Connor Murphy, one of the nation’s top defensive ends, has narrowed down his list weeks before National Signing Day.
Murphy, a four-star prospect from Brophy College Preparatory School (Phoenix), has Alabama, Michigan, Southern Cal, Oregon and Arizona State in his final five. He announced the news through his Twitter account.
The 6-foot-7, 250-pounder caught up with SEC Country in December to talk about Alabama’s chances of landing him, and he had nothing but good things to say about the Crimson Tide.
“They definitely have a huge shot to get me,” Murphy said. “They’re Alabama. They are always No. 1. They’re a huge powerhouse. Everyone knows Alabama football. They always produce some of the best talent. I can’t wait for my official visit. It’s going to be interesting to see how everyone is and how the whole vibe is.”
Alabama is recruiting Murphy to play the JACK linebacker position, which is a hybrid between outside linebacker and defensive end. Murphy said Saban just wants him on campus. It doesn’t matter where he ends up playing.
“He told me that I’m a hell of a ball player and he wants me to play for their school,” Murphy said. “He loves what a tough kid I am. He wants me to compete at Alabama.”
Murphy will take an official visit to Alabama on Jan. 29. He will also take an official visit to USC on Jan. 15 and Michigan on Jan. 22. He has already taken his official visit to Oregon.
He is rated as the nation’s No. 16 weakside defensive end and the state of Arizona’s No. 5 prospect, per the 247Sports Composite.

SAN ANTONIO, Tex. -- Rivals.com analysts spent an entire week in San Antonio evaluating U.S. Army All-American Bowl prospects in practices and the game. Here are our top 10 performers from the week in total.
quote:
4. WR Tyler Vaughns, La Puente (Calif.) Bishop Amat
Recruiting Wrap: Vaughns is committed to USC, but has an official visit scheduled to Alabama for the weekend of Jan. 22.
Performance: Vaughns came up with the most spectacular touchdown catch in the game, reeling in a 19-yard pass from K.J. Costello with cornerback Jordan Fuller in perfect defensive position. That play – and Vaughns’ three total receptions for 44 yards in the game – capped an impressive week for the Rivals100 prospect in which he showed natural athleticism and a strong command of route running.

7. ATH Mecole Hardman Jr., Bowman (Ga.) Elbert County
Recruiting Wrap: Alabama is the leader, but Georgia, Tennessee and TCU are also in play here.
Performance: Hardman made a strong case in the game and during the week of practices to be considered the most explosive player in San Antonio last week. He had a 31-yard punt return, 28-yard kick return and three receptions for 36 yards in the game. Hardman emerged as the East team’s most dynamic playmaker after switching from defensive back to wide receiver following the first day of practices.

9. DT Derrick Brown, Sugar Hill (Ga.) Lanier
Recruiting Wrap: Brown is set to officially visit Auburn, Georgia and Tennessee this month and will decide between those schools on National Signing Day.
Performance: Brown’s name does not register on the stat sheet from the game, but we noticed him several times getting a great push up the middle and forcing the football towards others in the front seven to make plays. Throughout the week the 6-foot-4, 320-pound defensive tackle formed a dynamic duo with Lawrence in the middle of the East defensive line. Motivation has been the primary concern with Brown in the past, and he was definitely motivated this week.

I have built a few threads somewhat similar to this one over the years at other Bama sites, but I have to admit you have done a helluva job with this thread, bruh. I have really enjoyed being able to get my daily fix in here, and want to thank you for your work.
So Asiasi has always seemed like a prospect that just wanted the Bama hat on the table to me, but after seeing Bama win a title thanks to a dominant performance from OJ (TE) any real chance with this kid or are we kidding ourselves ?
Has anyone heard if OJ intends to come back for his last year, or will he likely cash in ?

Quotes from O.J.
quote:
“It makes me think about coming back and playing and making plays next season for Coach,” Howard said. “It’ll get me more involved in the offense. As far as that goes, you can’t get frustrated when you’re not getting the ball. I know how that works, you get frustrated you start messing up plays and then you’re getting other guys hurt. If you’re missing a block, you’re definitely not going to get the ball if you’re pouting about it.
“You’ve just got to be a good team player and play hard every down, so that’s what I continued to do.”
But when will Howard, and the other Crimson Tide juniors eligible for the draft, make that important decision?
“Wednesday we have a meeting,” Howard said. “I’m pretty sure my parents will come up there with me and Coach and sit down and we’ll think hard on it. But at the end of the day, I’ll make the right decision.”

would be awesome if howard came back. the guy has WR speed, and now that he essentially won a NC for us, i dont see us neglecting him in the passing game next year. he is a nightmare matchup for any linebacker or safety, and if they roll a corner down to him that leaves ridley or stewart alone on a safety. Plus he has become a really good blocker (hes done a lot of that this season). Coming back and having a big year would put him in the top of the first round, with the premium on athletic TEs in the NFL

Howard needs to leave. Saban said he didn't get the ball much because they were trying to develop Jake. It will be the same thing next year.

I heard Saban say that, and on the one hand I understand -- you want your TE in as an extra blocker to give the QB more time.
On the other hand, how often have you heard the saying that the RB and TE are a QB's best friends when it comes to developing confidence? They're available for quick, pretty simple throws, and they're almost always matched up against a slower LB. Witness the effectiveness of Clemson's TE last night.
I dunno -- Howard's lack of production this year will always be a mystery to me.

Last night he missed a few big blocks that needed to get made that cost us some negative plays. He also looked a little lost at times of what play was being called. Great performance catching the ball but still needs to work on other parts of his game.
That being said I never understood why we did not use him more as a WR. He is a M Evans type of WR with his size and speed and a mismatch for a DB.

Jackson got abused last night. Charled Baldwin should be an upgrade. Our offense should be fine next year.

quote:Lets hope so. Dom was a liability all season. Shank had his bad moments too. I think with Bo having so much more of a burst and having high end acceleration, we won't see as many negative run plays next year.
