TI sources also feel that we are in a strong position to land Surtain.

QB Brock Purdy lands offer from national champs
quote:
Brock Purdy took an official visit to Boise State over the weekend. The three-star quarterback who put up huge stats in his senior season had a phenomenal time.
It looked like he was going to head back home, talk things over with his parents and he could be closing in on a decision.
Then Alabama offered on Tuesday night.
“Coach Jeff Banks did a home visit (Monday) night and apparently they have had their eye on me for a while now and coach (Nick) Saban told Banks to call me and offer me,” Purdy said.
The Gilbert (Ariz.) Perry quarterback had been planning to visit UCF this weekend but he’s still unsure on where he will take a trip in the coming days. A visit to Tuscaloosa is slated for the following weekend and Purdy is looking forward to it.
“This weekend I might be changing things up, but Alabama (Jan. 26) for sure,” Purdy said.
“Not sure where else I'll be visiting. My family and I are discussing everything still. (Jan. 26) is still ‘Bama. I'm looking for a great college town and to get to know the offensive system better. Hopefully, they have an offensive coordinator by the time I visit.”
Alabama is definitely an intriguing offer but Boise State is still a major player for Purdy, who threw for 4,405 yards with 57 touchdowns and nine picks in his senior season. He also rushed for 1,017 yards and nine scores.
Before the Crimson Tide offered, the three-star called Boise State the frontrunner.
“Boise State blew my mind,” Purdy said. “The staff made me feel like family and made everything feel like home. I'm going to go home and talk about everything with my family before I make a huge decision.”

I will be cautiously optimistic until he makes it public. I don’t know if I want this more because of our need at CB or the melt from LSU fans.

Five-star OL Clay Webb focused on building relationships
quote:
Clay Webb has been dominant at nearly every event he has attended for the last two years. It was no different at the 2018 Future 50 where he shined in the trenches once again.
The 6-foot-4, 295 pound junior offensive lineman out of Oxford (Ala.) is a top 10 prospect in 2019 and he could play up front for any school in America, but he is focused on four.
Alabama, Auburn, Clemson and Georgia are Webb's top four schools and when the time comes, he feels he choose one of those to sign with.
"I feel confident it will be one of those schools when I do make my decision," said Webb. "I will wait until after my senior season to commit, but when I do, it will be to one of those four schools."
Webb has visited each of those schools at least twice already and he plans to see each of them again the first half of 2018. Each will be important and he will be focused on one thing — getting to know the people on each campus better.
"Visits for me now will definitely be about relationships. I am just trying to improve my relationships with coaches and players and just trying to see how I fit in the spectrum of things.
"Players and coaches do come and go, but I want to see who I get along with, where I fit in best at and things like that. That will be the main thing I look for moving forward."
The school that made the biggest move during the season was Auburn. He took in a couple of games there and the environment put the Tigers in his top four.
"The atmosphere at Auburn really stands out to me. It is just about how it feels for me there. It feels a lot like home and I really like it a lot."
Alabama has a similar feel. Webb has visited Tuscaloosa more than anywhere and he has a good feel for what the Tide is all about.
"Alabama is just a great program," said Webb. "They know how to win, they work really hard and coach Nick Saban has done a great job there."
Clemson and Georgia are going to do all they can do to convince Webb to leave his home state. Each school has impressed him on previous visits and he has connected well with the people there.
"Clemson has good people and I fit in well there. I like the coaches a lot, the players are great and the atmosphere feels it fits me.
"I feel the same about Georgia. I think Georgia did some really good things in year two under coach [Kirby] Smart. I really like the offensive line coach (Sam Pittman) and offensive coordinator (Jim Chaney) a lot. Those coaches are good guys and they are part of the reason I like Georgia so much."
Webb made it clear that there is no order at this time. All four schools are on a level playing field and he said he will chose the one he feels is right for him when that time comes.
"I could go to any of those schools and be happy," said Webb. "I do not feel pressure to stay in Alabama. I do not even think about that. I will go to the school I feel fits me the best."

If Purdy was impressed with the visit to BSU,
he'll be blown away when he visits TitleTown.

We apparently offered 4 star safety Julius Irvin out of California today. He's class of 2018.

If we close with ITS, Surtain and Petit-Frere along with the others we are expected to sign, that may be a top 3 class with four 5-stars. That would be an insane finish.

Interesting. Seems we are short on space to still be slinging offers, but what do I know?

The latest with Alabama, Hugh Freeze, and the coaching staff
Last Monday, Alabama won a national title. Since that time it’s been fast-paced and a little hectic inside the Mal Moore Building, which houses the football offices. In other words, Nick Saban has not been content to bask in the afterglow of the title. It’s quite the opposite actually. Saban has been driven since that time, interviewing and meeting with coach after coach after coach as he remakes the Alabama coaching staff. Here is the latest.
Freeze attack
Earlier this week, I reported that former Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze had been in Tuscaloosa and at UA to meet with Saban. Saban respects Freeze’s offensive mind, and given the fact Ole Miss gave Alabama fits during Freeze’s tenure it’s easy to see why. So what would Freeze’s role be if Saban hired him? It’s a great question and one that, as of Tuesday morning, hadn’t been settled upon yet. Saban is really pushing for Freeze to be an on-the-field coach, The Tuscaloosa News has learned. Others in the program don’t want that happening. How much autonomy Saban has in this particular situation is unknown given Freeze’s recent history with the NCAA. Another aspect to this is that should Alabama decided to hire Freeze as an on-the-field coach, it would likely need the blessing of SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey. Sankey isn’t keen on that happening, The Tuscaloosa News has learned. At the moment, Mike Locksley appears to be in good position to land the offensive coordinator job, but nothing is certain. Normally the offensive coordinator works with the quarterbacks. Locksley is currently the wide receivers coach. As you can see, there are lots of moving parts at the moment and that speaks to how much Saban wants to or is open to shaking up the staff. Chris Weinke could be a candidate to coach wide receivers or quarterbacks should he get an on-the-field position. Freeze could do either, too, if he gets the nod. Freeze could also end up as an analyst, which is what most people are speculating as the most likely result. Again, right now things are moving quickly and nothing is decided.

Highly doubt that. Surtain will be a LSU Tiger, unless a certain coach leaves LSU.

More moves
Tight ends/special teams coach Joe Pannunzio will be moving to an off-the-field position, The Tuscaloosa News has learned. Pannunzio has been out on the recruiting trail this week, but I’m told this move is going to happen. Alabama has hired former Texas A&M coach Jeff Banks to be the special teams coach. Karl Scott, an assistant coach at Louisiana-Lafayette, has interviewed for a position on the defense. (AL.com was first to report this Tuesday morning). That hire is not official as of the moment, but it could be at some point during the day.

Shaking it up
As I previously reported, Saban wasn’t content to go into another season with the status quo. Recruiting is driving most of these decisions. Saban wants assistant coaches who will work hard to continue to bring the best talent in the country to Tuscaloosa. With recent SEC coaching changes, the competition for that talent is getting cutthroat. This is one of the most tumultuous offseasons I can remember during the Saban era in terms of the coaching staff. It’s moving fast and furious. And it’s not over yet.
