Alabama Gymnastics Travels to Arkansas to Open Conference Slate

The No. 8 Alabama gymnastics team will open its Southeastern Conference schedule against the No. 16 Arkansas Razorbacks Friday night at 7:30 CT in Barnhill Arena. The contest will be the Crimson Tide's first road meet of the season.

Alabama and Arkansas both won their season openers during week one of the 2023 season. The Crimson Tide posted the second-highest score for a season opener in program history, scoring a 196.975 to defeat the Michigan State Spartans. Alabama senior Luisa Blanco won the all-around with a 39.575, combining with fellow senior Makarri Doggette to win a share of every event title in the matchup.
The meet will be broadcast live on SEC Network.

Head Coach Ashley Johnston said
"This week is about being aggressive and not holding back. I feel like we did a good job week one of committing to our approach and all the little things that help us be successful. Now it's important that we don't compete cautiously, but we go big with confidence in those opportunities."

A win on the road for the ladies but also a step back. Gotta clean some stuff up in a hurry - Florida comes to town next week.

This is a different SEC than 10 years ago. We need to have regular 197's, hopefully closer to 198's. Have hope for the future but could be similar this year

Our freshman class seems like they are or will be pretty good though.

Score just under 196.5 wont cut it as others have said. I dont know how to find national rankings on gymnastics but this would drop us. I was channel surfing and was watching some of the UF Vs AU match and I think someone for UF got 2 perfect 10's

that is after 1 meet so our new average should drop us.

5 of 8 SEC teams that had meets last night had higher scores then Bama

I wouldn’t read too much into the rankings before week 8 or comparing scores to other teams with different judges. These judges were scoring waaay lower than similar or worse routines at other meets. We had an off night but still put together some good routines and got another freshman some experience. Going to have to find landings to hang with Florida though.

Our girls are learning a new coach and vice versa so it'll take a minute for both parties to get comfortable with one another.

what does a new coach have to do with doing their routines. It is not like a FB of BB coach who has a new offense you are trying to learn. Duh
