quote:

Alabama head coach Nick Saban provided injury updates on a trio of players shortly after the Crimson Tide’s 49-7 win over Southern Miss on Saturday afternoon.

The first two players he addressed were placekicker Will Reichard and defensive tackle DJ Dale, who both went to the locker room at Bryant-Denny Stadium and did not return to the field.

“Will Reichard has a pulled hip flexor, which, as a kicker, may be difficult for him to manage,” Saban said in a press conference. “He did it on the kick that sort of kicked the tee instead of the ball. He may be questionable for this game.

“DJ Dale, I think, is going to be OK. He had a little like patellar tendon strain, but doc thinks he may be OK. Hopefully, we get some guys back for this game. We’ll just have to make day-to-day decisions during the course of the week as to how much they can practice.”

After kicking the first two extra points in the game, Reichard walked to the locker room earlier in the second quarter under his own power and was replaced by Joseph Bulovas. Bulovas kicked the final five PATs. Dale left the game just before halftime and was replaced by Phidarian Mathis, who registered one tackle and forced a fumble that was recovered by safety Jordan Battle.

Linebackers Terrell Lewis and Markail Benton did not play Saturday and instead watched the non-conference game from the sideline in street clothes. Saban did not have an update on Benton.

As for Lewis, he was not at Tuesday’s practice and appeared limited during the media viewing periods Wednesday. The redshirt junior left the South Carolina game last week but was able to return the next series. After the game, he said that his knee “just got banged up a little bit.”

But after the Southern Miss game, Saban revealed a much different story. “Terrell hyper-extended his knee in the last game, so it was a strategic decision that needed to get made relative to if they do a procedure that sort of helps the healing process now or wait until the bye week,” Saban said.

“So, we always are going to do things relative to what’s in the best interest for the player. We kind of left it up to Terrell. He wanted to do it and try to get well as soon as possible. So, I would think by next Tuesday, we’re hopeful that he would be able to be back in the swing of things and doing thins the right way and be able to play next week. But it’s always going to be day-to-day in terms of how he responds to the treatment.”

Alabama will next host the Ole Miss Rebels on Saturday, Sept. 28, at 2:30 p.m. CT (CBS).

now that Brown is eligible does he come in at LG or does the RG go to center and Owens sits the bench with Brown playing RG?

I'd imagine that Neal, Dickerson, and Cornbread are going to be competing for the 2 guard spots. Dickerson sucks at snapping so if Owens loses his spot it'll be to Ekiyor or Dalcourt.

Neal is not a natural guard, but from what I have seen our most successful runs have been behind him and Leatherwood. Dickerson also seems to have taken on a leadership role with the OL. I'm not sure Cornbread is going to take back one of those spots. People have been treating it like a foregone conclusion for months, but chemistry matters on the OL. I doubt he will be back in the starting lineup against OM. If the run game is effective he may not get in with the 1s at all. If a change is going to be made it'll happen during the bye week.

I think he is going to replace Neal. Neal isn't a guard and needs to get in shape.

Agreed. Brown is older and has starting experience. Plus he's a natural guard. Neal is a tackle all the way and will be a great one in time. His future is bright. But Cornbread is a beast run blocker.

Plug Brown in at the other guard spot opposite Dickerson and maybe our weakness at center is masked somewhat. If not, Dalcourt needs to be thrown into the fire. Now we just need to find a RT that plays every play. Wills almost got Tua killed yesterday taking plays off.

OL is steadily getting better. I still think Cornbread will take a spot at some point but it won’t be OM. He will have to earn his way back and wait for an opportunity. He also needs to prove he can stay healthy. He struggled with turf toe last year and missed a lot of time and has missed some time this fall with some minor undisclosed injury. He’s gonna have to wait his turn now.

quote:

Here’s a breakdown of how Alabama performed statistically following its 49-7 victory over Southern Miss. First, let's take a look at some of the highlights of Saturday’s game. Highlights

The good:
Tua Tagovailoa threw for a single-game school record of five touchdowns for a second straight week. The junior has now reached the mark three times in his career (Southern Miss 2019, South Carolina 2019, Auburn 2018). Gary Hollingsworth is the only other Alabama quarterback to accomplish the feat, passing for five touchdowns against Ole Miss in 1989.

Henry Ruggs III has no trouble making himself at home inside Bryant-Denny Stadium. The speedy receiver scored on a 45-yard touchdown pass from Tagovailoa on Alabama’s third offensive play of the game Saturday. That comes after he found the end zone on a 75-yard run against New Mexico State on the opening play from scrimmage during the Crimson Tide’s previous home game.

— It was a career day for Ruggs, who tallied 148 yards and two touchdowns on four catches. The two scores give him 21 receiving touchdowns on his career, moving him into sole possession of third place on Alabama’s all-time list. Jerry Jeudy also had two touchdown receptions, moving him one spot ahead of Ruggs with 22 on his career. Amari Cooper holds the school record with 31.

Najee Harris became Alabama’s first 100-yard rusher of the season, recording 110 yards on 14 carries. The achievement snapped a nine-game drought of 100-yard rushers for the Crimson Tide. Saturday marked the second 100-yard game of Harris’ career. The junior ran for a career-high 135 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries against Arkansas State last season.

— Alabama’s defense held Southern Miss to 52 yards on the ground. The Golden Eagles averaged just 1.6 yards per carry and saw just four of their 32 attempts go for more than five yards.

The bad:
— Alabama is still struggling on punts as Skyler Delong averaged just 37 yards on his two attempts in the game.

— Alabama threw its first interception of the season as Mac Jones was picked off in the fourth quarter. The Crimson Tide started the season with 131 passes without an interception.

— Alabama saw two more players go down to injury. Freshman kicker Will Reichard is day-to-day after suffering a pulled hip flexor during a kickoff in the first quarter. Meanwhile, freshman defensive tackle D.J. Dale is also day-to-day after sustaining a patellar tendon strain just before the half. Outside linebacker Terrell Lewis was held out of the game after hyperextending his knee against South Carolina last week. Head coach Nick Saban said the junior had a procedure done and his absence was a “strategic decision.” Lewis is also day-to-day.

Did you know:
Alabama extended its streak to 29 straight wins when scoring a touchdown on its first offensive possession. The Crimson Tide’s last loss after finding the end zone on its first drive was to the Oklahoma Sooners in the 2014 Allstate Sugar Bowl.

Pro Football Focus numbers behind the pay wall - Every week these grades seem to be a bit differently presented... very confusing. This week LT and LG were best at PassPro, LT was highly ranked at Run Blk, LG not mentioned?

BamaOnLine.com staff members Charlie Potter and Travis Reier hand out position grades for the Alabama Crimson Tide following its 49-7 win over Southern Mississippi.
OFFENSE
Quarterback
Travis Reier:
Is 10 touchdown passes in two games any good, Charlie? Seeing as how more than four in back-to-back games has never happened at UA, I’m going to guess it is. Just when the “all ya gotta do is take away the slants” noise was starting to crank up, Tua Tagovailoa goes over the top on a double move to Henry Ruggs III. Speaking of a double move, we saw two backup quarterbacks on Saturday. Maybe it was the plan all along, but interesting that Taulia Tagovailoa was inserted into the game immediately after Mac Jones was picked off in the fourth quarter. The younger Tagovailoa made a play, too, hooking up with Slade Bolden to convert a fourth down on a touchdown drive. Combine the play of the Tagovailoas with the Bryce Young news on the recruiting front and it’s an A here.

Charlie Potter: I think this Tua guy might be pretty good. He’s thrown for 1,300 yards, 17 scores and zero interceptions through the first four games -- and will face an Ole Miss team this week that isn’t very good at defending the pass. But we’ll talk more about that next week. This week, he threw more touchdown passes than incompletions and led an offense that looked like one of the best in the nation. Taulia threw his first pass, which was a 20-yard completion to Bolden. An interception by Jones -- the first of the season for UA -- keeps the quarterbacks from getting an A+. I’m going with an A, too.

Running back
TR: Najee Harris
produced Alabama’s first 100-yard rushing performance since Damien Harris went for 107 against LSU last November. Another sort of grind it out day for both Harris and Brian Robinson, as both are still in search of their first runs of 20 yards or more this season. Both showed patience and discipline, making sure to get what was there instead of trying to do too much. Plus, the offense got another touchdown reception from Harris. Like Robinson, Jerome Ford ran with authority in a goal-to-go situation. Also worth noting that these guys haven’t lost a fumble since the first quarter of the opener. I’ll go B+ here.

CP: No real explosive plays from the running backs, but Harris picked up 110 yards on only 14 carries, averaging nearly 8.0 yards per carry. That’ll play. Together, Harris, Robinson, Ford and Chadarius Townsend averaged 5.25 yards per carry and scored a couple of touchdowns. A couple of plays in the receiving game and no turnovers for the tailbacks gets an A- from me.

Receivers
TR:
Another 100-yard game for Henry Ruggs III and two more touchdown receptions for the junior. In his last two games, Ruggs has caught 10 passes for 270 yards and three scores. Jeudy catches two more touchdown passes, giving him six through four games. Between them, Ruggs and Jeudy now have a combined 43 career scoring receptions on 186 career career catches. That’s insane. Tight ends weren't really a factor in the passing game Saturday, but it’s still an A+ here.

CP: Ruggs and Jeudy have been ridiculously good to start the season. And Jaylen Waddle (3 catches, 43 yards) and DeVonta Smith (2, 26) haven’t been slouches. It’s crazy that Waddle has not scored a touchdown yet, though I’m sure that’s a stat that won’t stand long. Bolden, or Mr. Versatility, also accounted for 20 yards and played the role of Wildcat quarterback, pitching the ball to Harris on a third-down attempt and moving the chains. It was a strong day, so another A+.

Offensive line
TR:
Based on the identity of this offense, seems like we’re going to start off with pass protection with these guys on a weekly basis. Thought that aspect of their play was really good early in the game. Even when Tagovailoa was sacked late in the second quarter, it looked like more of a case of USM having good coverage on the play. As far as the run game goes, there wasn’t much in the way of wide running lanes, but there weren’t backs getting hit in the backfield on a consistent basis, either. Roughly half of USM’s tackle for loss total came after the game was decided. Deonte Brown back in the mix this week, Charlie. As for this one, I’ll go A- here.

CP: I thought it was a pretty good showing by the offensive line. After the game, Tua blamed the sack on himself, but that’s what you’d expect from a humble quarterback like Tagovailoa. Still, it was a sound showing for the big uglies up front. I thought Jedrick Wills, especially, had a good game at right tackle. But we’ve reached the point in the season where the starting lineup could change with Brown now eligible. We’ll see what happens next. As for this week, I’ll go with an A-.

CONTINUED FROM ABOVE
DEFENSE

Defensive line
Travis Reier:
The hits keep on coming up front, as DJ Dale left the game with a knee injury in the second quarter. First start for Justin Eboigbe at end and we continue to see a good bit of Phidarian Mathis, who forced a fumble that was recovered by Jordan Battle. Christian Barmore flashed again in the second half. Not sure what he does the other six days of the week, but he’s shown up pretty consistently on game days. USM averaged just 1.6 yards per carry in the game. Goes without saying that Dale’s status will be a major storyline for the upcoming week, but I said it anyway. It’s an A- here.

Charlie Potter:
Given that LaBryan Ray was already out of the lineup and Dale left it just before halftime, I thought Raekwon Davis and the young players did a nice job of both applying pressure and stopping the run. We saw a lot of Eboigbe and Byron Young in place of Ray, and Mathis played inside and out. The young guys have shown flashes, especially Barmore, and if they can string those flashes together, Alabama’s defensive line depth will be pretty scary. I’ll go with an A here.

Linebacker
TR
: With missed tackles and bad angles serving as the backdrop, the defense gave up a 21-yard run early. Allowed just 31 yards on the ground over the remaining three-plus quarters, so those guys shored things up pretty well. Still a little bit late and/or out of position at times, but combined totals of 11 tackles, including 2.5 for loss, and a sack for Shane Lee and Christian Harris were promising. Anfernee Jennings extended his sack streak to three games and Christopher Allen had 1.5 tackles for loss while working in place of Terrell Lewis. Don’t think the linebackers were so good in coverage, though, that opposing offenses won’t continue to look to isolate running backs and tight ends on those guys. They were down a couple of guys here, too, so I’ll go B+.

CP:
Yeah, the injuries serve as a caveat here, but I thought this was a bounce-back game for Harris. He didn’t play a whole lot because USM’s offense forced Alabama to play lot of dime, but when he was on the field in nickel, he played a little more under control. The solo tackle for loss in the second quarter was a good example of that. I thought Jennings turned in one of the better performances of the day, which was highlighted by a sack. Overall, I’ll give the ‘backers an A-.

Secondary
TR:
Two more takeaways by Alabama defensive backs, giving them nine through four games. Trevon Diggs played the ball perfectly on his second-quarter pick and Battle seems to have a knack for being in position to produce turnovers. Looked like the defensive staff was still trying to finalize some things in the nickel and dime packages, as we saw both Shyheim Carter (star) and Josh Jobe (right corner) in those looks. Jobe kept his rash of penalties going against USM, with his personal foul in the second quarter serving as UA’s lone infraction in the game. On a day in which UA held USM to 2 of 11 on third down, nice performance against a trio of productive wide receivers in Quez Watkins, Jaylond Adams and Jordan Mitchell. The Golden Eagles came in converting at a 51 percent clip. I thought the secondary was better in coverage than the linebackers, so I’ll go A- here.

CP:
Diggs’ time as a wide receiver seemed to pay off on that pick. He looked more like a wideout than a cornerback on that play. He also showed off some elite speed in chasing down Watkins and making a tackle short of the sticks. You’re right, the movement in the secondary continued as Carter started the game, but Jobe also received an opportunity to see the field. But Diggs, Patrick Surtain II, McKinney and Mayden have been the constants. Mayden led the team in tackles with eight, while McKinney put together yet another impressive game. I’ll go with an A.

Special teams

TR: I’ve seen a lot of injuries over the years but a hip flexor pull brought on by kicking the tee is a first for even me. It might have been funny if not for the fact that UA needs Will Reichard — with punting higher on the concern list than even place kicking. Speaking of which, kudos to Joseph Bulovas for coming on and handling extra points and kickoffs with aplomb. We wondered if Adams might be a handful in the return game but UA limited him to a modest 17 yards per kickoff return on three runbacks. Meanwhile, Jaylen Waddle had a 41-yard punt return in the fourth quarter and was this close to housing a couple on the day. Again, the punting game is a major concern as long as Reichard is sidelined. Think Saban will include Mike Bernier in the discussion moving forward, Charlie? I’ll go A- here.

CP: Bernier’s still around. We saw him warming up Saturday, but based on Saban’s comments ahead of this past game, I would still lean toward no. DeLong averaged 37.0 yards per punt with a long of 38 yards. That’s not the best, but when the coverage team only allows one yard to one of the nation’s top returners, you’ll take it. I’m with you that punting needs to improve, but with what happened to Reichard and in facing a player like Adams, I thought special teams got the job done against Southern Miss. It’s an A for me.

LINK ]Game balls for Alabama: Southern Miss By Charlie Potter
quote:

Alabama won its fourth game of the season Saturday with a 49-7 victory over Southern Miss. The Crimson Tide produced 514 yards of offense, while its defense allowed 226 yards to the Golden Eagles. Here, we hand out game balls to the best individual player performances in Alabama’s win.

Tua Tagovailoa
For the second week in a row, Tagovailoa threw five touchdown passes. Along with that, his 293 yards on 17-of-21 passing gave him a rating of 276.7. Now No. 5 on Alabama’s career passing yards list with 5,902 yards, Tagovailoa is putting together another spectacular year and now has 1,300 yards, 17 touchdowns and zero interceptions through the first four weeks of the season.

Henry Ruggs III

In a shocking twist, Ruggs did not score on his first reception of the game this week. But he did find the endzone on Catches 2 and 3. His first touchdown was 45 yards, while his second was a 74-yard score, which saw him slow down, turn around for the football and still outrun the USM defender. His second big game in a row, he caught four passes for 148 yards and two scores.

Jerry Jeudy

A week after he was held out of the end zone last week, Jeudy scored twice against the Golden Eagles on Saturday. The junior wide receiver caught touchdown passes of 17 and 20 yards to tie Ruggs for the team lead in that category. But Jeudy led the Crimson Tide in receptions (6) and targets (8) and finished in second place in yards (96) in the Week 4 non-conference game.

Najee Harris

Harris shined as a receiver a week ago, and he still showed off what he can do catching the ball out of the backfield by scoring a touchdown on a 5-yard reception. But Harris was even more productive on the ground, which has been a point of emphasis for Alabama. The running back rushed for 110 yards on 14 carries -- the second 100-yard rushing performance of his career.

Anfernee Jennings

With Terrell Lewis out resting a hyper-extended knee, Jennings was the only experienced player the Tide had as an edge-rusher. The redshirt junior didn’t let his team down, registering five tackles, one sack and one pass breakup. With the combination of injuries and young players forced into duty, Jennings’ experience and leadership are also extremely beneficial for Alabama.

Trevon Diggs

Diggs produced a couple of impressive plays Saturday. One was when he chased down speedy USM receiver Quez Watkins from behind and stopped him short of the sticks. He showed elite speed on that play. The other was when he picked off his second pass of the season and looked like a receiver in doing so. Overall, Diggs recorded three tackles from his cornerback position.

LINK ]Freshman report: Which true freshmen played vs. Southern Miss By Charlie PotterNo. 2 Alabama advanced to 4-0 (1-0 SEC) with its 49-7 win over Southern Miss on Saturday. And in the Week 4 non-conference game, a total of 17 true freshmen from Alabama’s No. 1-ranked 2019 recruiting class, according to the 247Sports Composite, saw the field at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Of the 17 freshmen, four of them started on defense in defensive linemen DJ Dale and Justin Eboigbe -- who made his first start -- linebacker Shane Lee and safety Jordan Battle. Two more entered the game during the first quarter in linebacker Christian Harris and Byron Young.

Here are all the freshmen that entered the game in Alabama’s Week 4 game against Southern Miss.

SHANE LEE

No. 5 ILB, No. 78 overall in 2019 rankings
Lee started at Mike linebacker for the fourth game in a row and recorded five tackles and one sack.

CHRISTIAN HARRIS

No. 6 ILB, No. 110 overall in 2019 rankings
Harris was the starting Will linebacker and recorded a career-best six tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss. A week after he split time with sophomore Ale Kaho, Harris handled the first-team duties on Saturday. The Baton Rouge, La., native also lined up on kickoffs and record one tackle there.

“We’ve got confidence in Christian Harris,” Alabama head coach Nick Saban said. “I thought he played better today. He just played in nickel. We played a lot of dime today when they were in four wideouts. Part of the reason for that is so it minimizes what he has to prepare for and what he had to do in a game. So, I thought he did a much better job today.”

JORDAN BATTLE
No. 2 S, No. 43 overall in 2019 rankings
Battle started as the sixth defensive back in UA’s dime package and was used on punt returns and kickoffs. The safety recorded three tackles, one tackle for loss and recovered one fumble.

JUSTIN EBOIGBE
No. 5 SDE, No. 62 overall in 2019 rankings
Eboigbe started at defensive end in place of LaBryan Ray (foot) and recorded three tackles.

EVAN NEAL

No. 1 OT, No. 7 overall in 2019 rankings
Neal started at left guard for the fourth game in a row.

DJ DALE
No. 18 DT, No. 254 overall in 2019 rankings
Dale started at nose guard for the fourth game in a row, but he left the contest with a patellar tendon strain but is expected to be OK, Saban said after the game. He did not record any stats.

WILL REICHARD
No. 1 K in 2019 rankings
Reichard handled extra points and kickoffs before leaving the game with a pulled hip flexor in the second quarter. “He may be questionable for this game,” Saban said of the Ole Miss game.

BYRON YOUNG

No. 8 DT, No. 77 overall in 2019 rankings
Young entered the game on the defensive line in the first quarter and recorded one tackle.

JOHN METCHIE

No. 40 WR, No. 275 overall in 2019 rankings
Metchie entered the game as a reserve wide receiver in the first quarter and played on special teams, including on punt returns. He caught one pass for -4 yards and recorded one tackle.

TAULIA TAGOVAILOA
No. 5 PRO, No. 180 overall in 2019 rankings
Tagovailoa entered the game at quarterback in the fourth quarter. He attempted and completed the first pass of his college career, which resulted in a 20-yard pickup to receiver Slade Bolden.

DEMARCCO HELLAMS
No. 8 S, No. 84 overall in 2019 rankings
Hellams appeared on kickoffs in the third quarter and lined up at safety in the fourth quarter. He did not record any stats.

KING MWIKUTA
No. 9 WDE, No. 158 overall in 2019 rankings
Mwikuta entered the game on kickoffs and at outside linebacker in the fourth quarter. He did not record any stats.

MARCUS BANKS
No. 13 CB, No. 127 overall in 2019 rankings
Banks entered the game on kickoffs and at cornerback in the fourth quarter. He did not record any stats.

SCOOBY CARTER

No. 9 CB, No. 91 overall in 2019 rankings
Carter entered the game at cornerback in the fourth quarter. He recorded one tackle.

JAHLEEL BILLINGSLEY
No. 11 TE, No. 308 overall in 2019 rankings
Billingsley entered the game at tight end in the third quarter. He did not record any stats.

DARRIAN DALCOURT
No. 11 OG, No. 177 overall in 2019 rankings
Dalcourt entered the game at center in the fourth quarter.

PIERCE QUICK

No. 7 OT, No. 40 overall in 2019 rankings
Quick blocked on the final extra point in the fourth quarter.

Instant Analysis: Monday By Travis Reier

20:51
Since 2008, BamaOnLine.com's Instant Analysis has been a staple of Crimson Tide football coverage. That won't change in 2019, as we'll continue to provide Alabama fans with insight and interaction fresh from Tuscaloosa.

As for items we touched on during the latest edition of IA, they included:
* Statuses of DJ Dale, Terrell Lewis, Will Reichard and Markail Benton.
* What's standing between Christian Barmore and a spot in the DL rotation?
* Deonte Brown returns to OG mix.
* Tons of interaction in the Q&A segment!
