For people that appreciate not having to dive through megathreads to find huge news such as new coaches and coordinator hires:

Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer is expected to round out his on-field coaching staff with a Group of 5 offensive coordinator. Georgia Southern OC and quarterbacks coach Bryan Ellis is expected to be hired as the Crimson Tide’s tight ends coach, BamaOnline has learned.

Ryan Fowler of Tide 100.9 was first to report the hire.

Ellis has spent the last two seasons at Georgia Southern. In 2023, the Eagles fielded a high-flying offense, ranking in the nation’s top 30 in completion percentage and passing offense.

Before returning to his home state, he spent three years at Western Kentucky. He was first the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 2019-20 before coaching WKU’s inside receivers in 2021. He was also at Western Kentucky from 2014-16, where he worked as an offensive quality control staffer before moving up to running backs and receivers.

Ellis spent the 2017-18 seasons at USC, where he was first an offensive assistant before being promoted to quarterback coach in 2018. He was tasked with developing the successor to Sam Darnold – the No. 3 overall draft pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. A former quarterback at UAB, Ellis began his coaching career at his alma mater as a graduate assistant in 2012-13.

Ellis doesn’t have experience coaching tight ends but joins DeBoer’s staff at Alabama after a bit of shuffling. Nick Sheridan, who was originally hired as the tight ends coach, is expected to be promoted to offensive coordinator and coach quarterbacks after the departure of Ryan Grubb, who left for the Seattle Seahawks. None of the new hires have been announced.

Ellis will now handle the tight ends while Sheridan oversees the quarterbacks as well as the offense as a whole. Kapilovic will replace Huff in a like-for-like swap.

Ellis comes to Alabama after spending the past two seasons as Georgia Southern’s offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach. Prior to that, he spent three seasons at Wester Kentucky, serving as the offensive coordinator/quarterbacks from in 2019-20 before coaching inside receiver in 2021. Those three years served as his second stint with the Hilltoppers as he previously served at Western Kentucky from 2014-16 here he served as an offensive quality control staffer before coaching, running backs and later serving as the passing-game coordinator while coaching receivers.

In between his two stints at Western Kentucky, Ellis spent two seasons at Southern California where he served as an offensive analyst in 2017 before becoming the Trojans quarterbacks coach the following year. He played a role in developing former USC quarterback Sam Darnold into the No. 3 overall draft pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Ellis, a Macon, Georgia native, played quarterback at UAB from 2007-11. He got his coaching start as a graduate assistant at his alma mater from 2012-13

Bryan* Ellis. I like this hire a lot, as the OC at Georgia Southern they’ve had the #13 and the #4 passing offenses in cfb the last two seasons.

in 2021 Georgia Southern ran the triple option and had the 124th ranked passing offense in the country. Ellis was hired the next season 2022, and in his first year there they had the #4 passing offense in the country.

124 to 4 is a huge jump to say the least.

Ellis was also the OC for Western Kentucky in 2021, they had the #1 passing offense in the country. Their qb that year, Bailey Zappe threw 62 tds and 11 ints, he had 6,000 passing yards.

I think most would be ecstatic had we hired Ellis as OC instead of Sheridan. A little surprised we offered him a job as TE coach and that he agreed to come here as TE coach when he’s one of the best OC’s in cfb. Hard to view it as anything but a big positive for our offense though. Im sure he and DeBoer end up collaborating a lot on the offense, he may even be promoted to OC at some point.

Sheridan was the TE coach, he could always go back to doing that say if Ellis is promoted to OC after this season.
