Jeffery Holland article

quote:

JACKSONVILLE, Florida -- Auburn and Alabama continue to fight for a commitment from one of the country's top high school linebackers, who says he could come off the board at any time.

Five-star prospect Jeffery Holland of Trinity Christian (Fla.) has the size to become a dominant force at the next level and listed Auburn, Alabama, Florida, Florida State and Ohio State as his leaders on Wednesday.

"It's going very well," Holland told AL.com. "All of them are kind of even. I'm going to Miami on Friday and will take a road trip soon, but I don't know which [schools] I will go to."

Auburn and Alabama both hosted Holland once last summer.

Auburn, Alabama, Florida, Florida State and Ohio State are the frontrunners for the athletic defender. (247Sports)

He has built a good relationship with Tigers defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson and has an interesting connection to Auburn -- his uncle, Carey, played alongside NBA legend Charles Barkley on the Plains in the 1980s.

"I like their coaches," said the 6-foot-3, 232-pounder. "[Auburn] is one of the places I could see myself playing at. I like like Coach Johnson, he's a pretty cool, old-school guy. I had a good time there."

Holland's teammate, 2016 running back prospect Jalin Buie, committed to the Tigers earlier this year.

"He says we can go there together and dominate," Holland said.

As for the Crimson Tide, defensive coordinator Kirby Smart has made quite an impression on the young star.

"We've talked about my future and how I fit in with their defense and can get to the next level," he said. "We talk about the success of the program. He's a pretty cool guy. He's loyal and will never lie to you."

Meanwhile, the coaches in Gainesville are doing their best to keep Holland from slipping out of the state. He said Florida has been recruiting him harder than any school and he communicates with Gators defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin nearly every day.

Holland tallied 48 tackles (17.5 for loss) and 11.5 sacks in 2013, while also seeing time at running back and receiver. Trinity head coach Verlon Dorminey praised Holland's athleticism and believes he will land somewhere in the SEC.

"He loves to play this game," Dorminey said. "He works hard at it and is just one of those freak athletes. One of those kids who come along once in a lifetime. He has to work on his grades, but I really believe he's going to play somewhere in the SEC."

Holland is considered the No. 3 outside linebacker prospect in the nation, according to the 247Sports Composite.

A breakdown of Alabama's defensive tackle recruits for 2015

quote:

Over the next few weeks, we'll be taking a look at some of the top recruiting targets at each position group for the Crimson Tide for the Class of 2015. Today, we take a look at five of Alabama's top prospects at the defensive tackle position, all of whom happen to be ranked among the top overall prospects in the nation by the major recruiting services.

Trent Thompson
6-foot-4, 292 lbs
Westover HS/Albany, GA

The nation's No. 1 defensive tackle according to multiple recruiting services, Thompson was considered to be a heavy Georgia lean until two recent trips to the state of Alabama wherein he visited both Auburn and Tuscaloosa for Junior Day events. Thompson was impressed with both schools from the state of Alabama and will likely visit both again at some point this spring or summer. Thompson called his visit to Alabama the best recruiting visit he's taken to date.

Daron Payne
6-foot-2, 316 lbs
Shades Valley HS/Birmingham, AL

The state's No. 1 prospect for the Class of 2015, Payne is one of the most dominant defensive linemen to come out of the state in years. His massive frame and powerful push commands double and even triple-teams regularly from opposing offenses, making him the kind of interior presence college coaches dream about. Payne grew up an Auburn fan but has built a strong relationship early with the Alabama coaching staff.

Tim Settle
6-foot-3, 305 lbs
Stonewall Jackson HS/Mannassas, VA

This massive five-star defensive tackle was impressed with his visit to Tuscaloosa in early February and named Alabama among his top three schools along with Ohio State and Virginia. Settle plans on returning to Alabama sometime in April, potentially for Alabama's spring game.

Shy Tuttle
6-foot-3, 315 lbs
North Davidson HS/Lexington, NC

Tuttle has been on the Crimson Tide's radar since last summer, when he visited Tuscaloosa for one of Alabama's summer camps. Kevin Steele has since taken over the recruitment of the elite interior lineman and Alabama is one of a handful of schools contending for Tuttle's signature, along with North Carolina, Clemson, and Tennessee.

Breiden Fehoko
6-foot-3, 290 lbs
Farrington HS/Honolulu, HI

Hawaii is one of the few remaining states that Alabama has yet to mine for talent under the watch of Nick Saban but the Crimson Tide are actively pursuing one of the state's top prospects for 2015. Fehoko attended a camp at Alabama last summer and will likely return again this summer. Alabama is battling several national powers for his signature, including Southern Cal, Oklahoma, and Clemson.

Not that it totally precludes the possibility of him entertaining us, but he's from Maryville which is basically Knoxville's cheerleader city.

BR Power Ranked the Top DBs for the 2015 class:

quote:

9. Jamal Peters

Size: 6'3", 200 pounds

School: Bassfield High School (Bassfield, Miss.)

Junior Season Highlights

Jamal Peters helped push the Yellowjackets to a state championship, ranking second on the team with 72 tackles, per MaxPreps. He added five sacks and also caught four touchdown passes as a receiver.

Scouting Report

Peters plays like a linebacker in the box, bullying blockers en route to the ball-carrier. He provides outstanding perimeter containment against the rush and hits hard.

In pass coverage, he's a difficult matchup for most receivers. His height and physicality help snuff out opportunities, although he can be beaten downfield by players with elite speed.

He is a promising strong safety prospect.

Recruitment Status

Mississippi State and Ole Miss entered his recruitment process at an early stage. He is also heavily considering Alabama, where he attended a junior day in February. ACC powers Clemson and Florida State are in the mix as well.

quote:

7. Minkah Fitzpatrick

Size: 6'0", 185 pounds

School: St. Peter's Prep High School (Jersey City, N.J.)

Junior Season Highlights

Minkah Fitzpatrick contributed mightily to team that was a state champion. He shined at receiver and cornerback, where he broke up 21 pass attempts, picked off four passes and secured 62 tackles.

Scouting Report

Fitzpatrick is the latest in a long line of highly touted athletes to emerge at St. Peter's Prep, a Northeast powerhouse. He plays stride-for-stride coverage and operates with smooth footwork.

His hands are soft from taking substantial reps at receiver. He isn't physically overpowering but shows impressive leaping abilities, interfering with downfield passes.

Fitzpatrick does a nice job of cleaning up in perimeter coverage when running backs reach the edge.

Recruitment Status

He attended junior days at Alabama and Georgia. Fitzpatrick's expansive offer list includes Ohio State, Florida, Florida State, Miami and Michigan.

quote:

5. Rico McGraw

Size: 6'0", 190 pounds

School: Ensworth High School (Nashville, Tenn.)

Junior Season Highlights

Rico McGraw played a pivotal role during the Tigers' run to a state title. He tallied 29 tackles and three interceptions while also contributing on offense with six rushing touchdowns.

Scouting Report

McGraw will secure his fair share of interceptions because of quality hands and an ability to adjust mid-air. He shadows receivers, displaying precise footwork and exceptional timing.

Among cornerback prospects, he must be considered one of the best one-on-one defenders in America. He isn't targeted nearly as frequently as his teammates because his reputation and effective play cause quarterbacks and coaches to look elsewhere when putting together an offensive game plan.

His largest improvements will come near the line of scrimmage, where McGraw can become increasingly stout against the run.

Recruitment Status

McGraw committed to Georgia in January, days after former Florida State defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt joined the staff. Ohio State and Alabama are among his viable options elsewhere.

2. Tarvarus McFadden

Size: 6'3", 185 pounds

School: American Heritage High School (Plantation, Fla.)

Junior Season Highlights

Tavarus McFadden tallied 31 tackles for the state champions, per MaxPreps. He ranked second on the squad with 10 passes defended.

Scouting Report

McFadden is a scintillating secondary star who projects favorably as a safety in college. His long frame and phenomenal speed help him establish range and control at the back of a defensive unit.

He is an electric kick returner who makes defenders miss in the open field and is off to the races when he reaches the sidelines.

He aims low too often on tackles, but he still does a nice job of delivering hits and wrapping up. He can shut down the flat depending on which side of the field he lines up.

Recruitment Status

McFadden attended a January junior day at Miami. Fellow in-state options Florida and Florida State are firmly in the mix. LSU, Georgia and Auburn have also come calling from the SEC.

BR also Power Ranked the Top WRs in the 2015 class:

quote:

10. Alex Ofodile

Size: 6'3", 185 pounds

School: Rock Bridge High School (Columbia, Mo.)

Junior Season Highlights

Alex Ofodile enjoyed a burst in production for the Bruins as a junior. He caught a career-high 92 passes for nearly 1,300 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Scouting Report

Ofodile has the physical approach of a tight end and size that nearly warrants a look at that position, but he's also a burner. He rapidly accelerates off the line and has enough spring to beat the majority of defenders in a footrace.

He's a technician in the open field as a route-runner. His precision and burst to the ball will make many quarterbacks happy in the future.

He uses his height and leaping ability to beat opponents on high-target pass attempts. That's a distinct advantage in the red zone.

Recruitment Status

He attended a February junior day at Missouri. The Tigers are an early favorite to keep the coveted in-state recruit, but Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Florida State and Clemson are among several teams that are involved in the equation.

quote:

4. Christian Kirk

Size: 5'10", 195 pounds

School: Saguaro High School (Scottsdale, Ariz.)

Junior Season Highlights

Christian Kirk eclipsed the 1,000-yard receiving mark for a second straight season on the way to a state championship. He caught 65 passes for 1,183 yards and 17 touchdowns, adding another 832 yards and 13 scores on the ground.

Scouting Report

Kirk plays bigger than his physical dimensions indicate. He attacks defenses as a versatile threat out of the backfield, in the slot and out wide.

His effort in tight coverage is fantastic. He likely won't emerge as a consistent deep threat in college, but he is a reliable top-end target across the middle and along the sidelines.

He isn't a speedster by high-level collegiate standards, but rumbles like a running back with the ball in his hands. He's a strong candidate to lead his team in yards after contact.

Recruitment Status

He received offers from Penn State, Ole Miss, Louisville, Auburn and Alabama in recent weeks. Expect Texas A&M, Oregon, USC, Ohio State and Oklahoma also to remain in the picture throughout this process.

3. Preston Williams

Size: 6'4", 190 pounds

School: Lovejoy High School (Hampton, Ga.)

Junior Season Highlights

Preston Williams propelled the Wildcats to a 10-win campaign and regional title. He finished the season with 59 receptions for 1,388 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Scouting Report

Williams is devastatingly fast and finds space downfield. When a 6'4" athlete can fly at that rate, you're talking about a rare talent.

His unfair advantage of stature and speed makes him an impactful kick returner. He is an ideal target in long-yardage situations.

He displays excellent anticipation of incoming passes—an element and instinct that can rarely be coached. Expect him to emerge as a No. 1 receiver as an underclassman in college.

Recruitment Status

He committed to Tennessee in September but remains open to other possibilities. Williams attended a junior day at Florida this month and visited Georgia in February. Alabama, South Carolina and Auburn also have offers on the table.

2. Damarkus Lodge

Size: 6'2.5", 190 pounds

School: Cedar Hill High School (Cedar Hill, Texas)

Junior Season Highlights

Damarkus Lodge dominated for state champion Cedar Hill. He caught 72 passes for 1,255 yards and scored 25 offensive touchdowns.

Scouting Report

Lodge makes the tough catches look easy in traffic, bringing a smooth approach to the position. He shows serious concentration on every possession and secures the ball.

His route running is largely sharp, though he could develop more initial explosiveness off the snap. He runs with impressive power and picks up major chunks of yardage after receptions.

Lodge presents a large target for the quarterback and can make up for mistakes with outstanding vertical reach.

Recruitment Status

Texas, Texas A&M and Baylor are battling for the in-state standout. He attended a junior day at College Station in late February. Lodge collected offers from Alabama, LSU and Michigan during a two-week stretch this winter.

1. Calvin Ridley

Size: 6'2", 170 pounds

School: Monarch High School (Coconut Beach, Fla.)

Junior Season Highlights

Calvin Ridley was a feared downfield playmaker during a playoff run for the Knights. He tallied 41 receptions for 1,131 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Scouting Report

Ridley has a slight mean streak on the field, which makes him a competitive receiver. He plays with supreme confidence and feasts on defensive deficiencies.

His stardom extends to the defensive side of the football, where he excels in the secondary. Ridley can rely on his speed and shiftiness to escape defenders but also has brute force in his arsenal.

He's another top receiver who is primed to make an impact as a kick returner. His explosiveness is evidenced by a 2013 average of 28 yards per catch.

Recruitment Status

Miami has made Ridley a top priority and hosted him for a junior day in January. His recruitment reached another level in February, when Notre Dame, Alabama, USC, Auburn and Georgia extended offers.
