Who's the best defensive lineman in Georgia?

This isn't a t-shirt camp. This is a padded competition during which we'll get to see Julian Rochester and Derrick Brown butt heads with some of the top offensive linemen in the country. There's plenty of debate as to who is the better defensive lineman in Georgia and they're both among the top defensive linemen in the country but this event will be a great opportunity to get an answer on who is the better of the two. Just maybe there's a third Georgian that's better than both though. Antwuan Jackson is no slouch and the Cedar Grove defensive tackle will have plenty of motivation in Oregon.

Add Derrick Brown and Michail Carter to this group.

Who's the best linebacker in Alabama?

Ben Davis or Lyndell Wilson? Davis has been billed as the higher upside guy between the two but it's hard to argue with what Wilson has put on tape. The two will line up side by side for at least the second time this spring and we'll get a clean comparison.

Who's the fastest man?

The 40 yard dash should be fun this year. Devin Duvernay may be the favorite thanks in part to his 10.27 100 meter time during track season but he's going to have plenty of competition.

Earlier this year, Duvernay was clocked in the 40 yard dash at a Nike event at 4.38. But others went faster. Among the attendees at The Opening Finals, Florida State cornerback commit Levonta Taylor and Clemson running back commit Tavien Feaster will have the fastest 40 times to their credit with a 4.34 each. Wide receivers Tyrie Cleveland and Theo Howard each ran 4.38s as well. Others that could sneak into the fastest man conversation will be David Long Jr. (4.40) and LaVert Hill (4.41).

Chauncey Gardner didn't test in his regional event due to weather but with a 10.38 100 meter time to his credit, he needs to be in the discussion as well.

Hank South mentioned Duvernay yesterday in his Q&A as a potential one to watch at WR.

The riser candidates

Let me give you a few names of guys that have current rankings that could change drastically if they perform like we think they're capable.

*Tre Bryant – He's one of the top athletes in the country at running back but does he have the running back skill set to backup that athleticism?

*Frederick Mauigoa – An American Samoa native, Mauigoa doesn't have the opportunity to get exposure of some others in Oregon but if he dominates this event, that proves a lot.

*Caleb Roddy – In terms of frame and athleticism this LSU commit is one of the top upside guys at this event.

*Miller Forristall – An Alabama commit that has unique athleticism and versatility, Forristall has been getting a lot of buzz of late.

*Chase Claypool – There aren't many better equipped receivers in the country from a size/speed perspective and Claypool has been dominant in several recent settings.

*Connor Murphy – Already a four-star on 247Sports, how many 6-7, 250-pound defensive ends with motor and athleticism don't pan out.

*Brian Burns – If there's a darkhorse to earn a fifth star, Burns could be the guy. He's a speed rusher but in a padded setting he can't just run around these offensive tackle. We'll see what he can do engaged.

Prove it to us

There are some big names that have developed a national reputation who haven't always dominated to the level of their offer list. We're looking for a few guys to leave no doubts about their status.

*Darnell Salomon – Early on some considered him the best receiver in the country but Salomon can get lost in the shuffle at premier events.

*Shane Simmons – There aren't many better quick-twitch athletes in the country than Simmons but we'd like to see him impose his will on this event, something we haven't seen from him yet.

*Devin Asiasi – I like him the most as a defensive lineman but Asiasi sees himself as a tight end. At The Opening Oakland, he was not consistent at all with his hands. Can he remove any doubts that he's a tight end?

*Stephen Sullivan – There aren't many wide receivers in the country with the national skill-set of Sullivan but the LSU commit didn't finish on throws downfield at The Opening New Orleans and he's more of an upside guy to us right now than a finished product.

*Javon McKinley – Though he put up ridiculous stats as a junior in a wildly productive offense, McKinley has yet to dominate any event that we've seen him compete in.

*Khalil Ladler – Ladler started getting offers as a freshman and his profile grew rapidly but his height never really followed. As an undersized guy, can Ladler stand out in this elite setting?

Rarities

Island invasion

Hawaiian and American Samoa prospects have a chance to really put their stamp on The Opening in 2015. Mauigoa and Michael Eletise at offensive line, Vavae Malepeai at running back and Kalakua Timoteo at wide receiver will bring all kinds of energy to the event. If this is the beginning of more and more Islanders getting an opportunity to showcase themselves, that's an exciting trend to see.

Bama's behemoths

It's not debatable. Alabama commits Kendell Jones and Raekwon Davis will be the most imposing bodies at The Opening. Despite NFL players roaming the Nike Campus and coaching up the athletes, Davis and Jones may be even more imposing than most of the NFL guys. At 6-7, 315 pounds Davis is a monster but at 6-4.5, 351 pounds Jones is The Incredible Hulk. Both guys have a ways to go in terms of their technique and lateral agility but they are two of the more physically impressive guys we've seen in years.

I have zero doubt that Wilson and Davis will sign with Alabama.

What is the point of a Top Ten in schools? Can you realistically be that interested in all of them? You only get 5 official visits from which you get to choose just one.And to think parents are engaging in this silliness with their children.

The kids can go on multiple visits to any school that is part of the recruiting process.

From the Elite11 check-in:

quote:

LSU QB commit Feliepe Franks wants to see his teammate, FSU commit Keith Gavin join him as a Tiger.

“Right now I’m trying to work him towards Baton Rouge a little bit,” Franks said. “That’s what I’ve been targeting here.”

Do the Tigers have a chance?

“I’m talking to him. We might honestly, He’s talking high about LSU, Alabama, Florida State a whole bunch of schools. We might have a good chance.”

Looks like Demetris Robertson is a big recruiting target for a few QBs.
