I just browsed through Neibuhr's War Damn BBQ notebook and it is amazing to me that we are really not going head to head with Auburn for anyone this year.

Ryan Johnson is a Bama/Auburn battle. One that Bama might lose.

The reports were wrong all along. Saban was never going to Texas....It was Tallahassee.

Hank said Randolph is still in play. If it came down to a numbers issue he wouldn't be surprised to see Brannon Greyshirt.

There is Rivals article stating that WR Mark Webb says Bama and UGA leads for him but Ive never heard much about him in regards to Bama.

Webb was mentioned early on by Bone as being one he thought would be in the class.......then it got quiet and he was rarely if ever mentioned. Interesting with the latest from Ruggs, who knows what's going on in the WR class. Just hope it doesn't go like last year.

Yeah Ruggs wanting to delay his decision is interesting, although it could be completely unrelated to one another.

According to Hank, Webb is a take. He says Webb is one to watch but still thinks he end up at UGA, especially if Swift goes there which is probably expected.

Why Alabama has nothing to worry about with Devonta Smith

Devonta Smith, a 4-star wide receiver from Amite (La.) High School, changed up his list of finalists Saturday night. He will choose from Alabama, Miami and now LSU, eliminating both Nebraska and Mississippi State.

The elimination of Nebraska and Mississippi State really isn’t huge news because there was a zero percent chance of him attending either school. The inclusion of LSU is interesting though.

Smith visited LSU this weekend for the team’s barbecue, and shortly after the event ended, he announced the Tigers were back in the mix.

Here’s what he told SEC Country at The Opening, Nike’s premier summer football camp, two weeks ago on why his home state Tigers were not a finalist.

“I just really want to get away from home,” Smith said. “I don’t really like being in Louisiana that much. I want to get away from home so I can explore other things.”

He has also said multiple times in the past he doesn’t like LSU’s offense and he has picked up from multiple visits that the Tigers won’t be opening up the offense in the passing game. Would you if Leonard Fournette was your running back?

So after all of that, why is LSU suddenly in the mix? Smith didn’t answer SEC Country’s request for an interview this weekend, but I believe this move is nothing to be concerned about.

On the day he de-committed from Georgia back in January, Alabama was considered the favorite to land him. Why?

He’s very close with Crimson Tide freshman cornerback Shyheim Carter, who lived less than 30 minutes away from Smith in Louisiana. Carter showed up to the Opening regional camp in New Orleans in April to cheer on Smith as he competed.
Alabama defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt was one of the primary recruiters for Smith when he was at Georgia. Smith has said he is fond of Pruitt.
More importantly, less than 30 minutes after it was announced that Sam Petitto was leaving Georgia for Alabama to be the team’s assistant director of player personnel, Smith de-committed from the Bulldogs. Petitto has been in Smith’s life for years now. Petitto got his start in coaching at Amite High School and was a father figure to both Smith and Carter when they were growing up.

At this time, there is nothing to worry about. Several Alabama commits feel strongly that he’s going to join them Aug. 15, which is the day he announces his commitment. It would be shocking if one trip to Baton Rouge for a barbecue dramatically altered his mindset about wanting to leave the state for school.

Ruggs delays his decision

This was sort of a surprise.

Henry Ruggs III, a 4-star wide receiver from Robert E. Lee High School (Montgomery, Ala.), told SEC Country he’s no longer announcing his commitment on Aug. 1. Why does that matter? Well, barring something drastic, he was likely going to choose Alabama.

Ruggs does not know when he’s going to announce his commitment now, but he previously said he wants to get it done before his senior season begins. He’s pretty new to the recruiting game because he was mainly a basketball player until his junior year. His football coach at Lee saw how athletic he was on the court and thought he would have a future in this sport. Ruggs has posted a 40-plus inch vertical and has been timed in the mid 4.4s in the 40-yard dash. He’s one of the most athletic receivers in the Class of 2017.

The 6-foot, 175-pound prospect has been one of Alabama’s main targets at wide receiver, but he’s coming off of trips to Penn State and Auburn. The reason for the delay centers around his desire to visit a few more schools once again before announcing his commitment. He wouldn’t say which schools he wanted to see again.

Like Smith, I still fully expect Ruggs in Alabama’s class when he does choose to announce his decision and so do multiple Crimson Tide commits. If there was going to be some concern, it’s too early to start sounding alarms.

How does Hunter Brannon’s recruitment affect the OL board?

In short, it doesn’t.

Hunter Brannon, a 3-star offensive guard from Cullman (Ala.) High School, committed on the spot after receiving an offer from Alabama, his dream school, on Saturday.

I had a lot of people ask me why Alabama went after Brannon with so many higher-rated prospects still on the board. It’s because his commitment doesn’t affect any of the top guys. Brannon is likely going to play center for Alabama, so the only guy it “affects” is Cesar Ruiz, the nation’s No. 1-rated center from IMG Academy. If you’ve been reading SEC Country for the past several weeks, you know that Ruiz did not have a committable offer, despite him naming Alabama his leader at The Opening. The staff likes its centers to be combo offensive linemen and not just strictly a center.

Alabama now has three commitments from offensive linemen: 5-star tackle Alex Leatherwood, the nation’s No. 1 junior college tackle Elliot Baker and now Brannon. The Crimson Tide will likely add Kendall Randolph, a 4-star offensive guard from Bob Jones High School (Madison, Ala.), on Aug. 2 (his commitment date) and is in good position for Wilson (mentioned above), 4-star tackle Jedrick Wills from Lexington, Ky., and 4-star tackle Trey Smith from Jackson, Tenn. Alabama won’t sign all three of those guys, but landing one would easily cement this class as the best offensive line in the country.

Why didn’t two main targets commit this weekend?

Major Tennison, a 3-star tight end from Bullard (Texas) High School, told SEC Country before he visited for the team’s cookout Friday that a commitment wasn’t 100 percent guaranteed, but it was very possible.

He mentioned he wanted to visit several other schools before committing anywhere, most notably Florida, LSU and UCLA. Could he have delayed his decision to potentially visit those schools? It’s possible, but Tennison did not want to talk to the media after his visit to Alabama.

He’s now on vacation with his family in Destin, Fla. for the next week, so we shouldn’t expect any announcement until the first week of August at the earliest. He still remains a top target at tight end for Alabama.

Kyriq McDonald, a 3-star defensive back from James Clemens High School (Madison, Ala.), was also on commitment watch this weekend, but he decided to hold off.

He did set a commitment date for Aug. 2, which is the same day Randolph (mentioned above) will commit. It needs to be noted that those two are friends and grew up playing football together. Could those two announce for Alabama on that date? My guess is yes.
