What are the chances of Arkansas getting a highly-rated nose guard and a highly-rated outside linebacker in this 2018 class? — Adam Reames via Twitter
The chances of Arkansas getting a top-notch nose guard are high. I say that based on my belief the Hogs are the favorite to sign Independence (Kan.) Community College defensive tackle Emmit Gooden. He’s taking an official visit to Fayetteville this weekend. I wouldn’t be surprised if that trip seals the deal.
Gooden has NFL potential and will likely be a 4-star recruit by the time he signs in December. Though he has several major offers — Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma and Southern Cal among them — a lot of things are working in the Razorbacks’ favor. He has a close relationship with Hogs defensive end McTelvin “Sosa” Agim, and he sees the possibility he can start alongside his buddy in 2018.
The top possibility at outside linebacker looks to be DaShaun White from North Richland Hills, Texas. He’s a high-end 3-star prospect who could potentially be a 4-star in the future. He’s visited campus and has Arkansas among his top-7 choices.
The Hogs are in the midst of re-identifying who their top targets are at outside linebacker. They’ve had to shift gears since top priorities Alston Orji (Vanderbilt) and Ayodele Adeoye (Texas), both 4-star prospects, announced their commitments elsewhere.

Takeaways from Florida State's prospect camp

NOLES PUSHING FOR LSU PLEDGE JOSEPH
Last month, LSU commit Nadab Joseph arrived at his school’s spring game sporting an FSU sweatshirt. He followed that up on Thursday by showing up on Florida State’s campus in a Florida State hat to go along with a matching FSU shirt.
There are tense moments ahead for LSU when it comes to retaining Joseph. That much is undeniable at this point. Alabama, Georgia and Florida State are all in play, but Joseph’s wardrobe and travel patterns seem to suggest FSU is real threat. Joseph didn’t work out because of a minor hip injury. Instead, he looked on from the sidelines and interacted with Seminole coaches.

NCAA RULE CHANGE IMPACTS CAMP TURNOUT
Regardless of how you feel about the new NCAA rule prohibiting colleges from employing people “close to recruits,” there’s no denying that it’s hurting on-campus prospect camps.
College staff are no long able to pay high school coaches to “work” their camp, thus removing any incentive for them to drive their top players to the event. The toll the rule is taking is obvious. This year’s June event at FSU, a camp notorious for attracting talent from all over, was noticeably light on top-flight players. The correlation is not a coincidence and people working the camp, including FSU’s own coaches, said as much.
There were headliners, including a pair of five-stars, kicking around the three-day camp. A program like Florida State will always attract star power. The lack of depth, however, was new.
This rule is so fricking stupid.

ON THE RECORD ABOUT AKERS
Florida State freshman running back Cam Akers assisted in drills and coached campers. There’s nothing really newsworthy to discuss here. I just wanted to use this as a vehicle to point out, one final time, that he should have been the No. 1 player in America last cycle and would have been if it were up to me. I just want that on the record one final time.

Asa Martin
Martin showed why schools love him so much as a running back. He has wide receiver-like hands, he can re-direct well and he has a little burst when he gets the ball too. He runs very good, crisp routes out of the backfield and he played up to his ranking.

Do you know anything about the DT from Arlington, TX? Was talking to my Longhorn buddy about him.

Florida’s 2017 class may be underwhelming as things stand now, but its future classes are coming together quite nicely.
That’s probably understating the point. In fact, it definitely is.
On top of the base of elite prospects it already has in the fold for 2019, top 2020 quarterback Harrison Bailey also seems to be high on the Gators. The Georgia-based standout isn’t much for the recruiting process and disdains the process of interviews with reporters and hard sells from coaches. For those reasons, it seems, Bailey could make a commitment sooner than later.
UF is seen as the clear favorite and nothing serves as the cornerstone to a class better than an elite quarterback.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Ishmael Sopsher may be an underclassman, but he’s not new to the recruiting process by any stretch. The five-star defensive tackle showed up at Florida State with a long list of offers from a litany of major programs.
This setting is standard at this juncture. He breezes through interviews rather effortlessly and says as little as possible in the process. Favorites? He names none. And he’s certainly not naming a leader. Instead, he’d rather talk about his time on FSU’s campus.
His takeaways are simple.
“It’s a good school,” Sopsher said. “They have good coaching. I like the city and I like the facilities.”
According to Sopsher, who has now visited Florida State twice, the relationship between him and the Seminoles is still in its infancy. That fact is never more apparent than when he’s asked who serves as his main recruiting contact at the school.
“Right now? Nobody,” he said. “But we’re starting to talk and building a relationship now.”
Florida State is certainly a player in his recruitment and may become a larger one going forward. Where he feels most comfortable for now, however, is LSU, which he’s set to visit on Saturday.
“Coach [Dennis] Johnson is a good recruiter and recruits hard. I call him often – like once a week,” Sopsher said. “We talk about football and talk about life.”
The overall theme of LSU’s pitch is simple. It’s also familiar. There isn’t much nuance in play.
“LSU is just telling me they are the home schools and making me a priority,” Sopsher said. “They want me there. They think they can put me to good use.”
RIVALS REACTION: Alabama is among the leaders to land Sopsher but LSU can’t be counted out whatsoever. His second trip to FSU signals that Florida State is making a move, but the Seminoles are still, at best, running in third place.

In less than two weeks, five-star Zamir White (Laurinburg, N.C./Scotland) is set to announce his commitment. His high school coach, Richard Bailey, joined vsporto's SEC Recruiting Buzz this week to discuss his star tailback.
"I think he's got a good idea," Bailey said. "I think he is still trying to work through the process a little bit. But he has been to all of the schools at this point. He has met all of the coaches. He has been to every place multiple times. I feel like he's at least equipped now to make the best decision for him and his family.
"He's just really tired of the process. Because you are tired of something is not necessarily the right reason to make a decision, but I do think that factors into him wanting to go ahead and get it done on his mom's birthday."
That day, June 27, is right around the corner. White is likely to have Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, North Carolina, and Ohio State hats on the table when he announces his decision. Alabama got White on campus two weeks ago.
"He had a great visit down there," Bailey said. "I was really almost thinking that Alabama was maybe not in it, and then he had a great visit. They really sold him on the idea that they use multiple backs. They have Najee Harris, but they are a school that is going to use 2-3 running backs. That is sort of traditionally what they have done.
"Obviously, they are committed to running the football at Alabama and you have a chance to win a national championship. They are always going to be a perennial favorite. You have a chance to win the Heisman Trophy and do some other great things. Definitely a school that he has looked at hard."
Listen to the full podcast below, which includes in-depth perspective on White as a player, as a person growing up, and the other programs in the mix.

He says he is announcing on November 2nd, but won't reveal his top schools.
We signed a former teammate of his in the Class of 2016, OL Chris Owens. Brown says they are extremely close.
Most of our mods have predicted him to be in our class.

We're heading into the second half of June and Alabama has only four verbal commitments for its 2018 recruiting class.
It's unusual in a number ways. First, none of the four commitments is a 5-star (though punter Skyler Long is rated No. 1 at his position).
Second, none of the four players is from in-state. This is not an especially strong year in the state of Alabama -- there is only one 5-star recruit and nine 4-stars -- but it's notable that the Crimson Tide hasn't landed at least one in-state verbal at this point.
Some would say that Alabama will clean up for the rest of the summer, landing a number of big names after camp and combine season. While that may be true, it's still notable that the Crimson Tide's class is this small in mid-June, particularly when you remember that signing day has been moved up to December this year.
And yes, Alabama will have a smaller class this year (22, according to Nick Saban) so it needs to be more selective. But 22 is not 12 or 15; it's not that much fewer than the normal number of 25.
To find out if this is truly an outlier, I went back and looked at Alabama's 10 previous signing classes under Nick Saban to see (I left out Saban's first class in 2007, which was partially recruited by Mike Shula). I used Rivals.com as a source, because 247 Sports (upon whom I usually rely) erases commitment dates from their home page after a prospect signs.
At any rate, here's what I found:
2017
Commitments by June 16: 10
Five stars: 3
Notable names committed: Najee Harris, Tua Tagovailoa, Alex Leatherwood
Additional commitments landed by Sept. 1: 5
2016
Commitments by June 16: 8
Five stars: 2
Notable names committed: Jonah Williams, Jalen Hurts
Additional commitments landed by Sept. 1: 3
2015
Commitments by June 16: 13
Five stars: 2
Notable names committed: Calvin Ridley, Minkah Fitzpatrick
Additional commitments landed by Sept. 1: 3
2014
Commitments by June 16: 5
Five stars: 1
Notable names committed: Bo Scarbrough, Shaun Dion Hamilton, JK Scott
Additional commitments by Sept. 1: 8
2013
Commitments by June 16: 15
Five stars: 2
Notable names committed: O.J. Howard, Jonathan Allen, Ardarius Stewart
Additional commitments by Sept. 1: 1
2012
Commitments by June 16: 11
Five stars: 1
Notable names committed: Reggie Ragland, Kenyan Drake, Ryan Anderson
Additional commitments by Sept. 1: 3
2011
Commitments by June 16: 11
Five stars: 1
Notable names committed: HaHa Clinton-Dix, Vinny Sunseri, D.J. Pettway
Additional commitments by Sept. 1: 3
2010
Commitments by June 16: 11
Five stars: 1
Notable names committed: Dee Milliner, Jalston Fowler
Additional commitments by Sept. 1: 7
2009
Commitments by June 16: 7
Five stars: 2
Notable names committed: D.J. Fluker, AJ McCarron, Trent Richardson
Additional commitments by Sept. 1: 4
2008
Commitments by June 16: 10
Five stars: 0
Notable names committed: Courtney Upshaw, Brad Smelley, Michael Williams
Additional commitments by Sept. 1: 7
So there you have it. Alabama has never had this few commitments by mid-June in the Saban era, and only once (2014) has it been even close. That's an interesting year to note, because it's considered one of the strong classes in recruiting history -- 5-stars Cam Robinson, Da'Shawn Hand, Tony Brown, Marlon Humphrey and Rashaan Evans would all commit either during the season or on signing day.
And the last time Alabama had zero five stars at this late date was 2008. You remember 2008, don't you?
That's the year Alabama eventually signed Julio Jones, Marcell Dareus, Dont'a Hightower, Mark Ingram, Barrett Jones, Mark Barron and Damion Square, among others. The Crimson Tide also landed 5-star recruits Tyler Love and B.J. Scott, who turned out to be not-so-good.
The lesson in all this?
Is it unusual for Alabama to have only four commitments by mid-June? Yes
Is it reason to worry that the Crimson Tide's recruiting magic has ended? Absolutely not.

Word from a few "insiders" is Zamir White's mom is pushing North Carolina hard.

That makes a ton of sense. She kept saying distance mattered and I kept wondering why he wasn't considering unc more and schools 8 hours away like Bama and OSU were in it.
