He has done more to promote/sell the program in the 18 hours since his hire than Grant did in six years. If I had known what a recluse Grant was when we made that hire, I wouldn't have been near as excited.

Oh for sure. You could tell how well liked he is there from the Twitter response once he took the job.

Man I love this hire. He wants to be here...he is really likeable....has NBA experience. Has connections to Texas AAU circuit.

Biggest question mark is recruiting and I think he will do well. Knows what it takes to make it to the NBA. Has the perspective of an nba player...as well as an NBA coach. Which I think is very valuable. By all accounts he is very well liked. Judging from everyone at ESPN's reaction they all seem to love him. Players will recognize the name and love playing for a guy like him.

Like a poster said above he is actually going to promote the program which is great.

People on the rant keep saying things like we got a coach nobody wanted for 2.5 years blah blah blah thats so stupid to me. It's not like he has been knocking at every programs doorstep looking for a job. You didn't really see his name come up when programs were looking for coaches...He was an analyst on espn. That's a pretty sweet job. Also pays well too.

Using their NBA career as a reason as to why he will fail is the stupidest thing. You know who didn't do that well in the NBA? Calipari. Saban didn't do well in the NFL. Pete Carrol didn't do well his first stint in the NFL. It's a completely different game but the principle is the same. Nobody wants to fail...but for some people it can be the best thing to ever happen to them as a coach. It can be a huge learning experience to make you step back and reevaluate things.

Can't exactly say Johnson was a total failure in the NBA though. 440-254 record with going to the finals and a coach of the year.

The rant says its a bad hire.....so it's probly a good hire lol.

I was so pessimistic after we didn't get Marshall...but damn am I excited for Bama basketball now.

Yeah, I really like the hire as well. Marshall would have been a big hire but honestly I'm a bit more excited about Johnson simply because I like him as a person a whole lot more.

I would guess that recruiting is going to be his strong suit.

The question mark may be more around learning and adjusting to what works differently in the college game and developing some of the type players we've traditionally had in the area that are more athletic than polished players.

the nets job was a cluster that he stepped into. they went 12 and 70 the year before he got there. he won 24 games the next season, about the same the next year, and was .500 when they fired him the following season. in the nba you pretty much get no say over your personnel, you are stuck with what the gm gives you. college you at least get to recruit players you think will work in your system

I read that Buck Johnson could be on the staff. Very high chance of it.

I know he's well connected to a lot of the upcoming recruits and has a talented son as well, but I don't want a guy who hasn't coached on the college or NBA level. Making him director of operations would be a good idea though.

Amazing homerun of a hire.

Reminiscent of losing out on Rich Rodriguez and ending up with Saban!

He is perfect for the college game. Kids will want to play for him as well.
