Benedetta Moresco Crowned 2022 SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year

Since 2010, Alabama has produced three SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year recipients for a combined six honors

University of Alabama women's golfer Benedetta Moresco has been crowned the 2022 Southeastern Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year, it was announced by the league office Friday. The sophomore has a 4.0 grade-point average as a food and nutrition major, while she has been selected to the President's List and the SEC Academic Honor Roll every semester in school.

Moresco is coming off a fourth-place finish at the 2022 Augusta National Women's Amateur in early April, where she was one of just three players in the field to turn in at least two rounds under par.

Didn’t realize the men were so close to being ineligible for post season play….

Alabama Begins Play at SEC Men’s Golf Championships Wednesday

The Crimson Tide will compete in 54 holes of stroke play, with the top eight teams advancing to match play

The Alabama Crimson Tide is set to begin postseason play when it competes at the 2022 Southeastern Conference Men's Golf Championships. The tournament will be contested Wednesday through Sunday, April 20-24, in Sea Island, Ga., on the par-70, 7,005-yard Sea Island Golf Club's Seaside Course.

The five-day event features both stroke play and match play competitions, beginning with 54 holes of stroke play from all 14 teams, with 18 holes contested on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. After the conclusion of stroke play, the top eight teams will advance to match play quarterfinals. Both the quarterfinal and semifinal matches will be held Saturday, followed by the championship match Sunday on SEC Network.

With a head-to-head record of 46-45-1 on the season, the Crimson Tide will have some added pressure to keep its record at.500 or better in order to maintain eligibility for NCAA Regional play which will be held May 15-17. That means Alabama would need to advance to match play to be considered for NCAA postseason competition.

Is it poor recruiting? Or have our previous assistants leaving hurt us as far as development as well?

It seems like we are recruiting fine, but our guys tend to go pro a lot earlier now than they used to. If they are any good they turn pro their sophomore year it seems. Hard to get consistency when there is that much turnover

Wouldn’t be surprised if this sophomore turned pro after this season:

Dead last after round 2. Currently 23 strokes behind 8th place (which is the cutoff to continue play after tomorrow). 35 strokes back from first place. I know there’s no crying in baseball, but is it allowed in golf?

I don't know if it's ever going to get better. It has been a downward spiral for the last 9 years. I hope the new golf improvements we are making will make a difference

This is ridiculous... They lost the national championship match like 3 years ago to a stacked Oklahoma State team and 2 guys left after and are now on the PGA TOUR! They also finished 2nd in the SEC last year. It's a down year but we are reloading next season with 2 top 10 HS kids including the US JR AM champ. relax

Yes you're right, I don't know how I forgot about that season where we lost to Ok State. My apologies. I was thinking 10 years ago we were dominating all the tournaments we were in with once in a generation players. I shouldn't expect that every year, so I admit that was short-sighted. In saying that, No i will not "relax". I have a passion and I will not apologize for that. I will apologize for when I get things wrong though.

Alabama Concludes Play at the SEC Men’s Golf Championships

The Crimson Tide finished 14th overall, failed to make the match play portion of this year’s event

The University of Alabama men's golf team closed play at the 2022 Southeastern Conference Men's Golf Championships Friday, finishing the stroke play portion in 14th overall with a team total of 871 (290-292-289).

The Crimson Tide was led for a second consecutive round by Charlie Nikitas, who recorded a 1-under par 69 Friday for Alabama's low round of the tournament. Thomas Ponder also played well in round three, finishing at 1-over par 71. The pair led UA as they finished tied for 42nd overall with matching scores of 5-over par 215s.

The top-eight teams from stroke play advanced to the match play portion of the championship, which will tee off Saturday morning.

Head Coach Jay Seawell Comments
"In a tournament that we feel is the most important on our schedule, we did not play well. It's disappointing. Everyone worked hard to get to this point and it's a letdown, to be honest. There is a lot of work that needs to be done to build Alabama golf back to where it once was and unfortunately this was not it. As a coach, I need to be better. As a team, we will be better moving forward. We have to get the culture back to where it belongs, and that responsibility is on all of us.

"We can always learn lessons. There's a scoreboard out there for a reason. I think that's the great thing about sports. It helps build character and helps you overcome adversity. There's a ton of things that we will learn from this experience, both positively and negatively. The future is bright. We will be back in the spotlight where this program belongs. And when those days come, it will feel just that much better."

Regional Bound: Alabama Women’s Golf Selected as No. 2 Seed at NCAA Regional in Franklin

The Crimson Tide will make its 16th straight regional appearance and its 23rd overall

The University of Alabama women's golf team was one of 12 teams selected to compete at the 2022 NCAA Women's Golf Regional in Franklin, Tenn., it was announced Wednesday afternoon on the Golf Channel. The Crimson Tide earned the No. 2 seed in the Franklin regional, which will take place at the Vanderbilt Legends Club – North Course (par 72, 6,475 yards) May 9-11.

With this year's selection, the Crimson Tide will appear in its 16th consecutive regional under the helm of head coach Mic Potter and its 23rd overall. Alabama has played in an NCAA Regional every season under Potter (16) and has won four times during that stretch, all of which have come in the last decade (2011, 2013, 2017, 2018).

The Franklin regional includes the following teams by seed:

1. Wake Forest (Atlantic Coast Conference)
2. Alabama
3. Texas A&M
4. Duke
5. Oregon State
6. Vanderbilt
7. BYU
8. Kent State (Mid-American Conference)
9. UTSA
10. Augusta (Southland Conference)
11. Boston University (Patriot League)
12. Austin Peay (Ohio Valley Conference)

Last November, the NCAA announced the move to a six-regional format for this spring. Each of the six regional sites will now feature 12 teams and six individuals, with the top four teams and top two individuals (not on an advancing team) qualifying for the championships, which will be held for the second straight year at Grayhawk Golf Club – Raptor Course in Scottsdale, Ariz., from May 20-25.

With the move to six regional sites from the previous four-site format, 72 teams will still qualify for regional play, with the number of individuals not on an advancing team increasing from 24 to 36.

Mic Potter Named to 2021-22 WGCA National Coach of the Year Watch List

University of Alabama women's golf head coach Mic Potter has been named one of 20 coaches on the 2022 Jackie Steinmann Women's Golf Coaches Association National Coach of the Year Presented by Golf Pride Watch List, it was announced by the WGCA Monday.

Potter, who is in his 17th season at the helm of the Crimson Tide, led the women's golf team to seven top-four finishes through eight regular-season tournaments this season. That stretch featured a runner-up finish at the Mason Rudolph Championship and a championship finish at The Ally, where the Tide led wire-to-wire for a 10-stroke triumph.

That tournament title helped him to 64 career wins as a head coach, the fourth-most by any active coach in the country.
