Canon Claycomb’s Clutch Comeback Falls Just Short in Extra Holes in Drama-Filled Final Round at the NCAA Bryan Regional
Claycomb rallies to finish in fifth overall, force a four-way playoff, while Thomas Ponder places 39th overall
Alabama's Canon Claycomb rallied throughout Wednesday's final round of the 2022 NCAA Men's Golf Bryan Regional, forcing a four-man playoff to determine the top individual finisher on a non-advancing team before falling just short. Claycomb closed the event in a five-way tie for fifth overall with a 3-under total of 213 (72-70-71), while teammate Thomas Ponder tied for 39th with a 222 (73-73-76).
The dramatic conclusion to the three-day, 54-hole event was set up when Claycomb birdied No. 17 to create a four-way tie alongside TCU's Aymeric Laussot, SMU's Noah Goodwin and Oregon State's Carson Barry. All four golfers finished with identical totals of three-under par.
However, Claycomb would go on to bogey the first extra hole and was eliminated from playoff contention. Barry would go on to defeat Goodwin and advance to the NCAA Championships next week.

Alabama Will Begin 2022 NCAA Women’s Golf Championships Friday
The University of Alabama women's golf team has reached its final destination of the season, competing at the 2022 NCAA Women's Golf Championships at the Grayhawk Golf Club Raptor Course (par 72, 6,399 yards) in Scottsdale, Ariz., May 20-25. Alabama will tee off on the 10th tee for the first round Friday at 2:25 p.m. CT, alongside hosts Arizona State and Virginia.
The tournament appearance marks the Crimson Tide's 16th all-time, while 15 of those have come under head coach Mic Potter. During that span, the Tide has produced one team national championship (2012) and one individual national championship (2015, Emma Talley). The Tide enjoyed a runner-up performance, in both stroke play and match play, in 2018.
Alabama is the ninth seed in a field of 24 teams this season, which features a league-record nine Southeastern Conference teams. Those 24 teams and their seeds are as follows:
Stanford
Oregon
South Carolina
Wake Forest
San Jose State
Oklahoma State
Arizona State
Virginia
Alabama
Florida State
USC
Texas
LSU
UCLA
Baylor
Auburn
Arkansas
Texas A&M
Michigan
Georgia
TCU
Mississippi State
Vanderbilt
Purdue
Alabama has met 20 of its 23 opponents this season, garnering a 35-21 record against those teams in 2021-22. UA has not met San Jose State, Oklahoma State nor top-seeded Stanford.
The Crimson Tide will compete in its warmest temperatures all season this week, as Scottsdale is projecting between 93-101 degrees with sunny and clear skies Friday through Wednesday.
FROM HEAD COACH MIC POTTER
"The team is very excited to have the opportunity to return to Grayhawk Golf Club and compete for the NCAA Championship. My sense is that we feel more comfortable on this golf course than we did last year, having played a couple of practice rounds this past January. All of our ladies have shown steady improvement this spring, so I look forward to seeing what we can accomplish this week."
