Blake Barnett scouting report. Yes, it still refers to him as a ND commit. Too lazy to change it

You don’t have to be a great athlete to be a great quarterback, but it sure does help. It certainly helps Blake Barnett make a ton of big plays. The Santiago High School quarterback is committed to Notre Dame and has more upside than any quarterback they have signed in the last decade. He’s a really good prospect now who is only going to get better.
Height: 6’4?
Weight: 193

Athletic ability/measurables
Barnett has everything you are looking for in a quarterback in terms of measurables. He’s got the height/weight/speed ratio that touches all the bases.
Skills/technique
I’ve seen a few different places where recruiting analysts have compared him to current Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota. While that is certainly a flattering comparison given the way Mariota has played the past two seasons, he’s not the guy who came to mind when watching Barnett. To me, Barnett looks an awful lot like former Nevada quarterback Colin Kaepernick from a physical skill standpoint.
He’s a long strider that really can eat up ground and run by people. I would like to see him be a bit more patient in the pocket, but there are a lot of benefits to him scrambling. Not only does he have the ability for significant gains when he breaks contain, but the threat of him running also opens up some coverage where he is able to get the ball downfield for big plays. He has displayed a big arm when throwing on the run.
There was a huge jump in arm strength and athleticism for Barnett from his sophomore to his junior year. At times, he was throwing some frozen ropes by the end of his junior season. His accuracy was pretty good, but he wasn’t as spot on with his ball placement as you would like to see.
The main deficiency I see in Barnett’s mechanics is the his slower delivery. Just like Kaepernick, he brings the ball away from his body and has more of a wind-up in his release, which makes it slower. It’s something he will likely look to improve on next season and during his time at Notre Dame.
Scheme fit
This season will be the first year at Notre Dame that Brian Kelly will be able to run the spread offense that he prefers with a more mobile quarterback in Everett Golson. Barnett should be a perfect fit into what they are trying to do as it would be a waste to have him in an offense that didn’t utilize his talent as a runner.
Potential
Barnett isn’t as polished as a couple of the other quarterbacks in this recruiting class, but I think his ceiling is as high as anyone. He will likely have to wait his turn at Notre Dame for a couple of seasons, but it wouldn’t shock me if he was able to unseat a couple of other mobile quarterbacks that will already be on Notre Dame’s roster after a season in South Bend. Redshirting should help him refine his game before he eventually becomes the starting quarterback that Brian Kelly is looking for at Notre Dame.

I still have nightmares of Cyrus Jones in coverage.

He didn't bother me as much as Kelley did by getting driven into the backfield game after game. when your center is pushed back five yards into the backfield it really fricks up a running play. safe to say i wasn't happy when lindsey transferred

It has been said that Kelly might be the best returning olineman we have. We're fricked.

Well id give that to shep. then Kelley and Ari

Yeah Shep improved greatly last year. Arie
It will be interesting to see what Cristobal can do. He inherited jack shite save for CyKo. CyKo regressed, but is that on Cristobal or on CyKo?

Id say CyKo. Probably heard the words first round to much from the year before. He thought he had already made it.

From Florida, Devonaire Clarington is a 4-star pass-catcher who looks like a 'tweener right now. Clarington has spent most of his career playing receiver, but he lacks ideal speed for the position in college.
However, at just about 6'6" and 222 pounds, he could find a niche as a tight end. If Clarington wishes to stay at receiver, he needs to prove he has adequate speed on the perimeter this summer. Should he not prove himself capable of stacking cornerbacks with speed, he needs to prove he has the point-of-attack strength to give himself hope at tight end.
LSU and Miami are his top schools, according to 247Sports.

George Campbell is a 5-star recruit from Florida who has excellent athleticism. The 6'3.5", 184-pounder displays great speed as a receiver.
However, Campbell doesn't have the best hands in the world. He is not a natural receiver of the football, and he'll drop a pass or two. Campbell needs to prove to everyone this summer that he indeed is capable of plucking passes on the move with his mitts.
If not, he may get moved to another position in college. Florida and Clemson are his favorites, per 247Sports.
Campbell told the following to Mike Singer of InsidetheGators.com (subscription required) on May 13:
"I've been to Florida. You can see everything with your own eyes. That's mainly what they want."

Possible Heisman finalists from 2015 class:
LINK

Damien Harris is the top-rated running back in a class of rushers that doesn't appear to be on par with recent recruiting cycles. He has a college-ready physique that allows him to shrug off defenders and drive through traffic at the line of scrimmage, where he exhibits tremendous burst to reach the second level.
Harris churned out 2,600 yards and 42 touchdowns as a junior. His production came in bunches during a 12-game season at Madison Southern High School.
He has the makings of workhorse back for a title contender and could realistically share carries in a college backfield next fall. It remains to be seen where Harris will compete for handoffs in 2015.
He decommitted from Michigan in January, resulting in a surge of interest from across the country. Kentucky would love to keep him home, but Ohio State, Florida and Florida State are also in pursuit.

Same article on potential Heisman finalists:

quote:
It's hard to ignore Alabama's ability to put running backs in the hunt for a Heisman Trophy.
Mark Ingram was a two-time finalist, winning the award in 2009. Trent Richardson was invited to the presentation in 2011, and now T.J. Yeldon is viewed as a strong contender to compete for the 2014 trophy.
Desherrius Flowers is the latest in a long line of scintillating rushers headed to Tuscaloosa after committing as a sophomore. Though Vigor High School won just four games last season, he still managed to impress.
He's collected nearly 2,100 rushing yards and 24 touchdowns during the past two seasons. Flowers finds a way to explode into the open field and picks up yards in a hurry, even when he appears bottled up behind the line of scrimmage.
Like his predecessors at Alabama, he will have to be patient while waiting for his turn to step up with the Crimson Tide. When the opportunity arrives, expect Flowers to hit the ground running.

We know, we know—defensive players don't win the Heisman Trophy. But there's always a chance, right?
Michigan cornerback and punt returner Charles Woodson is the last defender to win the award, back in 1997. Plenty of potential candidates have stated their case since then, but it simply hasn't been enough to topple the longstanding reign of running backs and quarterbacks.
Malik Jefferson is our choice as a prospect who could threaten the establishment.
The ferocious 6'2", 225-pound linebacker does so much for a defense. He chases down quarterbacks, covers the pass well and absolutely stuffs the opposing rushing attack.
Jefferson, rated No. 9 nationally among 2015 prospects in 247Sports' composite rankings, is a menace off the edge. He's the kind of defender who can put together the kind of statistics and highlight plays that force Heisman voters to pay attention.
Jefferson forced eight fumbles during the past two seasons, tallying 188 tackles and 19 sacks.
Given his list of collegiate suitors, he figures to spend plenty of time playing in the spotlight. Texas, Alabama, Oklahoma, Baylor and Texas A&M are among top contenders.

Alabama usually does well at every position in recruiting, but the offensive line class they are putting together has the chance to be at a completely different level.
Lester Cotton may end up being the best of the bunch. The guard from Tuscaloosa won’t have to go far to play his college football and should develop into another outstanding offensive lineman for the Tide.
Height: 6’4?
Weight: 318
Athletic ability/measurables
Cotton is big enough to compete in the SEC right now. He has some re-shaping of his body to do, like most lineman his age, but that will come with time. He’s a very good athlete for his size and is very light on his feet.
Skills/technique
Cotton may be the best pass blocking interior lineman in the entire recruiting class. He moves his feet really well and has a devastating punch. He does a great job of anchoring against the bull rush. He can handle both speed and power rushes against him.
He can be a finisher as a run blocker. He does a great job of turning a defenders shoulders and taking him out of the play. His athleticism really stands out when he gets to the second level and he has no issue with being able to get to linebackers to cut them off.
One thing he needs to improve on is firing off consistently when the ball is snapped. Quickness is not an issue for him. He just doesn’t always react like he should. If he did, he could be a lot more dominant in the run game.
Scheme fit
Cotton is the kind of lineman that every team in the SEC covets and will match up well against elite defensive lineman. He’s a good fit in Alabama’s scheme.
Potential
Cotton has the tools to be the best guard in this recruiting class and he should develop into an absolute stud at Alabama by the time he is able to start for the Tide.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for a very long time, you probably noticed they play pretty good football in the state of Alabama at the college level. It’s not a coincidence that they also produce some pretty good football players from inside the state as well and Darryl Williams is one of the best ones from the state of Alabama this year in recruiting.
Williams is an athletic and physical guard prospect that has the tools to excel in every area as an interior lineman at the next level.
Height: 6’4?
Weight: 304
Athletic ability/measurables
Williams is a very good athlete for his size and has great feet. He moves incredibly well for a big man. He has good size for an interior lineman, but needs to re-shape his body when he gets to college.
Skills/technique
There is a lot to like about the way Williams plays football. His athleticism really stands out on every snap. He does a great job of moving his feet and turning the shoulders of a defensive lineman. He blocks to finish in the run game and there are several plays where he is driving his man fifteen to twenty yards down the field.
He does an outstanding job of getting out to second level and looks great when pulling as well. There are times when he plays a bit out of control and plays too high or over aggressive when approaching linebackers at the second level. He needs to do a better job of breaking down and fitting his block. Football is a game of controlled violence and while his aggression is a good thing, he can take himself out of the play by not being more under control. This is all very coachable though and should be something Williams improves on.
Williams moves well as a pass blocker and does a great job with his feet and balance. As a guard, he can be elite in this part of the game.
Scheme fit
Williams is athletic enough and has the size to play guard in just about any offensive scheme. He also could be a candidate at center as well.
Potential
I can see why Williams earned an invite to The Opening after watching his film. He has the tools to excel in every part of the game as an interior lineman. He needs to refine his technique and continue to get stronger, but I envision him starting multiple years at guard and playing at a very high level in college.

Jovon Durante scouting report:
LINK
quote:
It wasn’t that long ago that West Virginia was a hot program with Dan Holgorsen bringing in an offense that players like Geno Smith and Tavon Austin thrived in. Now if you type in “Dana Holgorsen” into Google it will be immediately followed by “hot seat”.
The head coach may be on thin ice, but he doesn’t seem to have any issues with finding offensive talent to play in his offense. Jovon Durante is an elite wide receiver out of Florida that normally would end up at one of the big three in-state or an SEC school. Fortunately for Holgorsen, Durante is currently committed to play in Morgantown and if he sticks he’ll be a great fit in an explosive offense.
Height: 6’0?
Weight: 175
Athletic ability/measurables
Durante isn’t a massive target and will have to add weight and strength over the new few years. His game is based on speed though and he can fly.
Skills/technique
Jovon Durante does a bit of everything for Miami Norland high school and gets to show off his versatility. He has the speed to get over the top of a defense and if he gets a step, then it’s probably going to be six points. He’s a threat running jet sweep plays and can make people miss in the open field. He doesn’t run a complicated route tree, but likely would not have to at West Viriginia either.
I love the way Durante competes for the ball in the air. He won’t wait. He’ll simply go up and get it. His size would suggest that he would not be a big time red zone target, but with the way he competes for the ball, I believe that is where he is best.
His competitive fire is also evident as a blocker. There are other bigger receivers who are not half the blocker he is currently and it all has to do with effort.
Scheme fit
Durante is someone who could line up all over the field. He likely will play out wide, but it wouldn’t shock me if he saw some snaps in the slot either.
Potential
It’s difficult to see Durante not succeeding if he sticks with West Virginia because players like him are supposed to play in an offense like Holgorsen’s to take advantage of their talents. He has the chance to develop into a big time weapon for the Mountaineers offense and should put up some big numbers over his career.
