ITS added RTR to his Instagram profile, so I guess that means he is a Bama lock.

My insider on Twitter said [Mathis is] the best player from the 2017 class.
It's extremely difficult for me to believe, in a class where a ton of guys didn't only play, but they played great, that the guy that didn't play is actually the best.

Alabama QB target Brock Purdy recaps official visit, talks where Tide stand | SEC Country
quote:
Alabama is still searching for its quarterback commitment in the 2018 class as we are now entering the final stretch before National Signing Day on Feb. 7.
Brock Purdy, a 3-star prospect from Perry High School (Gilbert, Ariz.), was hosted by the Crimson Tide this weekend for an official visit. Purdy, along with 4-star prospects James Foster and Brevin White, is 1 of 3 quarterbacks Alabama is still recruiting at this time.
Purdy took his first-ever trip to Tuscaloosa and loved everything about it.
“The trip was amazing,” Purdy told SEC Country. “Coach [Nick] Saban and his coaching staff are the real deal. They pay attention to detail on everything they do. It felt like a dream being on campus and there’s a feeling of a winning culture everywhere I went.”
The main thing Purdy was looking for going into his visit was to see if Tuscaloosa was a great college town. It exceeded his expectations.
“Everything revolves around Alabama athletics,” Purdy said. “The fan base is amazing as well. It’s a great college town.”
Purdy, who was the Gatorade Player of the Year in the state of Arizona after throwing for 57 touchdown passes, 4,410 passing yards and rushing for 1,016 yards to go along with 10 touchdowns, got to meet with new quarterbacks coach Dan Enos.
The 6-foot-1, 200-pound prospect said he got to spend a lot of time with Enos this weekend.
“He said he likes my throwing motion, footwork and decision-making,” Purdy said. “He’s very smart as a coach and a great guy.”
We’re now in the final stages of Purdy’s recruitment. He has taken official visits to Alabama, Boise State, Iowa State and UCF. He could still take one more official visit to Illinois or Texas A&M next weekend but nothing is set just yet.
Purdy said he will make his decision on National Signing Day. His top 3 is Alabama, Iowa State and UCF. As far as where Alabama stands with him, the coaching staff told him that it will accept a commitment from him if he wants in.
“Basically, they have 3 offers out and whoever commits will have the spot,” Purdy said. “Coach Saban said I would be developed as a QB if I went there.”
Alabama isn’t expected to host any other Class of 2018 quarterbacks before signing day. James Foster took his official visit to Alabama last weekend while the Tide hosted Princeton quarterback commit Brevin White this weekend.

Tony Brown played as a true freshman in 2014 while Marlon Humphrey redshirted. Those guys played the same position.
It might be hyperbole to say he's the best player. Or he could be. But he could end up being a very good player.

Tried to tell you guys in the Depth Chart Post I made that Phidarian Mathis was going to be the man. My insider on Twitter said he’s the best player from the 2017 class. Redshirted though because of Payne/Raekwon
I don't know about best player in the 2017 class, but he's been a Scout team beast. Been Scout team player of the week several times. As I've said before, our DL evaluations and recruiting, while not high on numbers, has been crazy good the past couple years. We maybe haven't landed the top 10 overall ranked guys, but all 3 in last year's class look like BOOM's, and I'd bet all 4 pure DL in this class are as well.

Wow, not even close to what the last article said. I tend to believe the last article. I doubt they are still trying to evaluate/rank but maybe they are with Enos being new.
If I had to guess though, based on prior article I would say we have it ranked:
1. White
2. Purdy
3. Foster

Maybe the staff has met and ranked since the prior article and then talked to Purdy again. Maybe they told him that in order to get his decision ASAP. Or maybe White has committed silently. Maybe Purdy even knows that and gets to keep Bama's hat on the table when he announces. Just guessing.

Drew Dearmond says we won't sign JJ or ITS...

Sounds reasonable.
I definitely don’t believe that quote though, I really doubt the staff is willing to take the first to comiit. If that were true i think Foster would have pulled the trigger.
What you’ve guessed sounds more reasonable.

Tony Brown also ended up in the doghouse and didn't work on his game like Marlon. The only reason he didn't leave early is because of himself.

Did they all play & play great though? They are certainly talented, but...
Alex Leatherwood didn’t play really until the last game, when Jonah got hurt, then he exploded on the scene..
Najee played Spot Minutes, Bo sucked in the final game, and Najee had 2 great series..
Jeudy/Smith/Ruggs played Spot Minutes behind Sims and Foster all year..
Tua played Spot Minutes behind Jalen, not blowing up until the halftime change in the final game..
Dylan Moses started twice only because of injuries..
LaBryan Ray played Spot Minutes..
Elliott Baker never played..
Vandarius Cowan never played..
Seems to me that most of the Freshmen got in late because of injuries/bad play by veterans.
Just because Daron Payne never sucked, never got hurt, never came out on 3rd down, which kept Phidarian Mathis on bench, that means Mathis isn’t as good as the other Freshmen who played behind worse/injured players?

Damn. I felt the most confident in ITS. Lol

Have a hard time believing Brown didn't work on his game...I think he was played a position that wasn't best for him. Would've been better as a safety or regular CB IMO.
