship with the Crimson Tide staff. That has changed.

“I just love the way (offensive coordinator) Coach (Brian) Daboll coaches,” Fields told SEC Country at Nike’s The Opening. “Of course, they are going to contend for national championships every year. They also have most of the best players in college football. Just getting to practice with those guys every day is going to get you better.”

Fields said his father came away impressed from Nick Saban’s message to him and the family. A return trip this fall for an official visit is possible, he said. As of now, Auburn, Florida, Florida State and Georgia are still the schools believed to have the best shot at Fields.

But, the nation’s No. 2 overall quarterback said he doesn’t have anyone on top right now.

“I wish I had a leader,” Fields said with a laugh. “I have to be honest. But I don’t have any idea.”

Interestingly enough, Fields said he believes his recruitment will stretch into the fall and it’s entirely possible a decision won’t be made until he takes all five official visits, which he is trying to do as soon as he can this fall.

The good news for Alabama with its pursuit of Fields is that he feels like the Tide’s young depth chart isn’t a negative.

“I mean there are great quarterbacks there,” Fields said. “At the end of the day, I feel like I’m a good quarterback, too. It’s just going to come down to who can make plays the best.”

BEAVERTON, Ore. — Matt Corral received a meaningful picture from Alabama offensive coordinator Brian Daboll recently. It was a picture of the coach’s five Super Bowl rings with the New England Patriots.

Corral, a 5-star quarterback from Long Beach (Calif.) Poly High School, told SEC Country that his decision will definitely come down to either Alabama, Florida or Georgia.

The Crimson Tide, via Daboll, have a recruiting pitch that the other two schools can’t offer.

“Tom Brady was his guy,” Corral said. “If I want to be as good as I want to be, I’m going to learn under Coach Daboll.”

The nation’s No. 3 overall quarterback in the Class of 2018 is in an interesting spot. It is anticipated that Georgia is the favorite for Corral; however, the Bulldogs likely have 5-star quarterback Justin Fields at the top of their board. If Fields goes elsewhere, then Corral would likely be the choice for UGA.

There has been some chatter that Georgia could potentially land both Fields and Corral. But, Corral says that isn’t likely.

“I don’t think that will happen,” Corral said.

That’s not to say Corral is afraid of competition. He just doesn’t want to be in a class with another 5-star QB.

“It is not about the competition,” Corral said. “It is about what you think you can do. I like competition. That’s why I like Georgia. I like Alabama. I like Florida. Malik Zaire just got there. It is just going to make me a better person at the end of the day. So I feel like it is not that much of a factor.”

Corral said he’s expecting to visit Tuscaloosa next month for Alabama’s Champions Cookout.

Quarterback Matt Corral is among the top prospects in the country and looked good on day one at The Opening Finals.

It sounds like a broken record but in terms of his arm strength, Corral can throw it with anyone, on any level of football. The ball jumps out of his hand and he throws the deep outs on a rope.

He has very quick feet in the pocket, is a better athlete than given credit for and can can get set up and throw on balance or off-platform as well as anyone.

On the recruiting front, Corral surprised a lot of people when he de-committed from USC earlier in the month. He had been committed to the Trojans since February of 2016 but decided to open things up and is now focusing on a trio of schools in the South.

Corral is planning to take July visits to Alabama, Florida and Georgia and then make his decision sometime late in the summer. He has already been to Georgia and had a great visit and said he's very excited to check out the Tide and Gators as well.

Fields --> Our "insiders" seem to think we are the team to beat but so do everybody else's insiders. He's said before that pick is a bit of a bold one
Martin --> Honestly surprised he keeps projecting Martin to AU. I think some in AU's camp think we still hold a slight lead. FWIW I think he will end up at Bama
Ross --> We do this every year. The local 5* kid takes so many trips to AU that we get sucked into believing only for him to go Bama...
Miller --> All of AU's reporters have apparently heard we lead. I am skeptical but that has become a surprising consensus on our side. It sounds like the early PT pitch along with having Moultry has really helped

No doubt he's projecting best case scenario right now. August is going to be a very interesting month

I know Bama is signing a smaller class this year, and the 5 we have committed are really solid players. Our star rating average is great and our only 3 star is the #1 punter in the nation (I still don't understand why the best kickers never get higher than 3 stars?). So, I'm not concerned with the numbers or quality of our class right now. What I am curious about, is we typically have a 5-star stud committed right now that we can build the rest of the class around. Those guys attract other highly rated guys. Do we have a 5-star out there that might commit soon and become the recruiter or center piece of this class? Just a slow start for this class and a top player could really help things take off I think.

With Miller, I don't see how early playing is a plus on Auburn's side with all the great young DL that you all have.

Bama will likely lose their top 4 DL after this year and the players behind them are a unkown at this point.

I would think he has a better shot at early playing time at Bama then Auburn.

Really all of our D units will lose a lot after this year. Early PT at Bama should be a huge draw especially at DL and CB in this class.

Garner wants to rotate at least 10 guys a game up front. We will have 3 senior DTs and a junior when Miller arrives but with Antwuan Jackson's transfer there's not much after that

That may very well be true. I just know that after his visit for Big Cat Weekend the talking point was Garner selling on him coming in and being apart of the rotation early. No doubt ya'll are doing the same thing

FWIW I have a really hard time seeing him pick us in August. Just seen us get burned too many times at DT since Saban arrived for me to feel confident. But for whatever reason AU's camp seems to like where they stand. Very curious to see what the decision will be in August and if he even sticks to committing then

I am not one that thinks we get everyone just because we are Bama but I agree with you that August is going to tell a lot. With recruiting I think anything is possible. There are a lot of guys who seem to be visiting AU a lot so that would give the impression of them leaning that way.
