Alabama won't have to worry about rat poison this year. ESPN already saying we are going to have a down year. We'll find out soon if that's true.

This is getting weird with Alfano. Didn’t see this coming from him. Seemed like he had his head on straight before he got to campus.

Freshman report: Which first-year players played vs. NMSU By Charlie Potter
quote:

No. 2-ranked Alabama advanced to 2-0 with its 62-10 win over New Mexico State on Saturday in the Crimson Tide’s home opener. And in its Week 2 non-conference game, a total of 17 true freshmen from Alabama’s No. 1-ranked signing class from the 2019 recruiting cycle, according to the 247Sports Composite, saw the field in their home debuts at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Last week, 14 freshmen played against Duke, and one week later, four more players entered the game for the Tide in tight end Jahleel Billingsley, offensive linemen Pierce Quick and Tanner Bowles and linebacker King Mwikuta. Quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa was the only freshman that participated in the Week 1 game in Atlanta that did not see the field against NMSU Saturday.

On top of the five players that started in Week 1, safety Jordan Battle was in the starting lineup this weekend at safety opposite of Xavier McKinney in Alabama’s defensive nickel formation.

Here are all the freshmen that entered the game in Alabama’s home opener in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

KEILAN ROBINSON
No. 15 RB, No. 244 overall in 2019 rankings
Robinson entered the game at running back in the third quarter and carried the ball five times for 80 yards and a touchdown. His 74-yard touchdown run gave Alabama a 62-7 lead with 13 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Robinson also lined up on kickoff return late in the game.

“We’ve been wanting to bring Keilan Robinson along because he’s the one guy that has juice that is a guy that’s a little different style of back than the other two guys that we play,” Alabama head coach Nick Saban said. “So, hopefully, he’ll gain some confidence from making a great, long run today, and that’ll help him and we can utilize his skillset in the future.”

JORDAN BATTLE

No. 2 S, No. 43 overall in 2019 rankings
Battle started the game at strong safety and went on to play on all four special teams units (punt return, punt, kickoff and kickoff return). He finished the home opener with five total tackles.

SHANE LEE
No. 5 ILB, No. 78 overall in 2019 rankings
Lee started at Mike linebacker for the second game in a row and recorded five tackles, including one tackle for loss. He also saw the field on special teams on kickoff returns early in the game.

DJ DALE

No. 18 DT, No. 254 overall in 2019 rankings
Dale started at nose guard and recorded two tackles and one quarterback hurry.

CHRISTIAN HARRIS

No. 6 ILB, No. 110 overall in 2019 rankings
Harris started opposite Lee at the Will linebacker spot and also recorded one tackle.

EVAN NEAL
No. 1 OT, No. 7 overall in 2019 rankings
Neal started at left guard for the second game in a row.

WILL REICHARD
No. 1 K in 2019 rankings
Reichard was Alabama’s starter on field goals and kickoffs and made the third and fourth field goal tries of his career from 48 and 49 yards out, respectively. He was a perfect 8-for-8 on extra points and all but one of his kickoffs went for a touchback. Reichard also jogged out for one punt late in the game after sophomore Skyler DeLong started the game and kicked a 39-yard punt

BYRON YOUNG
No. 8 DT, No. 77 overall in 2019 rankings
Young entered the game as a reserve defensive end in the third quarter and recorded three tackles.

DEMARCCO HELLAMS
No. 8 S, No. 84 overall in 2019 rankings
Hellams appeared on kickoffs in the second quarter and lined up in the slot on defense in the second half. He recorded three tackles and shared the credit for a sack.

KING MWIKUTA

No. 9 WDE, No. 158 overall in 2019 rankings
Mwikuta made his first appearance on kickoffs in the third quarter and later lined up at outside linebacker. He recorded three tackles.

SCOOBY CARTER
No. 9 CB, No. 91 overall in 2019 rankings
Carter entered the game at left cornerback in the fourth quarter. He recorded one tackle.

JOHN METCHIE

No. 40 WR, No. 275 overall in 2019 rankings
Metchie was a reserve wide receiver off the bench in the first quarter but did not record any stats(actually caught 1 pass for -3 yards). He also contributed on special teams, playing on some kickoffs and punt returns.

MARCUS BANKS

No. 13 CB, No. 127 overall in 2019 rankings
Banks entered the game on kickoffs in the second quarter. He did not record any stats.

DARRIAN DALCOURT

No. 11 OG, No. 177 overall in 2019 rankings
Dalcourt entered the game at center in the third quarter.

PIERCE QUICK

No. 7 OT, No. 40 overall in 2019 rankings
Quick entered the game at left guard in the third quarter

JAHLEEL BILLINGSLEY
No. 11 TE, No. 308 overall in 2019 rankings
Billingsley entered the game at tight end in the third quarter. He did not record any stats.

TANNER BOWLES
No. 19 OG, No. 290 overall in 2019 rankings
Bowles blocked for field goals in the third quarter.

Alabama running back Najee Harris (Photo: Stuart McNair, 247Sports)
Nick Saban still wants to see more from Alabama's running game By Charlie Potter
quote:

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- One of the main goals for Alabama between Weeks 1 and 2 of the 2019 season was to run the football with more success against New Mexico State than it did against Duke, which would take a combined effort from the team’s offensive line and running backs.

In large part due to two touchdown runs of 74 yards or more and another 25-yard scramble by quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, the Crimson Tide’s average jumped from 3.5 yards per carry to 9.9.

But head coach Nick Saban still wants to see better execution.

“I think we’ve still got to work on being able to run the ball a little bit more efficiently and effectively,” Saban said after the New Mexico State game. “I think it was better today. They did a lot of stunting, they were bringing the Star a lot, 5-man pressures to try to stop the run. But still, we’ve got to be able to block those things and be able to run the ball effectively.”

Last week, Alabama (2-0) was without its top-two running backs for the first quarter of the Duke game. In Week 2, starting center Chris Owens did not play with an undisclosed injury, and the No. 2 center, Emil Ekiyor (knee), was sidelined. So, guard Landon Dickerson got the start.

“It was good to get them some experience,” Saban said. “I think I made the statement that I thought we had seven guys that were starters on the offensive line that we felt good about, but we had to play with five today and a freshman center (Darrian Dalcourt), who we put in the game, and I think he did OK. That’s what led to that. Simple math, guys get injured.”

Dickerson started the first game of the season at right guard and figures to be a key cog in the position group’s plan going forward. He thought the O-line played well but still needs to improve.

“It’s obviously good to have a team win,” Dickerson said. “There’s a lot of things we’ve got to improve on. I think going into conference play, heading into next week, we’ve really got to clean up a lot of the details, but I like where this team is. I like where this team is headed.

“... I felt like there were times where maybe a couple of guys were on a different page or we didn’t get here or we were one step behind, that kind of deal. But I think we still have a lot of room for improvement there, and I think once we get it going, it will pick up a lot.”

Junior running back Najee Harris earned the first start of his career and rushed for 68 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries (5.7 yards per carry). Fellow junior Brian Robinson also saw the field earlier than last week and rushed fo 57 yards on 11 attempts (5.2 ypc). But outside of a 19-yard run by Harris, the top-two runners only produced 50 yards on 14 carries (3.6 ypc) in the first half.

This came against a lowly NMSU team that allowed 214.5 rushing yards per game in 2018.

A 74-yard touchdown run by freshman Keilan Robinson helped push Alabama’s team rushing averaged to nearly 10 yards per play, and the freshman finished with 80 yards on five carries.

A week after wanting to see UA’s backs run the football a certain way on certain plays, Saban was asked to evaluate the group. The overall numbers improved, but he still wants to see more.

“I thought it was a little better today. I thought they hit it up in there a little bit better,” Saban said. “We’ve been wanting to bring Keilan Robinson along because he’s the one guy that has juice that is a guy that’s a little different style of back than the other two guys that we play -- really, the other three guys that we play. So, hopefully, he’ll gain some confidence from making a great, long run today, and that’ll help him and we can utilize his skillset in the future.”

Grading Alabama’s 62-10 win over New Mexico State By Mike Rodak
quote:

Alabama entered Saturday’s game against New Mexico State favored by 55 points. It was the Tide’s first meeting with a non-Power 5 opponent since The Citadel last November, a contest remembered for a sluggish start and tied score at halftime.

The Aggies never posed such a threat to Alabama but still managed to hold the Tide’s offensive starters to consecutive three-and-out possessions in the first quarter. Alabama’s backups also drew the postgame ire of Nick Saban for going three-and-out twice in the fourth quarter and allowing New Mexico State to hold the ball for nearly the final eight minutes.
Here is a phase-by-phase look at Alabama’s performance in their 62-10 win that improved their record to 2-0:

Passing offense: B
Tua Tagovailoa (16 of 24 for 227 yards and three touchdowns) played the entire first half and the first drive of the second half. His passing efficiency (187.4) and Total QBR (88.5) were both the fifth-lowest since he became the starter at the beginning of last season. His accuracy, touch and overall connection with his receivers left something to be desired at points Saturday, especially during a stretch late in the first quarter when four of five throws fell incomplete. Tagovailoa was able to bail the Tide out of a pair of third-and-long situations in New Mexico State territory during the first half that both led to touchdowns. One third-and-11 strike went to Jerry Jeudy for a 23-yard score, one of three receiving touchdowns for Jeudy, tying a single-game school record.
Backup Mac Jones entered in the third quarter and played the remainder of the game, completing 5 of 9 passes for 58 yards and one touchdown to Jeudy. Jones had less success once the Tide’s top receivers came out of the game, missing 6-foot-6 receiver Tyrell Shavers on a third-and-5 late in the third quarter and completing passes short of the sticks on third downs in the fourth quarter.

Rushing offense: B-
Alabama’s 318 rushing yards were their most since a win over Ole Miss in 2017 but overall the running game did not pass the eye test. Of those 318 yards and four rushing touchdowns, 174 and three touchdowns came on three plays: a 75-yard backward swing pass from Tagovailoa to Henry Ruggs on the game’s first play, a 25-yard scramble by Tagovailoa in the second quarter and a 74-yard scamper by freshman Keilan Robinson late in the third quarter. Alabama gained 144 yards on its other 29 rushing attempts, a 5.0 yards-per-carry average that was weighed down by 10 carries of three yards or less in non-short yardage situations. Six of those runs came in the first half by either Najee Harris or Brian Robinson Jr. when the Tide’s starting offense was on the field, which should be concerning against an Aggies defense that ranked 125th against the run last season.

I think we’ve still got to work on running the ball a little bit more efficiently and effectively,” Saban said.

Injuries and shifting along the offensive line might have played a role Saturday. With starting center Chris Owens and backup Emil Ekiyor both out, right guard Landon Dickerson slid inside and Matt Womack entered the lineup.

Rushing defense: B+
The least concerning phase for much of Saturday’s game was the run defense. New Mexico State gained only one first down rushing through the first three quarters. That changed in the fourth quarter when Aggies running back Josh Foley broke a 22-yard run, New Mexico State’s longest of the day. On their next possession, the Aggies ran the ball 11 times in a 13-play stretch and gained four first downs on the ground. That sequence seemed to irritate Saban, who said after the game, “I think we got really sloppy at the end of the game when we played a lot of 2s. I was not pleased with the way they executed. … The defense never stopped them the last [eight] minutes of the game.”

Passing defense: A-
The one major hiccup of the afternoon for Alabama’s pass defense came on a 44-yard third-quarter completion from Aggies quarterback Josh Adkins to receiver Tony Nicholson. Alabama cornerback Trevon Diggs remained on the field after the play and was carried to the medical tent, where he later emerged after experiencing cramps. That big gain set up a 4-yard scoring pass from Adkins, the Aggies’ only touchdown of the game and a mark against an Alabama red-zone defense that did not allow a touchdown to Duke on two trips inside the 20-yard line in the opener. Outside of his 44-yard strike, Adkins threw for only 117 yards in the blowout and was intercepted once, by Patrick Surtain II.

Special teams: A-

Freshman kicker Will Reichard did not have luck on his side when he had both of his field goals in the opener bounce off the uprights. There was no question about either of his attempts Saturday, from 48 and 49 yards. The first two successful field goals of his college career helped earn him the trust of Tagovailoa and fans, who loudly cheered the scores. Reichard also boomed nine of his 11 kickoffs for touchbacks and hit all eight of his extra point attempts. The only significant strike against Alabama’s special teams came on the Aggies’ first punt, which was returned by Jaylen Waddle 77 yards for a touchdown but called back on an illegal block in the back penalty.

Alabama among five SEC teams in top nine of new polls By Matt Zenitz | mzenitz@al.com
quote:

Alabama is far from the only SEC team in the top-10 of the new polls.

In both the AP poll and the Amway Coaches Poll, which were both released Sunday afternoon, it’s the Crimson Tide again at No. 2 and then four other SEC teams ranked in the top nine.

Georgia is still No. 3 in both polls. It’s then LSU, which is up from No. 6 to No. 4 in the AP poll and from No. 6 to No. 5 in the coaches poll after its 45-38 win over then-No. 9 Texas.

After that, it’s Auburn, which moved up from No. 10 to No. 8 in the AP poll and from No. 12 to No. 10 in the coaches poll.

Florida
is the other SEC team in the top nine of both polls. The Gators are ranked No. 8 in the coaches poll and No. 9 in the AP poll.

Clemson is again at No. 1 in both polls. The Tigers received 60 of the 63 first-place votes for the coaches poll. The Tide got the other three first-place votes.

Alabama Football: Saban not disappointed but not pleased after NMSU game by Ronald Evans
quote:

It can be fairly said Alabama football fans are never pleased. Neither is Nick Saban and he wasn’t after the win over New Mexico State.

For the record, Alabama football coach, Nick Saban also said he was not disappointed. For anyone questioning if age has slowed Saban, forget it. With eight seconds to go Saturday afternoon, the Aggies were threatening to score.

The Aggies subbed, giving the Tide a chance to make a defensive sub. Then they subbed again and the Tide defense was not given another chance to sub a defender. Saban sprinted down the sideline and onto the edge of the field to call a timeout. The Aggies failed to score. The final score was 62-10, Alabama Crimson Tide.

In post-game comments, Nick Saban said he was not disappointed but he was not pleased. He was talking about more than having to call a late timeout to get his backup defense adjusted.

Two very good things happened in Bryant-Denny Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Alabama Crimson Tide got to go very, make that VERY deep into its roster. As importantly, there were no injuries in the game. Starting center, Chris Owens was out for the game and Trevon Diggs went out during the game. Diggs’ problem was cramps in the oven caused by a heat index of 106 degrees.

Nick Saban also stated in his post-game review that Antonio Alfano, who did not play, is going through some “disciplinary” issues. It was already known that Alfano has missed some practice because of a serious medical problem for a family member.

It will be all over Twitter that Saban was a mite testy when asked about playing lesser opponents. He should be. No coach in college football has argued more strongly for Power Five teams to play only Power Five teams – and for adding more SEC conference games.

What was learned from the game?[/b]
A knee-jerk response is not much. What can be learned in such a mismatch? There will be more time to assess later, but one thought could not be stifled while watching the game – just how deep in this Alabama football team? At some position groups, as in too many, it could be the answer is not deep enough.
As Coach BOOM said after Sat's blow out of Charleston Southern, "We will learn a lot more next week" Check back in with Bama Hammer often. We’ll have more to say about this game and lots to say about opening the SEC conference slate on the road Saturday.

Alabama opens as three-touchdown favorite over South Carolina By Charlie Potter
quote:

The betting line is out for this weekend’s matchup between Alabama and South Carolina, and the second-ranked Crimson Tide is a three-touchdown betting favorite over its second opponent.

Alabama opened as a 21-point favorite over South Carolina, according to Circa Sports, the sportsbook at the Golden Gate Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. The line has since moved to -22 on Sunday.

The Crimson Tide will open SEC play on the road when it travels to Columbia, S.C., to face the Gamecocks at 2:30 p.m. CT on CBS. Alabama leads the all-time series with South Carolina, 10-4, but the Gamecocks won the last meeting in 2010 when UA last traveled to Columbia, 35-21.

That will not be the last time you are reminded of that game this week.

South Carolina opened the 2019 season with a 24-20 loss to North Carolina but convincingly defeated Charleston Southern, 72-10, this past weekend. The Gamecocks will be without their starting quarterback Jake Bentley because of a foot injury. In his place behind center will be Ryan Hilinski, who threw for 282 yards, two touchdowns and one interception against Charleston Southern.

South Carolina will host Alabama in the third week of the season, but the Tide is just one of the many challenges that await Will Muschamp and company. The Gamecocks play North Carolina and Clemson in non-conference play, as well as Georgia, Florida and Texas A&M in SEC games.

“Everybody knows what kind of schedule we’ve got,” senior offensive lineman Donell Stanley said. “We’ve got a schedule that can make us or break us. We just have to have the mindset every week of coming out and wanting to dominate, and if you aren’t with it, you need to leave.”

Alabama running back Najee Harris rushed for 68-yards of 12 carries against New Mexico State Grading the Alabama Crimson Tide vs. New Mexico State Kyle Henderson • BamaInsider @Rivals_Kyle After each game of the season, Pro-Football Focus distributes player grades for each college football team. Pro-Football Focus is a network composed of former coaches, players, and NFL Scouts and each week at BamaInsider.com, our staff will provide the grade outs on the Crimson Tide

Quarterback Grades - Observations:
For a second straight week, Tua Tagovailoa has graded out very well and has been highly efficient under Steve Sarkisian's offense. Tagovailoa is 42 of 55 passing for 563-yards with a 7/0 touchdown to interception ratio, and his rating entering week three is 204.3. Back-up quarterback Mac Jones threw nine passes on the day and was graded out at 59.3, however, he did fire a laser of a pass for a touchdown in week two. On the season, Jones is 9 of 14 passing for 89-yards with 1 touchdown.

Running Back Grades - Observations:
Week over week, Alabama's team rushing grade improved over 10 points jumping from a grade of 68.5 against Duke to a 79.6 against New Mexico State. The run game has not looked overpowering through two weeks, but Alabama still managed to rush for over 300-yards in week two and as you can see the running backs all had above-average grades in week two.

Najee Harris ran the football 12 times for 68-yards with one touchdown and averaged 5.7-yards per pop, which college program in the nation would not want that sort of production? Brian Robinson had 11 carries for 57-yards, an average of 5.2-yards per carry, and usually anything over 3.5-yards per carry is worth getting excited about, so maybe the running game is moving in the right direction after all.

Receiver Grades - Observations: The Alabama receivers continue to shine and record high grades which is no surprise considering the talent pool. Henry Ruggs III led the group in week two with an overall offensive grade of 83.7, followed by Jerry Jeudy who had an overall offensive grade of 78.9. Ruggs III and Jeudy were targeted a total of 17 times against New Mexico State and the duo accounted for 244-yards of offense and four touchdowns.

As Saban said during his press conference, a lot of the twos did not play very well and look at the grades by the underclassmen outside of sophomore Jaylen Waddle. Tight end Jaleel Billingsley, John Metchie, and RS-sophomore Tyrell Shavers need to show some major improvement if they want to continue to get playing time.

Will mine the interwebs, see if I can find the Line Grades without violating copywrite/pay for view agreements will update or place in a separate post when found. for chat about Neal... still a good solid F for the game altho improved about 4 points in total and pass blk got a bit better, doesnt even measure up to an F and since they dont give G's or H's.. well guess he gets an F across the boards.

The sad thing is that Lewis is going to get held like what is happening in that picture all season and it will literally never, ever be called.
