If we want a realistic name as DC and an upgrade as well then why not invite Derrick Ansley to come home? An Alabama boy with a University degree to boot. He knows the system, certainly knows the head coach and has experience oozing out of his resume these days. He coached 6 or 7 All-American DBs during his stay as DB coach. Make him an offer he can't refuse and let him feel the Crimson love.

And Tennessee gets to go shopping for a new DC. That's not a bad thing either.

We would have a glut of secondary coaches (part of why Golding ended up at Linebackers to begin with despite being a DB guy), depends how much movement Saban is looking to make with the staff outside of the DC.

It doesn't feel like a major hurdle. Especially given the way our DBs were tackling this season. The main thing is we need an excellent DC and we get a Bama man to boot. This hire is all about getting it right. Working around position coaches ain't no big thing.

Golding should have been a secondary coach , not LBs.

Now lets see what CNS does by February NSD with coaches.

I can't wait that long, lol.

It was mentioned somewhere here that Saban again tried to poach Jimmy Lake (just before he was made HC at Washington). So, CNS is swinging for the fences.

My hope is that right now he is swinging for Charlie Strong (who also happens to have coached LBs for several years at Florida). As far as I know, Strong's name has not been mentioned for any of the remaining HC options. With HC options running out, becoming Alabama's DC might not be a bad consolation prize.

And otherwise we get Glen Schumann back from UGA and make him our DC and ILB coach. He seems to have all the right tools.

Strong is a complete no go for me, I'm from the Tampa area and strong just absolutely shite the bed recruiting wise there.

as long as we have Saban, we're gonna be just fine on the recruiting front.

He also just didn't actually coach. He basically took a paid vacation there, setting the program back severely while not producing quality defenses. He is an absolutely god awful hire.

Noted: Charlie Strong, shitty coach and shitty recruiter. This is really helpful...

I get that you think I'm overblowing how bad a job he did in tampa, but I was actually pretty high on his hire and watched him just fail miserably at the lowest tier head coaching job he has been at (with honestly pretty manageable expectations). The defense had one good year reaching 29th in s&p before falling to 80th in s&p and then slightly rebounding to 59th.
You could argue he didnt run that defense, but he was given the credit for the high finish and notably missed on recruiting and restocking the depth for key defensive positions each of the 3 years.
I get that we want to hand wave away recruiting as something saban can fix, but we can't both criticize golding for being a bad recruiter and a potential hindrance on landing key defensive recruits because he is bad on the trail and then turn around and suggest Strong as an actual option.

This is exactly the kind of additional explanation I was looking for. Thanks for posting it!

What's his track record as a coordinator though? Just because he was a suckfest as a head coach at USF doesn't mean it's a terrible coordinator hire.

We are now three head coaching stints past being a coordinator. The body of evidence for both his defenses and recruiting is not Alabama caliber.

Y'all paying attention to Joe Brady being on the short list to become Penn State's new OC? I don't have a dog in that fight but he has history at Penn State. I'm watching to see what happens.

Schumann may be a great coordinator someday. He has never been one, so no one here has a clue whether he would be or not. We're going through that now with Golding. I would be, however, elated with even Donald Duck over Goldie boy.

Ohio State passing game coordinator / quarterbacks coach Mike Yurcich has emerged as a leading candidate for the Texas offensive coordinator. Brett McMurphy shared the news via a tweet today.

Huge loss for Ohio State if he takes the job.

Washington: Offensive coordinator / quarterbacks coach Bush Hamdan and tight ends coach Jordan Paopao will not be retained, new head coach Jimmy Lake has announced.
Interesting.....

He's been there 1 season and Ryan Day is still their HC.

Can't imagine that being a big loss. Like Lincoln Riley losing an OC...
