What Alabama’s 2 new, interesting offers mean for Tide recruiting | SEC Country
quote:
Alabama extends new offers just days before National Signing Day
We’re just 8 days away from National Signing Day and Alabama is still offering Class of 2018 prospects. That just goes to show you how much uncertainty there is surrounding the Tide’s class.
Alabama has 10 signees and four commitments. The Tide could potentially lose three of those commitments when next Wednesday rolls around.
To quickly recap:
4-star defensive line commitment Bobby Brown is scheduled to visit Texas A&M this weekend. Brown was once committed to the Aggies and has maintained communication with the Texas A&M staff. Brown visited Tuscaloosa earlier this month when Alabama had its championship parade. He spoke with SEC Country shortly after his visit. Here’s what he had to say about his status with the Tide: “I think that’s where I want to go. I think Alabama is the right school for me because I know I’m going to go against the best of the best every day. I know I like competition. Competing every day is what I like. I know coach [Nick] Saban is going to lay out a foundation, and I can put my brick in that foundation and be able to have my name on greatness.” I don’t think Brown flips, but he is talking to the Aggies for a reason.
4-star linebacker Quay Walker‘s commitment to Alabama remains shaky at best. I just don’t see him sticking with the Crimson Tide at this point. Saban was in Cordele, Ga., on Tuesday night. Head coaches only get one in-home visit so that will be the last face-to-face contact with Walker. Georgia assistant coaches also visited Walker on Tuesday. Auburn coach Gus Malzahn and Tennessee coach Jeremy Pruitt are expected to stop by this week, too. Walker will visit Georgia this weekend. I think Walker’s recruitment comes down to Georgia and Tennessee.
Alabama is also in danger of losing 4-star linebacker commit Vernon Jackson. Jackson will take an official visit to Texas A&M this coming weekend. He is getting pressured by people around him to stay in-state. I think the Aggies may eventually end up flipping him. Texas and TCU remain in the mix as well.

That leads us to Alabama’s offers on Tuesday to Moro Ojomo and Jaylen Moody.
Ojomo, a 3-star defensive tackle from Katy (Texas) High School, is believed to be leaning toward Texas and is expected to take an official visit to Oregon this weekend. If he doesn’t visit Tuscaloosa this weekend, I don’t see him in Alabama’s class. Ojomo’s offer is likely contingent on the Tide losing Brown to Texas A&M and Malik Langham, a 4-star defensive end from Lee High School (Huntsville, Ala.), choosing a school other than Alabama. The Tide currently lead for Langham, but he’s taking an official visit to Auburn, which was his favorite school growing up, this weekend.
Moody, a 3-star linebacker from Conway (S.C.) High School is taking an official visit to Alabama this weekend. Moody is down to Alabama, Arkansas and Ole Miss. With Jackson and Walker both looking like legitimate possibilities of going elsewhere, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Tide push for Moody when he visits this weekend.
There are a lot of moving parts going on with Alabama recruiting. It’s going to be a wild few days leading up to Signing Day.

Nicholas Petit-Frere‘s coach updates recruitment
Nicholas Petit-Frere, a 5-star offensive tackle from Berkeley Prep (Tampa, Fla.), is one of Alabama’s top overall targets in the 2018 class. He will likely choose between Alabama, Florida and Ohio State when he makes his commitment. He has also taken official visits to Michigan and Notre Dame.
“There are things at these programs that he finds very intriguing and special,” Berkeley Prep coach Dominick Ciao told SEC Country. “He’s looking to have a complete college experience, and every school has that. That’s the hard part of making this decision.
“He had a great time at Notre Dame. He had a great time at Michigan. He had a great time at Alabama. I mean, that’s really what he says. He’s got one more visit to go and he’s very excited about that.”
Heading into the final week, Ciao said Petit-Frere still has to figure out where he’s going and won’t decide on a school until he has taken everything into consideration from the recruiting process.
“He’s not sure what direction he’s leaning. He keeps it close to the vest,” Ciao said. “Very few guys I’ve coached made it through all five visits. He will do that. And when it’s time to decide, he’ll have all the information he needs. He’s about as thorough as they come.”
I’ve talked to a few people during the past few days and it seems like Florida has surged slightly ahead for Petit-Frere. If Signing Day was today, I think he’d be signing with the Gators.

BOL has an update on Vernon Jackson...
Obviously Saban used his in-home when it was thought that Jackson would sign early, so Burton Burns dropped by the kid's school in Texas recently. The dude said he couldnt talk to Coach Burns because he had a basketball game, but Burns did talk to his mom for a little bit... wtf?
He enjoyed his recent visit to Alabama and he claims his commitment is still solid, but he also says a good visit and trust in what the coaches are saying is all it would really take to change his mind.
It's almost like the situation with Quay. For whatever reason, these kids seem to be waiting on another coach to come in and sweep them away. My question is, whats the hold-up? IJS

Bad news all around. I hope I'm wrong about NSD.
Looks like Ross is the only lock for this class right now.

A week out from National Signing Day, does Jackson see himself signing with the Tide?
“Right now, yes,” he said.

Many of you complain about not having drama on NSD in years past. Now you have some, and you don't want it.
Posted on 1/31/18 at 9:11 am to CapstoneGrad06
We need good drama like in 16, when 8 players committed to the Tide on NSD.
This year looks like bad drama, where everyone goes everywhere else.
We could see there was a problem in recruiting this year for a while now. Saban has fixed that problem with the new hires, but this class might not can be saved.

Areas Tide will attack in NSD push; how positions stand for 2018
quote:
National Signing Day is now only one week away, and Alabama will look to finish strong on its 2018 recruiting class, which already consists of 15 signees from the early signing period.
“We’re very pleased and happy with the 15 players we were able to sign to Alabama today,” head coach Nick Saban said back on Dec. 20. “I think there’s a lot to do to finish this class. We can only take 23 guys this year, so we basically have eight spots left. ... We’ve identified our needs and hopefully we’ll be able to finish with a lot of good players who are left out there.”
With less than 10 slots to fill, here are some of the areas the Crimson Tide will attack the next week, as well as how those positions could look in Tuscaloosa for the 2018 football season.

Quarterback
Departing: None
Returning: Jalen Hurts, Tua Tagovailoa, Mac Jones
Signed: None
Top targets: Brevin White, Brock Purdy
Despite the success of both Hurts and Tagovailoa and no attrition -- as of yet -- at the position, Alabama will still try to sign a quarterback for 2018. Saban said as much in the early signing period, and a couple of West Coast signal callers currently top the list.
“We have tried to recruit a quarterback, and we’re going to continue to try to do that,” Saban said. “If we can get somebody that we feel can be a positive in the organization, we would like to get a quarterback. I would always like to have four on the roster. That may or may not be possible. We’ll have to make that decision based on how recruiting continues to go.”

Departing: Calvin Ridley, Robert Foster, Cam Sims
Returning: Jerry Jeudy, Henry Ruggs III, DeVonta Smith, Derek Kief, Xavian Marks, Tyrell Shavers, Chadarius Townsend
Signed: Xavier Williams, Slade Bolden
Top targets: Jaylen Waddle, Justyn Ross, Jacob Copeland
Alabama lost three wide receivers this offseason but is still in good shape at the position with its trio of soon-to-be sophomores returning after a year of contributing as freshmen. The Tide has a pair of pass-catches signed and will look to add at least a couple more on Feb. 7, with one of its top remaining targets being in-state wideout Justyn Ross (Phenix City, Ala.).
