Bama wins 5-3. Not playing well on defense.

Maddie has improved at third base substantially over the last few weeks. Was a bit surprised to see Kilfoyl batting today after a ‘nagging injury’ kept her out the last several games. If she’s well enough to hit I’m guessing she’s well enough to pitch. Louisiana is a top 15 team so a couple of wins this weekend would be somewhat comforting heading into the last two weeks of SEC regular season play. The team lost their mind (defensively) in the 5th inning.

Savannah has been (for the most part) solid defensively at second base. She’s a sophomore who did not see a lot of playing time last year and if Dowling was not hurt, she would be in a backup role this year. She’s been tagged with 2 errors to date and has had some untimely bobbles that were not tagged as errors. She has also made some fantastic plays in her short time at second base. Yesterday in the 5th inning, everyone seemed to lose their minds (including senior Tow; graduate Clark; junior Fouts). She definitely needs to up her batting ( .273 on a team that’s averaging .302) but she’s currently got a better average than Claire and Maddie (admittedly not a good measuring stick). There has been some ballpark chatter by the negaMurphys of moving Alexis to the infield* (where she apparently played at Oregon) and maybe Kayla Davis or Kat Grill to the outfield. Murphy has a juggling act on his hands for the rest of the season. Didn’t fully appreciate how much Claire’s leadership would be missed in the infield when she went down. I doubt we would have seen the same 5th inning debacle that we saw yesterday. Happy to get a W out of it. Let’s get another W today! Roll Tide!

*clarifying that this proposed move would be Mack replacing Clark in the infield and not Woodard

I did not realize Alexis Mack played infield at Oregon. I seems like a reasonable move to try her at SS since her BA is higher than Clark's defense might also improve. Moving Kat Grill to RF and KB Sides to LF would would be an offensive improvement but I wonder about the affect on defense. Just my two cents.

Kat played right field (and Kayla to a lesser extent) after Jenna went down with the knee injury and KB was still in a boot. Jenna must not be ready given her sparse appearances pinch hitting and pinch running since her return. On the surface it seems reasonable to perhaps try moving things around but Murphy sees them in practice a lot more than I do so I’m trusting he’s fielding what he believes to be the best line up. Can’t afford anymore injuries.

Side note: in last night’s press conference he was reading off some pitching stats - a la Coach Oats. Second press conference in a row where he’s done that (the other was around the batting order of players). Perhaps a step in that direction?

Bama wins 5-1. Goodman pitched well and was relieved by Fouts for the last three innings. Jenna Johnson relieved Alexis Mack in LF and batted once. She might be ready to play more since her injury recovery is apparently progressing well. This might allow Murphy to make some lineup moves.

Savannah had an inside the park home run too - not a frequent occurrence in softball. She hit it to the wall and was rounding 3rd base by the time they threw it toward the catcher. Motoring!
