Is Phidarian Mathis the one recruit no one is really talking about who ends up at Alabama?

(From @RollTideRichard)

Absolutely.

The reason for that is because Mathis, a 4-star defensive tackle from Neville High School (Monroe, La.), is very quiet when it comes to talking about where things stand in his recruitment.

I caught up with Mathis last week, and I came away with the impression that Alabama should be considered the team to beat for his commitment.

Both Karl Dunbar and wide receivers coach Billy Napier keep in contact with Mathis every single day. That tells you how big of a priority he is for the team.

He also feels like Alabama is recruiting him the hardest. That matters because recruits always want to feel like they are a priority to the schools they are considering.

Mathis also knows the depth chart for next season is favorable for a freshman to get playing time.

“They always tell me that they’re going to need a lot of defensive linemen next year because most of those guys up front are leaving this year,” Mathis said. “They are telling me that I can come in and make a big impact immediately.”

He’s quick to admit that early playing time is a major factor in his recruitment. Because of that, he says, Alabama has a great chance at landing his commitment when he’s likely to announce his decision in December or January.

LaBryan Ray's all-American journey is set to come full circle.

The James Clemens senior, four-star defensive end received his Under Armour All-America Game jersey today, eight months after he became a recruiting sensation for his performance at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl National Combine.

The Under Armour game is Jan. 1 in Orlando and will give Ray - the state's No. 1 recruit for 2017 - another chance to shine against top-tier competition.

"It motivated me a lot," Ray said of the Army combine experience. "It's definitely something that I learned from. I learned to work even harder from that. At every camp, you're seeing great players. You have to come there with the best you've got. You've got to work your hardest so that you can succeed against those guys."

The 6-foot-4, 255-pound Ray had offers from the likes of Louisville, Kentucky and N.C. State before the combine. Now his top six is an all-SEC group of Alabama, Auburn, Tennessee, Mississippi State, Florida and Ole Miss. Ray said he plans to attend the LSU at Florida game Oct. 8.

Ray reiterated that he doesn't have a commitment date in mind, though he did flash a smile when asked about the possibility of committing at the Under Armour game.

"I don't know," he said with a laugh. "Maybe. I'm going to take a couple of officials in December and January, and I'll probably decide after that."

National Signing Day is Feb. 1, 2017.

Ray's highlights this season include a 17-tackle performance against Sparkman, and blocking a punt that he returned for a touchdown against Gadsden City. As a junior, Ray recorded 113 tackles, 20 tackles for a loss, 12 sacks and three forced fumbles en route to being named Class 7A Lineman of the Year.

"It's a great feeling," Ray said of his Under Armour selection. "Growing up, this was one of my dreams; something I really wanted. I've been watching it every year, seeing players like Julio Jones and one other player from Madison, Reggie Ragland. I'm glad I got to accomplish this."

Is he down to 255? That's the same weight as Jarez Parks.

Bainbridge (Ga.) may have lost to Rickards 36-34 on Friday night, but it was the Bearcats who had the best player on the field as 2018 Bama running back commit Dameon Pierce rushed for 330 yards on 50 carries, finding the end zone four times.

According to Powell Cobb of The Post-Searchlight, the performance breaks the school record for most rushing yards in a game (270), a mark that's been held since 1983.

Bainbridge is 1-4 on the season, Pierce only playing in four of those games after nursing an ankle sprain at the beginning of the season. In the action Pierce has seen this year, he's rushed for 691 yards and seven touchdowns, for an average of 172 yards per game.

At 5-foot-11, 205 pounds, Pierce has certainly earned his ranking as the No. 4 running back in the country and the No. 50 overall player, per the industry-generated 247Sports Composite.

I agree. They need to do something about that at the HS level. Same way they protect pitchers.

Interesting that it came on the weekend that Beal is OVing. Maybe just a coincidence, though.
