It all leads back to Grant, but I'm not sure what you're seeing that I'm not. We have had a lot of great defensive players, but offensively we haven't had that much talent.

I agree with everything you said. I wasn't saying we suck because of his demeanor. It's just another thing to complain about. It adds on to my frustrations of how our offense hasn't changed in 5 years. We lack creativity and Grant had a chance to change coaches over the offseason and he promoted Pettway and kept Pujol. He's obviously too stubborn to change.

anybody who thinks we've had a lot of offensive talent...I don't even know what to say to that. not an excuse though.

on board with all that. wasn't trying to jump you, just always on guard about bama bball cuz we get a lot of uninformed whining from the football fans in our fanbase. you know what's up though.

a shame it's come to this, really liked grant at first. still kind of do as a dude, but as a coach, I have no confidence left.

I think we have had talent...but none of them were developed well enough by the time they reached campus to overcome our staff's ineptitude. Even mediocre players should improve a little over the course of their time in the program. Cooper has gotten worse. Randolph is still really inconsistent. Lacey didn't get much better. Jacobs is still the same guy he was as a freshman, but 30 pounds lighter. Moussa never improved.

Carl and Retin are the only two guys I have seen significant improvement out of, and Carl just went from a waste of space to occasionally doing a serviceable job of being tall. He's still one of the worst bigs I have ever seen in a college basketball game.

ETA: And Releford has become a much better 3pt shooter.

Jacobs has improved the most of anyone. Coop and Randolph seem to have regressed

I agree that the development of our post players has been pretty bad which is why I think Pujol should be replaced, but our guard development has been solid outside of Cooper and you just can't fix his mental issues through coaching.

He's improved his rebounding a little, but that is because of his improved conditioning. He's always had the left-handed hook, but has yet to find a move to go to on his right. He's still a liability defensively.

player development is definitely a problem, but I will continue strongly disagreeing with us having had a lot of offensive talent on grant's teams, not even close by division 1 standards. development is important, but we've been especially raw for years. we've had no knockdown shooter, still don't. no distributing point guard, still dont. no skilled post player, ditto. no slasher who can finish besides releford who's not even 6 feet tall. I mean, what else is there? we haven't had shite, which is all on grant. certain coaches would have been able to get more results on offense than grant, but even if we had coach k, we wouldn't get it done with this bunch. I strongly believe that. we've got a team of role players and no scorers. and we're still woefully undermanned in the front court.

nothing pisses me off more than Jacobs refusal to use his right hand. then he tries every now and again and I understand why. happened a couple times today.

I just haven't seen it. I think what you are seeing as development is the effect of experience and becoming the guys who are relied on to score points. I don't think we have seen much improvement in terms of basketball skills though. We rarely pick up an assist on a basket, we commit a lot of turnovers from bad passes and over-dribbling, Releford is the only guy who can shoot...

Guy needs an absolute change in philosophy/style. I mean, just run the damn floor for 40 minutes if we're gonna lose anyway. At least it might be entertaining.

in his defense, we've won the 3rd most games in the sec since he's been here so it's not like it's fair to say "we're gonna lose anyway" as you say. not even really defending him here as I wish we would go more uptempo as well - makes sense for a guard heavy team like we have. I'm just saying, it's not like we've ever bottomed out like many other programs do so the idea that he should just overhaul everything and start over doesn't really match the facts on the ground. bit of an irrational overreaction.

if anything, this makes the whole thing more frustrating though. feels like we're stuck in mediocrity.

Anthony Grant could be sliding off a cliff in a car with no brakes and not even get his adrenaline up.
complete representation of the entire team.

I just don't think they care.

I know I'm beating my head against the wall here but I just don't understand how somebody could watch us play and think effort was the problem.

The fact that he makes more money than 95% of all college basketball coaches is a goddamn joke and he should be fricking ashamed to accept his paychecks.

If I was Grant I'd state until Alabama makes the Tourney I'll donate 50% of my paycheck to local charity.

I agree. They play hard, they just aren't a very good basketball team. You can give as much effort as you want, but it won't fix the problems associated with not having a clear offensive system, having a couple of undersized 2 guards playing the 1, never hitting anything from outside, and Nick Jacobs being your best front court player. I would love to know how trying harder is supposed to overcome any of those issues, much less all of them.

Effort was the problem in the first half. It was also the problem in December last year. However, we do normally play hard and never quit. Like you and Robot have already said, our main problem is no offensive system and no real post player. You would have thought he could have recruited a capable big man or two by year 5. I guess that's expecting too much.
